rnicholson··on Fork: Fast and Friendly Git Client for Mac
git commit -v gives you the diffs provided you don't also use -m. Personally, I find -m to be a dangerous flag for commit for exactly the reasons you described not mention its hard to really do detailed multi-line commit messages with -m.
rnicholson··on Dotcloud Is Shutting Down on February 29
They did. It was in the article.

> ... dotCloud the startup pivoted to focus on Docker and changed its name to Docker as well. Then, in August 2014, Docker sold dotCloud to cloudControl.

rnicholson··on Recovering deleted files using only grep
What is the reason for saving then moving for existing files? This an optimization specific to certain file systems?
rnicholson··on So, you want to crypto
>Both Applied Cryptography and the Handbook of Applied Cryptography are great resources, although they're a little dated now. ... Step one is to read Cryptography Engineering. This is not optional. Read it. It is a fantastic book that details how to use cryptographic primitives.

It seems kinda superfluous to mention Applied Crypto when the real reco is to read Cryptography Engineering. I'd almost wonder if it would be better to direct people away from Applied Crypto...

Personally, I found Applied Cryptography to be so-so at best. Practical Cryptography was a breath of fresh air in comparison.

rnicholson··on A Look at the Bitcoin Economy
>I see he's excluding the 100 most popular addresses. Is there any justification for that?

Probably because most of the top 100 are things like SatoshiDICE.

rnicholson··on Bitcoin Network Doubles to 2 PH/s in Four Weeks; the First 1 PH/s Took 4.7 Years
If were talking about graphics card rigs, well I guess could attempt to re-sell them to gamers and the like to attempt to get some money back out of them (although, in the end probably still a loss unless you covered the purchase+power/cooling+maint costs in mining with them)

ASIC BTC mining hardware, I don't think can be re-purposed.

rnicholson··on Google Abandons Open Standards for Instant Messaging
got a source? Or just wildly speculating?
rnicholson··on Geocities Bootstrap Theme
Oh yeah. Low points (for me) were when it seemed like every site had <bgsound>.
rnicholson··on Rails is omakase
eh, its kind of always been a meritocracy...

rnicholson··on Secure Shell chrome (killer) app
I don't think you need to issue your Google login credentials to _use_ the extension, only to install it. Further, if you're on a computer where you don't feel comfortable using your Google login, why would you feel comfortable using ssh (via this extension) on the same said computer?
rnicholson··on Show HN: My weekend project Parallax.js
Kind of harsh to call it "a failure" because it doesn't load in IE8. It loads fine in IE9 btw.
rnicholson··on On cryptography and dogmas
> First: scrypt (http://www.tarsnap.com/scrypt/) is far better than bcrypt.

Is there any independent analysis on scrypt? Only paper on scrypt I've seen comes from Colin. That's not meant as an attack; I'm interested in learning more, but can't find anything else.

rnicholson··on Arch Linux – "It is what you make it"
I've been running Arch x86_64 for well over a year now, and I haven't ran into a package yet that that I needed that didn't have a x86_64 version.
rnicholson··on VMware Fusion 4 Released
Mac OS X Lion and Mac OS X Lion Server are now supported as guest operating systems. Mac OS X Lion can be installed by dragging the Lion installer icon to the virtual machine wizard.

Nice! So, how exactly does one do this? The Lion Installer seems to be gone from my system since I upgraded to Lion...

rnicholson··on The Art of Assembly Language Programming
Darn. All the exercises and labs appear to be missing. Anyone know where else to find them? Or am I not missing anything by not having them?
rnicholson··on Introducing BrowserID: A better way to sign in
Interesting that in the demo video he used in-browser Gmail vs. using Thunderbird.

I realize its nitpicky, but figured for a demo like this Mozilla would use the opportunity to showcase all their offerings in the workflow.

rnicholson··on The most useful GCC options and extensions
No love for --coverage?
rnicholson··on DuckDuckGo: Escape your search engine filter bubble
Interesting. I've been using ddg for several months now, and haven't quite experienced my search results as being "less relevant" or "harder to find things" in comparison to Google or Yahoo!.

Ironically, I do use the ddg bang (!) operators quite often. ...like !gm or !gi if I know I want a map or image (for example)

rnicholson··on Python for Android | Linux Journal
If its a less verbose language that you are looking for, you might want to checkout mirah (and pindah) -- https://github.com/mirah

I believe its still under heavy development, but really nice in that mirah can output dalvik bytecode.

rnicholson··on Google acquires Zynamics
Is it a sign when all the prices and ordering info for their products has vanished off the site? or is this SOP when a company is acquired?
rnicholson··on Decrypt message, win 1 free year of killer web hosting

rnicholson··on Ask HN: What is the Holy Grail for Software Engineering?
"Good, Cheap and Fast" and not being forced to pick two.
rnicholson··on Ask HN: Programming jobs in India?
A few recruiters and HR departments, that I've seen, do value technical certifications. Depends on the job.

Personally, I'm not a firm believer in valuing technical certifications as worthless. Overly valued by some, sure, but not worthless.

rnicholson··on ARel 2.0: Active Record Performance in Rails 3.0.2

Is this in 1.9.x? or 1.8.x? or both?

rnicholson··on How does mkdir() really work?
