rmbryan··on Show HN: CodeQuality for Jira Quantify Code Quality
Congratulations and thanks for sharing.
rmbryan··on 5g Detrimental to Insects
I wonder what they mean by "insect phantoms"? Probably not what I imagine.
rmbryan··on The Fight to Save Coral (2017)
How is this an accident?

The technique called “microfragmenting” works by essentially cutting living corals into 1-5 smaller polyps using a specialized saw.

rmbryan··on Google Walkout Organizers Say They're Facing Retaliation
Okay, again, I'm uninformed: How is anyone supposed to establish WHY a company does something? The rule says, "For example, depending on the facts, it could be retaliation if an employer acts because of the employee's EEO activity to..."

The word because bewilders me here. Who knows why anyone does anything? I don't know why I do 90% of what I do. If someone accused me of having tuna for lunch because of someone's EEO activity, how could I possibly prove they were wrong?

rmbryan··on Google Walkout Organizers Say They're Facing Retaliation
Thank you! TIL, etc...
rmbryan··on Google Walkout Organizers Say They're Facing Retaliation
I apologize if this is a naive question, but didn't they expect to get fired? I certainly would, if I started publicly protesting my employer.
rmbryan··on Stephen Wolfram Version 12 Launches Today (and It’s a Big Jump for Wolfram
Is there a proper summary somewhere? The "summary" from wolfram is 61k words. I get that there's a lot in the update. Isn't summarizing a mass of complex information well suited to some kind of mechanical processing?
rmbryan··on Should I Resign from My Full Professor Job to Work Fulltime on Cocalc?
You need a proofreader. Also, to save everyone time, the guy concludes that he probably shouldn't resign, but he's going to anyway, because it's what he wants to do. Also, he comes up with reasons.
rmbryan··on Facebook to ban white nationalist content
Yes, well said. That's a fair point. If I think about my response to an announcement that said, "This kind of content is being banned because it reduces our shareholder value." I can't argue with that. I think, "Sure, you're running a businesses. It's a business decision. Good on ya." It's the moralist explanation that confuses me, and your comment helped me see the real decision free of the spin and justification that cam with it.
rmbryan··on Facebook to ban white nationalist content
THANK YOU! That was helpful to read.

This is my favorite bit, from right at the top: "Hate speech in the United States is not regulated, in contrast to that of most other liberal democracies.[1] The U.S. Supreme Court has repeatedly ruled that hate speech is legally protected free speech under the First Amendment. The most recent Supreme Court case on the issue was in 2017, when the justices unanimously reaffirmed that there is effectively no "hate speech" exception to the free speech rights protected by the First Amendment."

rmbryan··on Facebook to ban white nationalist content
I don't know as much about hate as I should, perhaps, but it seems arbitrary to make rules about what's hate and what's not.

This part, especially, from the article... We also need to get better and faster at finding and removing hate from our platforms. Over the past few years we have improved our ability to use machine learning and artificial intelligence to find material from terrorist groups. Last fall, we started using similar tools to extend our efforts to a range of hate groups globally, including white supremacists. We’re making progress, but we know we have a lot more work to do.

My question is, how are you going to know when you're done? What would Facebook look like if they didn't have any more work to do on hate? I'm honestly asking this.

rmbryan··on Programmers take the easy way out and not implement proper password security
Considering their methodology of selecting for the lowest performing engineers and specifically NOT asking half of them to secure the passwords, I'm encouraged that their numbers were as good as they were.
rmbryan··on Hacker fakes German minister's fingerprints using photos of her hands
Here is one of the pictures this person said they used. Seem credible to you? https://www.dw.com/image/18154223_303.jpg
rmbryan··on The Illustrated Word2vec
Excellent article, thank you. My snag in thinking about word2vec is how the vector model stores information about words with multiple, significantly different definitions, such as 'polish', Eastern Europe or glistening clean.
rmbryan··on Arthur Whitney's 'B' Language
This was helpful to me: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/K_(programming_language)
rmbryan··on Datomic, Datalog, GraphQL, APIs, etc.
If "Hyperfiddle is after more of a vision where like, what would it take for my mom or my future kids to be programmers and yet not be professional software engineers." then I suggest you focus on drastically simplifying the vocabulary you use to explain what Hyperfiddle is.

For example: "This is a pastebin like environment for learning Hyperfiddle. Please namespace :idents with your username Schema changes are allowed To make a fiddle interactive, change tank.hyperfiddle.net to demo.hyperfiddle.net"

My mom no grok: pastebin, :idents, namespace as a verb, schema, "change" without a where to change.

Granted, this is a conversation between to engineers, so there's lexicon, but even listening, I get the sense that words get used without definition, or at least without a definition that speaker and listener share.

rmbryan··on Ask HN: What's your 'Why should i hire you?' response?
"This is the kind of work I'm passionate about. It's what I want to be doing." (It helps if that's authentic)
