rodh257··on I bought a webOS device and went to Taiwan. This is what I learned.
From what I've heard, they are canning the WebOS hardware, but will still be developing the operating system. In fact they are having developer events for WebOS in a few locations this month I believe.
rodh257··on Back to the future with bookstores
I reckon an Amazon store that serves as an interface to their online store might be good. Don't sell books there, but rather you go in, and can browse through books, drink coffee etc just like a Borders store, and if you have a kindle, you can buy books on the spot, if you don't, you can order them shipped to your house. That way they only need a 1-2 copies of each book in the store, just as display stock. They could sell kindles there, and have computers/tablets for purchasing online (even perhaps let you buy books through your kindle app on iOS/android by scanning barcodes/qr codes). Staff could teach people how to use Amazon/kindles etc. Book signings/launches could also be held there.

That's basically how I've used Borders here in Australia before they went bust. I would go in, and enjoy the atmosphere of the physical book store, flick through books, and then take photos of them and go home and buy them online via Kindle or Book Depository for half the price. I don't mind if I don't get the book instantly (though I would anyway if it was out on kindle), I just enjoy browsing. It would be a good sales generator for Amazon with still a fairly low overhead.

rodh257··on Deploying Node.js on Amazon EC2
My iPhone app (http://convoyapp.net) uses NodeJS hosted on Heroku, I looked at various NodeJS hosting options and found Heroku the easiest to get going, not being a Rails guy I've not used them before but I can see what the fuss is about now. It's been running since without a hitch, definitely recommended.
rodh257··on HP to produce one more batch of Touchpads
Having just bought one of these, I'd say that I'm more likely to pay for apps as there is a short selection. For instance, on Android I wouldn't pay for Tweetdeck or similar, but on the touch pad I would, as there isn't many options.
rodh257··on HP to produce one more batch of Touchpads
also to deter competitors from undercutting at hoping to make it up on apps (just as we are discussing about HP here). If they see that even Apple supposedly couldn't make a profit from its app store, they might be deterred.
rodh257··on Think Stats: Probability and Statistics for Programmers
kindle native version should be much easier to read than trying to view html/pdf on the kindle, and you've supported the author
rodh257··on Show HN: Like Button for Hacker News
Is there a way to make it display only to people logged into HN?
rodh257··on Steps to save webOS
I'm not sure if HP is trying to sell Palm/their mobile division or not, but they should. They've just pushed out all of their WebOS devices into the market (at a big loss), so now people are actually using their OS, which makes it much more valuable to a prospective buyer than it was a week ago. There was a huge frenzy over Touch Pads, sure it's only because it was cheap, but at least people are using it now. I don't think HP should continue making them, but it wouldn't be such a bad buy for another company.
rodh257··on Windows 8: Improving our file management basics: copy, move, rename, and delete
if they never ever showed the users the extension users would look at the icon rather than the extension and we wouldn't have this problem
rodh257··on Samsung cites Kubrick's "2001" as Prior Art in Patent Case Against Apple
I think the point to take away from this is that the similarities in design between the iPhone/iPad and their competitors has a lot to do with the fact that really all they are is 1 big screen, and their current designs are the logical design for them. There's really not too much you can do to differentiate other than put your logo on it, change the buttons, change the back, make it bigger, make it square, and Samsung did all except the last one.

I won't doubt that their design job was made easier by the iPhones existence, but I don't think they set out to intentionally trick users into thinking it was an iPhone/iPad.

rodh257··on Continuous Integration Failure? Use USB Missiles
nice, I'd heard a few people mention this idea in the past but never went through on it - good on you.
rodh257··on Microsoft offers webOS developers free Windows Phones and dev tools
IMO It's a chicken and egg situation, developers will go where the users are. I think Nokias brand name will generate a decent bump in sales, enough to get apps flowing through. As long as the major apps are in the store, the average user who might otherwise buy an Android device won't know the difference (at least not at the time of purchasing).

I hear it's different in the USA, but here in Australia many people would LOVE to buy a Nokia, their brand name is associated with 'quality'. If Nokia can hit the right price points, I can see users who have been disappointed with their budget Android devices heading to the 'safe haven' of a Nokia device.

