I would also say that scuba diving is probably the closest you can get to experiencing anything close to zero gravity on Earth.
You would think we would get really good at the latter before going after the former, and yet I see no interest from people wanting to live in a (shallowly submersed) submarine. It would also be an order of magnitude less expensive and dangerous.
Adults spell "love" L-O-V-E. Kids spell "love" T-I-M-E.
Explaining Stripe?
Color me surprised.
I think one missing key aspect is: will the US be ever able to come to terms with _an authoritarian_ power being the dominant world power?
There was a lot of optimism around China (much like there is today with Japan) in the 2000's and early 2010's, but their continued lean towards authoritarianism and regional aggression (Taiwan, South China Sea, Philippines, etc) has definitely soured that view.
I have not noticed companies or colleagues 10x'ing (hell, or even 1.5x'ing) their productivity from these tools. What am I missing?
Suffice to say that we all deserve better.
Maybe don't look for relationships on social media and dating apps? There's a whole world out there that you won't be able to access through a screen, but you have to go out and find it. It will not come to you.
And I don't know you, but I can almost universally promise that surgery will not change the outcome. Are you physically fit? Do you smile and laugh when around other people? Do you hold yourself in high esteem? Get the basics right and the rest will follow.
I wouldn't say it's representative of westerners, but more of hyper-active, eager intellectuals (over-represented in the programming world, from my experience). Marc Andreessen is another example of someone who talks very fast.
It has more to do with Centerpoint, who is the electricity provider for the city and responsible for maintaining lines. The power is there, but it can't reach homes due to the number of trees that fell on lines due to Hurricane Beryl's wind.
Aschenbrenner et al are clearly smart, but they have no real world experience to base their (entirely biased) predictions on. It's all very on-brand for the EA and EA-adjacent folks, who spend way too much time on the internet and not enough time out in the real world.
I have reached the point where I believe it is a fundamental flaw in _all_ touch-screen interfaces. I would certainly love to see better alternatives.
Believe it or not, there are users (not buyers) that _love_ ServiceNow for what it can do. Usually because what came before was a mixture of manual process, spreadsheet hell, or some living nightmare like BMC Remedy (at least for ITSM use cases).
"I will say Milton is great and readable as long as Satan is talking. [...] the joke on Milton is that he was the greatest gift to Satan in history. He did everything short of giving him a two-headed guitar. It is just like, Satan is so cool." [0]
I highly recommend giving it a listen (and Econtalk more generally!) if this is something that interests you.

That being said, for my hobby/personal domains, the spam has been as close to zero as you could reasonably expect (maybe a few per week, and they are correctly flagged as spam).
I think you'll find that "maximizing any and all productivity" is both harder than you think and not really something worth striving for.
Plus as neat as these advancements are, they are nowhere nearing the ability to create a "digital double of your brain" of yourself. There is a vast ocean from where we are are today to the possibility of replicating a brain digitally (if it's even physically possible).
Do you have links or anything else you can share on the Lua specification work? I'd be interested to see what a Lua-based chart would look like.
What's the limit on language support? Is it theoretically possible to support any language/runtime? Or does it come down to the protocol (HTTP, gRPC, etc) being used by the communicating processes?
