roflchoppa··on Study: Water spritz before grinding coffee yields less waste, tastier espresso
I guess you could do it too if you had a reusable pod…

But Nespresso feels like it caters to “I want it now”…

roflchoppa··on If I Were Starting a Software Engineering Career Today
Welding, plumbing, electrician… plenty of work for the foreseeable future.
roflchoppa··on U.S. agency declares 21 species now extinct
Why would they be removed from the endangered species list?

Shouldn’t they be placed on onto an uber-protected status list?

I’m sure there is some other modern OEM hub assembly that you could swap in when it comes time to service it. Maybe off a 4Runner/jeep?
roflchoppa··on FCC wants to bolster amateur radio
Dude Jessica has been killing it lately.
roflchoppa··on Finding that lead emissions from aircraft engines contribute to air pollution
The only issue I had on my 240z was the valve seats were some super soft brass like material, those needed to be swapped as they were beat to up and did not seal. The 75+ heads, all have steel seats.

I’ve actually never experienced the, “California gas sucks” issue that car people from the mid-west talk about, have never had an issue with it. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

I find it funny that all the Porsche guys try to find interchangeable parts with VW. Makes sense there is probably overlap between the manufacturing. I do the same thing with my old cars.

That’s sounds like an adventure.
roflchoppa··on California cities ban new gas stations in battle to combat climate change
Hayward! Across the street from Costco!

Cheap gas near Sunnyvale? Probably Safeway in Campbell.

What solar policy? The NEM changes? It seems like you have to get a battery pack to make it worth it.

roflchoppa··on California cities ban new gas stations in battle to combat climate change
Lmao hell yeah dude I fill up in the hood it’s way cheaper than filling up in Palo Alto.

Is there a place where I can lab test my soil? Just over our fence is a main road, we grow a bunch of veggies on our side of the fence.

I wonder what’s being accumulated into our veggies.

roflchoppa··on An effort to ban caste discrimination in California has touched a nerve
This was a typo, I meant South Asian where I wrote South East Asian. Thanks for pointing this out.
roflchoppa··on An effort to ban caste discrimination in California has touched a nerve
> she received pushback even from fellow progressive Democrats. Newsom’s office would not say whether he supports the bill.

> In mid-July, about 250 people gathered at an events center in Fremont, an East Bay suburb in Wahab’s district, for “Caste Con,” a full day of programming against the bill… Fremont Mayor Lily Mei, who lost to Wahab in last year’s race for the local state Senate seat, was given a standing ovation when she was introduced.

It’s interesting to see politics swing side based on how it’s going to affect the votes they get.

In Newsom’s case I would think he wins on larger margins and does not have to worry about things like this.

For Lily, she has no choice, due to the demographic shift in the last 15 years for Fremont, it’s been primarily richer south East Asians. If she wants her reelection she has to support the Hindus.

roflchoppa··on ‘San Francisco changed dramatically’ – Nordstrom is bailing on a flagship store
At least in the old west you could fight for yourself, with restrictions to firearms the fight becomes one sided.

Remember the Fed has stated they have no responsibility to protect you.

Inb4 yeah both sides of the political parties are to blame for restrictions.

roflchoppa··on Xkcd: Ten Thousand
Ya I told showed someone meatspin for the first time at a party a couple months ago.

Everyone else had already been traumatized by it, the reaction was exactly what we were expecting.

roflchoppa··on Executable Examples in Go
I agree 100% with the statement that it tells us more about our engineering team practices, but the question I have is, how to get it better? Python provides rich built ins, which make it easy to compose a rich suite.

It appears that no one else has an issue with it in my group, but I’m the oddball, these guys come from a TS/JS background. They don’t appear to express concern with it.

Are there resources that you can recommend that I can use to get better?

roflchoppa··on Executable Examples in Go
Dude doc tests are the one thing I really really miss when I moved over from working on python backend to a typescript backend…

Actually unittest as a whole, testing in ts/JS feels like a mess, everything is just fanned out everywhere, there has been such a lack of structure in our codebase. I’m sure there are examples of well organized testing suites, but I’ve yet to find them.

roflchoppa··on NYPD urges citizens to buy AirTags to fight surge in car thefts
My boy had this in his integra ,it got broken into the other day, he has a kill switch on the ignition though, so the thief kinda just sat there in the car.

Kick your local thief in the face, ya?

roflchoppa··on Tony Hsieh’s Friends/Family Milked Millions in His Drug-Fueled Final Months
strange, i had a buddy in high school that went to Burning Man about 10 years ago. Before going he was under the impression that he could control his drug consumption. There was a stark difference in his behavior when he came back, he was more rash in actions. After a couple months he was stuck on pills, last I saw he was not looking too hot.

I hope he gets the will to get better.

roflchoppa··on I’m ready to trade in my electric car
I was talking to the repair-man who came in, apparently they could run 200amp on the lines that are currently in place, had they been overhead. Running the wire straight in the ground (no conduit in my case) makes for poor heat dissipation, which limits to the 100/125 main.

I wonder if this changes if they have the 3inch conduit.

roflchoppa··on I’m ready to trade in my electric car
It is the aggregation of all utilities in the house that might become a pain (heat pumps + electric ranges + electric washer drier), but you have a good point, the stuff like car-charging can be done on off-peak times when you only have that one service running.

Maybe I don't need the 200 AMP main, lets see what they install tomorrow.

roflchoppa··on I’m ready to trade in my electric car
So one of the two phases of power that comes into my house went out. I was chatting with the lad that came to fix it from PGE. I wanted to know how much it cost to update my 125amp main panel to 200 amp. He responded , 30-50k after all the trenching work.

At home charging is gonna be a pickle for older homes… esp if you have powerlines that are trenched.

roflchoppa··on Ask HN: Side project of more than $2k monthly revenue? what's your project?
For d-pads on Xbox controllers, you can cut a cross out of an old plastic folder and wedge it between the plastic and the membrane for better feel. It makes the pad crispy. 10/10 all my old controllers have it, too bad no one to play halo3 with. :(
roflchoppa··on Starbucks CEO will work a shift at the company’s cafes once a month
The only way things like this really work is by not giving any heads up to the store or the store management.

Otherwise store management spends a huge amount of time trying to tidy up before “corporate” comes by.

At least that was my experience when things like this happened at the fruit stand.
