But, possibly we will discover some need for features we could add to a paid version of this in future.
They have been talking about changing that, but I understand it is complex and never really becomes a priority
Not saying the OP has no responsibility here. Just that I don't think it is that black and white. There is plenty AWS could do to avoid this sort of thing happening. Totally fair to call them out for that. Especially when the cost of phoning support is $2-3k specifically because of the new costs on your account!
I would suggest not getting too hung up on this, it is showing you the worst outcome and assuming you have made a good effort to be compliant I should think things would be fine even then. No doubt you have Ts and Cs, that document is full of clauses put in place because of things like this, and any of them could probably result in a worse letter from a customer wanting to sue you over something. But I image also that hasn't happened to you yet either?
Also, try defining (maybe in collaboration with the team) the tests you want people to write rather than leaving it up to them or (hopefully not) expecting 100% coverage. I wrote this on my thoughts a while back https://getcorrello.com/blog/2015/11/20/how-much-automated-t... We had some success with increasing testing using that and code review so others could check tests were being written. Still not total buy in to be honest but a big move in the right direction :)
One surprising thing was that after years of thinking I was encouraging my team to write tests, the main feedback on why they didn't was that the didn't have time. Making it an explicit part of the process and importantly defining what tests didn't need to be maintained forever really helped.
I would say, if you hold one of these "taboo" opinions there is a reasonable amount of responsibility on you for how you open a discussion on them. If you do want to discuss them you need to try and raise them in a way which shows you are genuinely interested in discussion, including possibly changing your own opinion and trying to get a better understanding of others opinions without necessarily judging them. Rather than coming from a fixed position and trying to convert people, which in my experience rarely works.
If you hold one of more of these taboo opinions and think I am being rude, suggesting you don't discuss properly it that those you discuss with are all perfect reasonable beings that is not the case. But in my experience it is not common for people to open a discussion honestly looking to assess their own opinions as well as those they are discussing with. If you aren't open to change your mind, why should anyone be open to change theirs? If you are already doing that, then good for you! Hopefully some minds will get changed and we can all move forward with a more honest understanding of the world.
I actually own my own business so focusing on things during work time isn't too hard (Always too much to do regardless of the hours I work). The need for some social contact is an interesting one as I we are also considering moving out of the town we live in with my family. I think we will use that as an excuse to join some local groups and get involved with things and hence meet people that way.
Thanks!
I had thought of a similar approach from the other side. Ie arranging my work as one off missions (ie raise activation rates 2x) and then deciding after each one whether I continue working or take a break. There are a few things getting in the way of that at the moment and I think I prefer the regular if smaller push of working part time. However, for a business owner I guess that could be a nice way to work if it fitted their lifestyle.
Maybe any move to part time isn't a plan to be part time forever, just that it is the right thing right now. There's a lot of people who think the only way to achieve anything (ie starting/growing a business) is to put yourself 100% into it, which then costs time spent with family, hobbies and yourself etc. Maybe going a bit slower for a while on some parts of your life is the right thing to do, then to switch the balance later if/when it is appropriate.
Either that or decide you're OK with poor health and a shorter than necessary life! :)
Luckily when I started out the plugins-for-trello space was very uncluttered. It was mostly abandonware and github projects created by developers over a weekend. So since Corrello is exclusively aimed at Trello teams and was one of the only tools being built fulltime just for that I have been able to piggy back on their success without a lot of serious competition. There is some competition and I expect more will come as others realise the Trello platform is a viable place to build a business but I think that can only be a good thing really.
I've read these posts for a while on HN, it's nice to be able to reply to one finally :)
On a less important note, re the argument being at a level of "how could you vote for someone who said that". That may not be people refusing to engage with what you see as the important points, but them focusing on what they see as the most important points. That doesn't make it right but if it is the case you may do well to understand their point of view holds that someone with his behaviour and character can't be trusted with power, they may see everything else as somewhat irrelevant. If that is the case at least understanding it may help you frame the discussion with such people, and hopefully not dismiss their arguments as petty since they think they are the most important points.
Anyway, aside complete. Let's hear the rationale for being a Trump supporter, I would be genuinely interested to hear it even if I may ultimately disagree.
In the UK at least we aren't meant to release the results until the returning officer reads them out so waiting for any of the above while showing a live feed of a result would mean we don't have the result to show on screen immediately. For this reason you would likely also have people in the studio watching the live feeds from counts and entering the numbers which would then be double checked against the official feed later. This can be tricky when the result is drowned out by cheering from a crowd of supporters! ie "Labout party, John Candidate 22 thousand... <WOOOOOO - YEAAAH> ...hundred and 1 votes"
The focus for news orgs is getting these results out accurately before their competitors, no one wants to be slow to announce the results.
I'm not 100% clear on what you are saying but it sounds like you think agile teams ignore these non-functional requirements in favour of perceived progress on features. I think that may well be true in practice but it is also true of non-agile teams. It is in fact just true of immature development teams the world over. Being agile or not has nothing to do with it. Scrum and other processes do at least try to have something in place to cater for these requirements, which often sadly get overlooked when pressure is applied to make flat out progress on features.