It will take a while to gain momentum, but I'm optimistic on the outcome. I hope they go well because I'd love to develop for WP7.

rodh257··on Microsoft offers webOS developers free Windows Phones and dev tools
Wait until Nokia gets WP7 phones out there, then we'll really see whether it'll be the 3rd player or not.
rodh257··on 100,000+ Sign Up For Stanford’s Open Class on Artificial Intelligence.
I'd be interested to see stats of how many people actually finish it. Seeing as its free its easy to say 'yeah ill do it' and then not find the time.
rodh257··on 100,000+ Sign Up For Stanford’s Open Class on Artificial Intelligence.
I believe you actually submit assignments etc for this. It's not just a recording you passively watch.
rodh257··on Open Office Layout is Bad for Brain
What if you had a cubicle layout, but each of the walls could be slid up or down. So it converts between open plan and concentration cubicle mode? Having the walls up implies you are deep in concentration so people shouldn't disturb you.

Though perhaps would just leave their walls up constantly

rodh257··on Facebook Launches Standalone Mobile Messenger App (And It’s Beluga)
Not available in AU either, but someone has uploaded the APK according to the comments of this post http://www.gizmodo.com.au/2011/08/this-is-the-facebook-messe...
rodh257··on Jonathan's Card revealed as viral marketing campaign
Saying he wasn't affiliated with Starbucks was dishonest (if indeed he was working for them, which I don't think this article really proves), but really does it matter that much? We were all interested in the experiment, can't we applaud some good marketing?
rodh257··on Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 banned from Europe (Apple wins injunction)
That article seems to talk mostly about the phones. When it was first written I recall this image being brought up in response: http://photos.appleinsider.com/Sam.Apple.001.jpg
rodh257··on Snapjoy (YC S11) Will Organize Your Photos For You
I like the idea, definitely need a Windows client though. I think you should also release pricing pretty soon, I don't want to go through the effort of uploading photos if its going to be very expensive all of a sudden. I'd also like to point out that 'a few gigs' is not very many photos these days. I'm not photographer but I had 3-4 gigs of photos after my recent 3 week trip to the USA on just a fairly basic digital camera.

Your price point is going to be a tricky one to pick. Dropbox charges around $10 for 50gb, which if I was only using it for photo backups, would be too much, and I'd not do it.

rodh257··on Kicksend (YC S11) Launches To Make Sharing Big Files A Breeze
When I signed up and first arrived at the get started page that list of steps freaked me out a bit. I thought 'what the hell I have to do all this just to send a file?' I soon realized these were just ways I could get more quota, but perhaps the first page should be the send files page, rather than the how to get more bandwidth one, or redesign that page a bit.
rodh257··on Some People Understand REST and HTTP
yeah but the problem he is having is that you'd need to have different a different method signature for each of these otherwise it won't compile, and he wants to have the same path/parameters for each, which is why you need to rename your method and then add the different attribute.

If your methods already have different parameters or a different name, you can just use the attributes like you state.

rodh257··on Jonathan's Card
Perhaps use your API to determine when the card is less than $20 and add money to it then (rather than hourly rate), that way these big purchases can't be made?
rodh257··on Poll: How do you use XCode?
These guys will be a great indicator of whether there is room for innovation or not. Jetbrains make great stuff.
rodh257··on 10 people who don't matter (2006)
I'd guess that a few of those OEM relationships were probably a result of Ballmers dealmaking skills, so I guess he does matter?
rodh257··on Jonathan's Card
I'm in Australia, I just chose armed forces pacific and added a leading 0 to my zip code. A bit dodgy but it worked
rodh257··on Jonathan's Card
Use them to buy your own coffees and whenever you do, add the value of the coffee to the card?
rodh257··on Some People Understand REST and HTTP
You can't have functions with the same parameters, but ASP.NET MVC gives you a way around this using attributes. See this SO question. http://goo.gl/wJ4jE

Does that solve what you were talking about?

rodh257··on Fukime - hacking Hacker News with a cool startup name
feefighters is a 'fun' name, fukime will be seen as a 'rude' name. You are right that your company name doesn't have to be a boring corporate name, but I think naming it something that has negative connotations is a bit different to naming it something that is fun
rodh257··on How I Made $350 In Two Days With Three Pages and Some Payment Code
Many of Amazons services are meant to be resold in such a way. Heroku, Dropbox, AppHarbor etc. They all provide varying levels of extra value.

Making it easier to access these services is extra value.
