robjan··on MoonHome: Remote Development Environment
It would have to be E2E encrypted which would break the functionality of a remote development environment
robjan··on Lets talk about how NFTs are a giant scam
The owner of the NFT was allocated a license to display the NFT and sell it but not ownership rights of the underlying media. Based on the wording, if you sell it the rights are terminated and not transferred to the new owner.

robjan··on Lets talk about how NFTs are a giant scam
Attack the argument, not the person

With NFTs, another warehouse can also note that the art belongs to you and you have equal legal rights to enjoy and sell the art as the original owner.
robjan··on People Don't Understand NFTs
What happens when the owner of the NFT representing their land loses their private key or they die without passing the key to someone else? There are only two options: either the land exists ownerless forever or the blockchain is hardforked which would undermine the whole system.

Blockchain in general doesn't really work well when it has to interact with the physical world.

robjan··on Large percentage fear having children because of climate crisis
Caring about the environment is more likely related to nurture than nature.
robjan··on Twitch source code and customer data has reportedly been leaked
I don't think that's a common workflow within companies. In every org I have worked at, forking is explicitly disabled
robjan··on Facebook going down meant more than just a social network being unavailable
How about people who don't live in their home country?
robjan··on Facebook going down meant more than just a social network being unavailable
When you update your phone number, as long as you register the transfer in WhatsApp (as opposed to creating a new account) it's pretty seamless. There's no need for everyone to update your contact.
robjan··on Facebook-owned sites were down
There was no permanent damage to Facebook as a result of the outage so it's understandable that the stock price wasn't really affected by it
robjan··on Facebook-owned sites were down
My ISP's DNS server went down a few minutes after the Facebook outage, presumably because all the residential customers' devices keep querying.

Netflix is up
robjan··on Cryptocurrency and the unbanked
Most people's introduction into finance usually isn't a casino
robjan··on DeFi bug accidentally gives $90M to users
There's a mechanism for putting that right
robjan··on NFT projects are just MLMs for tech elites
The physical representation of the "print" and "original" can be identical and indistinguishable in the case of an NFT
robjan··on YouTube removes “I Can't Believe You've Done This” video from 2007
This is a problem that decentralised protocols such as IPFS theoretically solve. You reserve x GB on your storage to cache the content you consume and can optionally "pin" content to keep it on your disk indefinitely.

The problem is there are privacy concerns with this type of system as it's possible for anyone to find out who has consumed particular content.

robjan··on Domain-Driven Design
He has an "About" page and links to his LinkedIn profile on his website.
robjan··on DuckDuckGo Is Now Carbon Negative
Usually, rather than just planting trees, carbon offsets do things like replacing inefficient equipment or processes in developing countries. There's a lot of low hanging fruit that can be decarbonised / reduced significantly with a little bit of investment.

Over time these low hanging fruit will all be picked resulting in an increase in the cost of carbon offsets.

robjan··on Serving Netflix Video at 400Gb/s on FreeBSD [pdf]
Netflix use AWS for their commodity workloads and rolled their own CDN because delivering high quality streams without using too much bandwidth on the public internet is one of their differentiators.
robjan··on Xiaomi Unveils Xiaomi Smart Glasses
Xiaomi products are pretty popular in India where English is widely spoken. They also have stores and concessions starting to open in the UK and other European markets.
robjan··on First US Census Bureau Report on Growing Childless Older Adult Population
I think if you are planning to neglect your child, you should think again about your choice of having children.
robjan··on I Just Lost 1,400 BTC (2020)
It's harder to permanently steal gold from an institution than crypto.
robjan··on UK loses 83% of department stores since BHS collapsed
The department stores were on life support long before Brexit. It's part of the general decline of the UK High Street but also failure of the stores to stay relevant.
robjan··on Ask HN: Where can I live off 1k USD per month?
The written language is Traditional Chinese.
robjan··on Pinterest commits to spending $3B with AWS through to 2029
When you become a significant user of cloud they start to offer pretty significant negotiated discounts on top of committed usage discounts.
robjan··on The Middle East is running out of water, and parts are becoming uninhabitable
The brine, which is a byproduct of desalination, is pretty devastating to local sealife.
robjan··on United Airlines bans duct tape restraints
Duck tape is harder to remove in case of an emergency. With the cuffs the latch is in a position well known to the crew so they can just be taken off.
robjan··on United Airlines bans duct tape restraints
Handcuffs (not fluffy, as mentioned by a sibling). No key, just a latch. They are easy to release in case of emergency.

Source: was cabin crew and use of cuffs was part of the training.

robjan··on Many of the clothes we donate to charity end up dumped in landfill
The article pretty much demonstrates that donation doesn't solve the wate problem.
robjan··on Infrastructure bill program will test the feasibility of road usage fees
There'll be a lot more people driving on the equivalent of racing slicks to avoid replacing their tyres and, I imagine, a black market for retreading
