robbyking··on Bad Manors: The McMansion as Harbinger
I think what gets lost in this debate is the fact that in most major US cities you can have two cars, a yard with a lawn you can mow and a guest room without sacrificing walkability and public transportation.

I live in a working class neighborhood in a major coastal city and still have everything I listed above: I bike or ride the bus to work but a lot of my coworkers drive; I have front and backyards (with lawns!) but I can walk a few blocks to a commercial district with dozens of shops and restaurants. Not every city looks like Manhattan. Not even all of NYC looks like Manhattan.

robbyking··on The world’s oldest ultramarathon runner is racing against death
> I don't know anyone who managed to have a healthy relationship with it for more than a decade.

Absolutely! When the 2020 season was cancelled due to Covid, one of my teammates asked "what are we supposed to do now, ride bikes for fun?" They were joking, but I think the sentiment rings true for a lot of people.

robbyking··on The world’s oldest ultramarathon runner is racing against death
I'm in the same boat -- I'm 45 and a mediocre mountain bike racer, but over the last few years my motivation to train has gone down considerably. The problem is bike racing has been my "thing" for so long that's it's weird to think of cycling season coming and going without me.
robbyking··on Why “free” street parking could be costing you hundreds more in rent
When you start thinking of street parking as publicly funded storage space for private property, it really makes you question why such a large percentage of urban space (and money) is dedicated to it.
robbyking··on Even Apple employees hate Siri and are skeptical of its future, new report says
That's the trick with Siri. I use it on my Apple Watch when I'm riding my bike with an AirPod in: "Siri, play this podcast," or "Siri, call so-and-so."

I think the secret is low expectations.

robbyking··on Cyclists now outnumber motorists in City of London
> The newer style of cargo bikes can for many families replace a car.

Absolutely! My wife and I have a 6yo, and we take him everywhere on the back of our Kona Minute.

He's big for his age (65lbs) so we're looking to move to a ebike sometime this year, but up to now it's been great! Literally the only time we need to use a car is when we go out of town.

robbyking··on Apple delays its mixed reality headset by two months, to debut at WWDC this June
I really like the idea of using XR for sports training, like in snowboarding goggles or cycling classes. Almost all road cyclists use some sort of stem mounted computer for GPS and/or fitness tracking, and it would be amazing if someone made a descrete HUD that allowed you access that info without having to look down while you're riding.
robbyking··on Most Crypto Developers Aren't Working on Bitcoin or Ethereum
Right? You throw where the receiver is going, not where they are.
robbyking··on We reduced our iOS app launch time by 60%
I don't know if it's still the case, but some third party libraries are required to run on launch.

I worked on a an app where the Facebook login library took 600ms to load, and was required to run on launch.

robbyking··on NYC Slice
That's what I used to tell people about San Francisco when I lived there twenty years ago -- the high end restaurants are great, but what's more impressive is that the average neighborhood eatery is more often than not really amazing, too.
robbyking··on Show HN: Create a paid link to anything
> I don't recall ever getting out my credit card and paying $5 for something from a random link on Twitter.

The other issues with this site aside, affiliate programs don't require the user purchase the item that brought them to the site. There's a book I found myself recommending quite often, so I created an affiliate account at a retailer and started using that link when I recommended it online. I make about $100 each quarter off of site referrals, but almost no one buys the book -- instead they follow the link, click on something in a related items carousel and buy one of those items. Sometimes the time between click and purchase is pretty long (weeks or even months), but as long as the affiliate cook persists I get a percentage of the purchase price.

robbyking··on Ask HN: Anyone tired of everything being a subscription now?
I had that happen with a sleep tracker for Apple Watch. It was a few dollars for the app, but to actually view the data it tracked while you were asleep, you had to upgrade to the premium subscription. Fortunately it was easy enough to get a refund[1].

robbyking··on What not to say to someone who has just been laid off
When my son was born, my friends without kids would bring food by and want to hang out, while my friends with kids would just text us after they left food on our doorstep.
robbyking··on What not to say to someone who has just been laid off
One thing I learned when my son was born is eating well is really tough to do when your mind is somewhere else.

Mealtrains -- friend sourced meal prep -- are popular for people with newborns, but I've taken to dropping off meals (or sending GrubHub gift cards for friends who live out of town) to friends when I know they're going through a tough time.

robbyking··on AI found a bug in my code
I see this a lot when departments require code be commented -- instead of why you get what, which should be obvious just by reading the code.
robbyking··on Typing “old” (space) into iOS Safari crashes the app
My guess is a lot of the crashes come from old.reddit.com
robbyking··on Show HN: I made an offline-ready hiking trail companion app
Thank you so much for this! I remember loving this app years ago, but lost track of it during one of my upgrades.
robbyking··on How to communicate effectively as a developer
> One simple trick, I think, is to avoid extensive use of pronouns.

I was taught this is a project management for engineers course I took when I was younger: never use language that is open to interpretation. In addition to your examples, I also see this happening in meetings when engineers say a non-sprint task will be "quick." How quick? A few minutes? A few weeks? A few quarters? As soon as we started clarifying these ambiguities we eliminated a lot of misunderstandings.

robbyking··on Elon Musk owns Twitter: The story so far
That was my first thought, too. On the other hand, if you're a local engineer who feels stuck in their current position it could be a good opportunity to fill the void.
robbyking··on 87% of American teens own an iPhone; 88% expect an iPhone to be their next phone
It's at least arguable that kids that grow up with the means to afford new iPhones will be more likely to have the means to go to a good college.
robbyking··on 87% of American teens own an iPhone; 88% expect an iPhone to be their next phone
My guess is a lot of their parents are iPhone users who pass their phones on to their children. My wife only recently upgraded her iPhone 8, and only did so because of how noticable better the photos were on my new iPhone. In my experience Android phones don't last that long.
robbyking··on 87% of American teens own an iPhone; 88% expect an iPhone to be their next phone
In theory I agree, but we have something like 10k employees and millions of users per platform per day, so our code is pretty well vetted.
robbyking··on 87% of American teens own an iPhone; 88% expect an iPhone to be their next phone
Since we're trading anecdotes, none of the iOS engineers on my team have Android phones, but about half of the Android engineers have iPhones.
robbyking··on 87% of American teens own an iPhone; 88% expect an iPhone to be their next phone
And kids still get shit for not wearing "cool" shoes!

When I was younger I got teased for not having a Starter brand fitted hat, and I wasn't even into team sports.

robbyking··on 87% of American teens own an iPhone; 88% expect an iPhone to be their next phone
Yeah, my son is entirely too young for a phone right now, but my wife and my plan is to just upgrade every few years and give him one of our old phones. It wasn't too long ago that we did the same thing for our parents.
robbyking··on Apple’s ad business set to boom on the back of its own anti-tracking crackdown
I understand your point, but there's a difference between ads targeting specific audiences and ads targeting specific individuals.
robbyking··on I spent two years trying to do what Backstage does for free
Is there a term for this phenomenon, my dear Watson?
robbyking··on iOS 16 Available September 12th
I'm always paranoid that I'm going to miss a call from one of the million numbers that come from my kiddo's school.
robbyking··on America Has an E-Bike Problem That Can’t Be Solved with More E-Bikes
One of my biggest gripes about cycling in SF was shoaling[1] -- when slower riders pull in front of faster ones at a red light, only to be immediately passed when the light turns green.

One thing that Portland has (in some places) is two lane bike lanes [2], which makes it really easy ride at a comfortable pace and pass other riders when needed.
