rockinghigh··on AI weights are not open “source”
When people talk about weights, they talk about a network of weights that takes an input and computes an output. There is really not much difference between a saved model and a program.
rockinghigh··on Automakers are starting to admit that drivers hate touchscreens
Yes, it's terrible, CarPlay was designed to with touch in mind. You spend more time looking at the screen to figure out where your "cursor" is. I found the Tesla touch screen to be much safer to use.
rockinghigh··on Google DeepMind
> ChatGPT generates unhelpful, plausible-looking nonsense.

I use ChatGPT daily to generate code in multiple languages. Not only does it generate complex code, but it can explain it and improve it when prompted to do so. It's mind blowing.

rockinghigh··on Bing AI can't be trusted
I have been using ChatGPT successfully for coding tasks for the last two months. It's often faster than a Google search because it delivers the code, can explain it, and can write a unit test.
rockinghigh··on Builder's Remedy goes into effect in many California cities tomorrow
The new zoning would allow buildings up to 85 feet, or ~10 stories.

> Areas within a short walk of a rapid bus or light rail line — including stretches of Ocean Avenue, Geary Boulevard and Taraval, Judah and Lombard streets — could see developments 55 to 85 feet high. In other areas close to major bus lines, developers would be allowed to build unlimited density within existing height limits. Virtually everywhere else on the west side, up to four units would be allowed on every lot.

rockinghigh··on Companies use drip pricing to overcharge consumers
You can include the tax in the final price and show the breakdown. That's how it works in the rest of the world.
rockinghigh··on Companies use drip pricing to overcharge consumers
Most restaurants and companies know which sales tax rate applies to you. They could include it in their prices.
rockinghigh··on U.S. accuses Google of abusing monopoly in ad technology
Interesting story. By the way, the phrase is "resting on its laurels".
rockinghigh··on EV batteries alone could satisfy short-term grid storage demand as early as 2030
Battery makers are moving away from cobalt. Tesla already switched half of their batteries to a version based on lithium iron phosphate (LFP) which does not contain cobalt.
rockinghigh··on UT-Austin blocks access to TikTok on campus Wi-Fi networks
In the same vein, Michael Flynn went from being a US Army lieutenant general to a foreign agent lobbying for governments like Turkey.
rockinghigh··on Wikipedia editors serving long sentences in Saudi Arabia since 2020
I simply quoted the original commenter who used these words.
rockinghigh··on Wikipedia editors serving long sentences in Saudi Arabia since 2020
It sounds like you're generalizing from a couple of conversations. The Arab Spring of 2010-2012 started because citizens in the Arab world wanted more freedoms. The idea that citizens in Tunisia, Egypt, or Syria are "intellectually incapable of understanding" the idea of freedom of speech is insulting.
rockinghigh··on Human gene linked to bigger brains was born from seemingly useless DNA
Non-coding sequences have been understood as having some functions at least since the early 1990s. Because genome expression is dynamic, tracking the exact mechanisms of action of these sequences is challenging.
rockinghigh··on Tell HN: Uber has blocked my account for years, won't tell me why
Not really. Some drivers will insist on driving you to an ATM.
rockinghigh··on Tell HN: Uber has blocked my account for years, won't tell me why
I've had that experience of "broken credit card machine" in multiple countries including US, France, and Italy. That's why I use Uber when I can. I don't want to feel kidnapped by a taxi driver who insists in driving to an ATM.
rockinghigh··on Apple kills plans to scan for CSAM in iCloud
Apple publishes the volume of government information requests across the world: https://www.apple.com/legal/transparency/choose-country-regi...

They try to reduce their exposure to these government information requests; by keeping personal data on the devices and storing anonymized records on their servers when possible.

rockinghigh··on France prepares for possibility of electricity blackouts during winter months
The uranium used in France comes in part from Niger. The mines in Niger are operated by Orano, a mining company whose main shareholder is also France. There have been controversies about France using foreign aid to pressure the Niger government for more favorable mining contracts.
rockinghigh··on Twenty five thousand dollars of funny money
As I understand, the frontend and backend code run in a development environment but the funds available were stored in a production database.
rockinghigh··on The Twitter Files
The first link shared multiple pictures including Hunter Biden nude and engaging in sexual activity. Another picture shows a bag white powder. Twitter took it down because it violated their hacked material policy. Sharing nude pictures without the person's consent is also against Twitter policy.
rockinghigh··on Key staff driving Apple search engine leave to rejoin Google
You're extrapolating a lot from just a title. Apple has had various search engines and crawlers for almost a decade now. Their first major investment was the Topsy's acquisition, in 2013. They've continued to invest through acquisitions and organic growth to reduce their reliance on Google Search. There is no indication that Apple will stop.
rockinghigh··on Layoff-sucks: Helping laid-off people find their next job
It's not great in your 20s either when you just started and may have limited savings.
rockinghigh··on Twitter layoffs gutted election information teams days before midterms
A few ways that come to mind: 1) detect accounts funded by overseas groups to interfere and spread hate, 2) display fact check warnings when sharing links to debunked conspiracy theories, 3) put checks in place to reduce harassment of elected officials and candidates.
rockinghigh··on Twitter to start layoffs -internal email
> Last year, Twitter’s interest expense was about $50 million. With the new debt taken on in the deal, that will now balloon to about $1 billion a year.

rockinghigh··on Twitter to start layoffs -internal email
We went through a similar period in 2008. It's best to live below your means and increase your savings. It may take longer to find a new role when thousands of candidates are also looking and large companies have frozen hiring.
rockinghigh··on Electric scooter ban increased congestion by 10% in Atlanta
And 2.1 million emergency visits per year for injuries related to motor vehicle crashes.
rockinghigh··on Electric scooter ban increased congestion by 10% in Atlanta
It's 43k deaths per year in the US.
rockinghigh··on Electric scooter ban increased congestion by 10% in Atlanta
Zurich and to some extent Paris. The key is to have bike lanes and designated areas where the scooters can be dropped.
rockinghigh··on Tesla faces U.S. criminal probe over self-driving claims
In my experience (Model 3 and Y), Basic Autopilot works very well on highways and is easier to use than the competition. However, enhanced autopilot and full self-driving do not provide benefits and are still unsafe outside freeways. They are used by Tesla to increase margins and hype their brand as innovative.
rockinghigh··on YouTube Premium Price Increase
The annual plan doesn't seem to be available for families.
rockinghigh··on On the cheap, like a local, and without a lot of luggage
You're right. In order, the cheapest options are:

1) an account in the local currency with a debit card;

2) credit cards without foreign transaction fees and cash- back

3) ATM withdrawal with a no-fee debit card

Changing USD in cash to get local currency is almost always the worst option. They charge 5%-10% on the exchange rate plus whatever fees.
