robteix··on Ask HN: What “old” programming languages will you still be using in 2017?
OMG the memories! I did work in MUMPS while I was in college in the early 90s. I had completely forgotten about this. Thanks for that :)

> Invite a trusted friend to virtually walk you home if you feel unsafe

As a parent, I find this tremendously useful. This is specially important for people in certain countries where walking/driving home at night is realistically dangerous.

robteix··on Are Front-End Developers Real Developers?
I'm mainly a back-end developer, although I've done frontend as well.

I've never encountered this stigma of front-end developers not being developers or at least being lesser than back-end devs.

Is this really a thing?

robteix··on I went to Nigeria to meet a man who scammed me
Wouldn't that constitute theft, though? The intented recipient is stealing, for sure, but if she wants to send the money and you pretend to deliver but keep it...

The OP was referring to the one that says "web"

Isn't reputation a thing of beauty?

PSA: There doesn't seem to be an obvious way to delete one's account.

If you're thinking of just giving it a go, keep that in mind.

robteix··on Building a BitTorrent client from scratch in C#
Because the value is actually "5:value", which means it's 5 bytes long. The final 'e' indicates the end of the dictionary, not the value.
robteix··on Steps to Turn Off the Nagging Self-Doubt in Your Head
This article reminds me a lot of my personal experience with cognitive behavioural therapy.

I've long suffered from social anxiety and after years of anti-anxiety drugs and some therapy, I finally tried CBT and it was essentially:

- write down the thoughts

- identify what triggered them

- find alternative (positive) conclusions

At first I thought it was ridiculous but it actually works after a while.

robteix··on Hacker Monthly will publish its final issue 12 months from now
Me neither. Now I'm sad because it seems like a great magazine :/

> AWS is always going to include a premium because they take care of the DevOps portion of your infrastructure.

But wouldn't that apply also to SoftLayer?

robteix··on Je Suis Charlie
I wonder if the debate in the media will focus on religious fanaticism or if they'll start victim blaming by arguing that Charlie Hebdo was asking for it, being provocative.
robteix··on Summary of Go Generics Discussions
The Go team has repeatedly stated they have nothing against generics per se and they see a value for it. They simply have not found an implementation that works with language values (simplicity, fast compilation, etc.)

If anyone can come up with an implementation that works, I see no reason why the team would say no to its inclusion.

robteix··on Don't React (Presentation - Use arrows to navigate)
> People are really missing the point here. Follow staltz on twitter, he really knows his stuff.

Whether he's brilliant on twitter or not is irrelevant. People are judging the presentation. Even if he's the most brilliant mind in the 21st century, that doesn't shield his work from scrutiny.

robteix··on Announcing Stack Overflow in Portuguese
I can't imagine ever searching for a solution to a problem in Portuguese. I never google in Portuguese, ever. Content quality is just abismal.
robteix··on Go 1 Released
Awesome news! A great job by all involved.
robteix··on Starting up with a friend
Great advice. A few years back a couple of friends and I decided to start a new company. Both were (and continue to be) really good friends to me, but just before we formally created the company, I decided to back down. The reason -- and I told both of them that -- was that I was afraid that the company would eventually destroy the friendship.

We all decided to go our own ways and thus the friendship survived. I often wonder if we could have pulled it out, but I really don't regret the decision.
