rmellow··on Linux Zoom client proactively reading everything written to X11 clipboard
99% of the time I use the browser.

However, the video quality in the browser is worse, so depending on the use case I might have to use the app (via sandbox).

It's been years since I've had to though.

rmellow··on Linux Zoom client proactively reading everything written to X11 clipboard
Not the first time Zoom abuses privilege.

A few years back, there was something about gaining root on MacOS via Zoom due to shady execution on their end.

They've lost my trust since then, and I'll only run it sandboxed: https://gist.github.com/cielavenir/02f322e322a2a3555dbf2b38f...

I always ask (1) why does an app require installation and (2) why would it require root?

There are valid answers for both, but realistically, all a videoconferencing app should need (apart from audio and video and maybe screen sharing) is to store a config file.

There's no legitimate use for it accessing privileged or private paths.

Ironically, your entire post can be read as such, almost perfectly!

Labeling each sentence (J)ab and (T)hrust, and using colon ":" to indicate arguments, one gets:

```
J: J. J. T.
J: "J. J. T".
T: T.
T: J. J. T.
```

Question - How does this capture the entire screen, except its own window?

I've tried making similar functionality in Python to add visual effects to the screen, but the only way I found is to use one of the packages which leverage the Screenshot functionality.

But this causes recursion since my app's window will be in the screenshot (unless I put my app on a different monitor or a different area of the monitor). How do they avoid that?

I've always been good at conjuring images in my mind, but I also skip the drawn out visual descriptions.

Zapped by shower heads? Don't know anyone.

Yes, this is anecdata.

rmellow··on If AI is helping people code better, why aren't products getting better?
Digital distribution and cloud apps lowered the cost to correct mistakes and therefore lowered the barrier to release.

No longer are developers bound by physical media, or have to force clients to troubleshoot, manually download updates on their website and install them.

... and as others said, LLMs impact is greater on junior developers, and at that, more on speed than quality. For experienced developers, the impact is greater on speed.

I have no data, only sense to make.

While I get the difference between creators vs users, in the end we're all users in someone else's perspective.

Maybe you've built your own tools, but that's just applying someone else's library.

Maybe you've built your own library, but that's just using someone else's OS and IDE.

Maybe you've built your own OS, but you're still just applying a language that an actually smart person developed.

Maybe you've developed your own language, but that's just an abstraction of actual hardware activity, which the actual geniuses who tamed silicon built.

Maybe you've built your own hardware, but you're really just applying physical and chemical discoveries that actual smart humans made.

Maybe you've even discovered physical and chemical discoveries yourself! But that's nothing, you're just observing the laws of nature.

Maybe you've created laws of nature yourself, but you're nothing next to your mother, who gave birth to a god.

rmellow··on Measure Schools on Student Growth
Unfortunately gaming the system is still a temptation.

By rewarding growth, schools are incentivized to prevent earlier grades from doing too well.

One student with potential pushing the overall performance higher than that school might like for that year might be purposefully stunted in order to allow room for growth in later years, robbing them of getting as far in life as they would have.

rmellow··on Oh Frick Go Back: GUI Tool to Removes Ads from Various Places Around Windows 11
Linux keeps improving. But I can tell you the following from a Lenovo Certified Ubuntu laptop last year:

- Hibernate/suspend issues, Graphics/Wifi dies on wakeup.

- Still needed to fiddle with SecureBoot to install.

- Setting up TPM was an involved process using the CLI. Couldn't get the fingerprint scanner to run either.

- Some from older generations require familiarity. I used to get yelled at because I "moved the Internet icon".

- So much of the world requires Windows/Mac: banking apps, taxes and government apps, anti-cheat and student software. Yes they're all terrible software, but you're crippling yourself socially by avoiding them. It's sad but real. Maybe not in your country, good for you, but that's not the case everywhere.
