roflyear··on U.S. stock futures tumble indicating another plummet on Wall Street
Can you explain how this will work when the fed may have to raise rates to combat inflation?
roflyear··on Trump's Tariffs Wipe Out over $6T on Wall Street in Epic Two-Day Rout
Me too, would be good for sure. For the record, I don't have anything against leveling deficits if that's the goal.
roflyear··on Trump's Tariffs Wipe Out over $6T on Wall Street in Epic Two-Day Rout
What is your alternative solution? Something like weighting the tariffs based on US production? What's the calculation using this method?
roflyear··on Trump's Tariff Formula Makes No Economic Sense. It's Also Based on an Error
It's going to be really interesting!

This is a fine idea, but having the cash during a recession to buy stocks is not always easy.
roflyear··on Trump's Tariff Formula Makes No Economic Sense. It's Also Based on an Error
It is weird that HN isn't talking about tariffs at all - since this is probably the biggest economic mixup since COVID.
roflyear··on US Administration announces 34% tariffs on China, 20% on EU
I 100% agree with you, but the Fed is independent and they only have a few levers to pull.

They don't make policy and they go out of their way to not comment on policy. They say they are apolitical (though of course they are 100% pro-establishment).

If the entire government was working together, yeah, sure, your theory holds. But that isn't how things work.

America is a massive consumer, so it will likely impact other countries, too.

I've been seeing your perspective a lot lately online - that this will somehow cancel income tax. Where is that coming from? I haven't heard a single thing about that from the administration. Where is the basis?

roflyear··on The Spanish electricity market registers negative prices
I think it is remarkable to see this on the front page but nothing about current markets or tariffs. ???
roflyear··on The Darkest Timeline – how I see the 54% tariff impacting the game industry
I don't agree with high CEO pay, but in the general case even with very-well paid CEOs, if you took their salary and divided it out to the other employees entirely it isn't that much. Apple for example, Tim Cook's salary is every employee at the company making about $450 extra a year.

Are you for these recent tariffs?
roflyear··on US markets' worst day since Covid pandemic: Apple and Nvidia lose combined $470B
For the market's aren't the economy crowd: I agree, and even to the extent it does say something about the economy, it is noisy and often inaccurate.

However, there are a few counter arguments. When markets really tank, it does impact businesses directly: companies can sell stock to raise capital, that's really the main reason for going public, and having stock valued less means you can sell it for less, so you either have to sell more stock, or have access to less cash. Also a lot of people get some portion of their salary in stock options, so they'll be getting less money. And companies often care about their stock price, so if it is tanking, they may do things like lay people off, make less risky decisions (investments), etc... which will have a direct impact on the US economy.

Also, markets are forward-looking, so a major selloff here isn't an indication of always what has happened, but often is an indication of investor sentiment regarding the future of the economy (or specifically, the performance of companies that they own shares in).

Anyway, I wish I was able to just sit back and watch this! I wish we could all do that, because it's going to be really interesting, but the unfortunate reality is this is going to cause a lot of pain for a lot of people - and not just in the US. Hope everyone holds up OK.

roflyear··on US Administration announces 34% tariffs on China, 20% on EU
VAT is like a sales-tax but along the supply chain (with credits) - so it's like a complicated sales-tax.

If you want to use that for argument, you should include US sales taxes in the calculation too. Which could be fair, I guess.

roflyear··on US Administration announces 34% tariffs on China, 20% on EU
Yeah, I think best way is to look at the total tariffs collected by the EU on US goods - about $3.3b USD in 2023 - compared to imports ~$370b USD in 2023. So like, 1%.
roflyear··on US Administration announces 34% tariffs on China, 20% on EU
It is how it works in all scenarios, though. Higher rates usually cause people to spend a little less which is a reduction in demand.
roflyear··on US Administration announces 34% tariffs on China, 20% on EU
I think the dollar is around 50% of foreign trade - but anyway I am not arguing against that, I'm saying that it isn't related to trade deficits.
roflyear··on Tell HN: Announcing tomhow as a public moderator
It's not off topic, as it's discussing moderation and the culture of the forum in a post about moderation & replying to someone discussing the culture, and I said nothing about upvotes. It is two strawmen without discussing any of the substance of my comments.
roflyear··on US Administration announces 34% tariffs on China, 20% on EU
It is not correct that an Asian business doing business with a Italian company first exchanges their currency to USD by selling the US goods then using that USD to complete the transaction.

I agree with you that the current situation in the world really benefits the US and the current policies seem to undermine that.

roflyear··on Tell HN: Announcing tomhow as a public moderator
With respect, those are two strawmen.
roflyear··on Tell HN: Announcing tomhow as a public moderator
He's probably wrong about it. Imagine if you could do that in real life.
roflyear··on Tell HN: Announcing tomhow as a public moderator
It's exactly my point that it's impossible to be critical of these guidelines on here, and I think that's a problem.
roflyear··on Tell HN: Announcing tomhow as a public moderator
No, and if you read the tone of my posts and even the tone of dang (and others) here I would argue that my tone is not out of line and arguably more polite.

But I'm the one that is rate limited in this thread and prevented from interacting with people politely.

roflyear··on Tell HN: Announcing tomhow as a public moderator
Or - he's critical of SV and large tech companies?
roflyear··on Tell HN: Announcing tomhow as a public moderator
Sure but I'm not even talking politics! My comment itself was barely a criticism of HN and, yeah, downvotes don't matter - but it's exactly what I am talking about. Any push against that coziness/bubble is not tolerated.

I do think it's OK for some forums - if the community agrees - to say certain topics (like politics) are off limits.

I don't really think it's ok for a community to say discussion about what should be discussed is off limits... or being critical of policies, the bubble, etc...

roflyear··on Tell HN: Announcing tomhow as a public moderator
Yeah! Absolutely. They want the wheel to keep turning - and I do too, if I'm being honest! I get paid from the system like lots of people here.

I just would like for more people to acknowledge that. IDK. Seems more honest and more fitting to what everyone says the HN culture "really is."

roflyear··on Tell HN: Announcing tomhow as a public moderator
Well, let's see how that plays out first, I did just post it a few minutes ago (refresh has me at 0 karma fyi)
roflyear··on Tell HN: Announcing tomhow as a public moderator
I agree it depends on the definition. Quite honestly my vibe, and really that is all it is for any of us discussing this, is pretty much anything more aggressive than my comment above (or even including my comment above, once more people read it).

I definitely DO NOT mean clear hate speech, etc.. that's not my point at all.

roflyear··on Tell HN: Announcing tomhow as a public moderator
I really don't think that HN lets dissenting opinions thrive (well, not anything that is truly controversial but not clearly hateful). That may feel cozy but it's not a reflection of anything pure or good, imo.
roflyear··on The Frontend Treadmill
Yeah, agreed - but I do think using vue, react, whatever on certain pages really has its benefits. Sometimes a UI really is improved by using features that Vue makes really easy to implement.

Of course it's possible without Vue - but you have to do a lot more work in many cases... so, what's the point?
