I ask myself the same question.

I'm not seeing the apps, SaaS, and other tools I use getting better, with either more features or fewer bugs.

Whatever is being shipped, as an end user, I'm just not seeing it.

rkomorn··on French e, è, é, ê, ë – what's the difference?
I'm the other way around. I sound like a native US English speaker, but when I'm speaking English around French people who aren't as fluent, I "Frenchify" my accent so it's easier for them.

My spouse finds it amusing, which is probably the biggest benefit, TBH.

rkomorn··on LibreOffice and the art of overreacting
This is a great response. Thank you. :)

I'll check out oath.vote (maybe).

rkomorn··on French e, è, é, ê, ë – what's the difference?
To be fair, spelling bees usually have more complicated words (though the complicated ones are often borrowed from French anyway so, win-win for some of us).
rkomorn··on French e, è, é, ê, ë – what's the difference?
With the exception of some annoying ones like "fils" (son or sons) and "fils" (threads).

I think you're right that working in certain areas (geographical or professional) gives you an ability to grasp all kinds of English.

I've worked in universities and in tech, in New Jersey, LA, and Silicon Valley, and I feel like I can understand just about anyone's English.

Ironically, the ones I have the hardest time understanding are almost always Brits.

rkomorn··on French e, è, é, ê, ë – what's the difference?
You mean kinda like how (as I recently was informed) "ye olde" is actually pronounced "the old" but written "ye" because of printing issues, and consequently mispronounced by almost everyone?

Same with political donations in the US. I gave to one campaign 10 years ago and I've been getting consistent requests for donations since. So now they all get marked as spam.

The first one came right after my donation.

I guess it works for them but it's crazy to me that all these orgs basically make you regret ever donating in the first place.

Ironically, though, I've donated to Wikipedia and they've never bothered me more.

Edit: I'm not implying they wouldn't bother you, though! I have no idea.

rkomorn··on China is mass-producing hypersonic missiles for $99,000
Off topic but I can't help but snicker every time someone gets autocorrected into writing Rafael instead of Rafale (which I literally just had to correct, myself).
rkomorn··on Thoughts on slowing the fuck down
This is a bit of a no true Scotsman take but I agree with it anyway.
rkomorn··on I tried to prove I'm not AI. My aunt wasn't convinced
I think you might be right and I think I'll like some of the consequences and hate some of the others.

More in-person stuff feels like a win to me (and I say this as someone who probably counts as introverted).

Not being able to trust any online interactions anymore? Seems like a new height in what was already a negative.

rkomorn··on Data centers are transitioning from AC to DC
> What would be the real challenge would be going from 50 to 60Hz.

Other way around, no? The US is already 60Hz.

Edit: I mostly remember this because the SNES games I used to buy in the US and brought back to Europe ran noticeably slower.

2-3 drinks on a Friday night isn't.

2-3 drinks on a Friday night when you're supposed to drive home is different. I'd also say "I can drink because the law is wrong" is also not exactly a neutral take.

rkomorn··on Two pilots dead after plane and ground vehicle collide at LaGuardia
I don't envy anyone having to work in that airspace in any capacity.
rkomorn··on Why I love NixOS
I really want to like NixOS (and I mostly do) but the weirdness of the split between NixOS and HomeManager (and the fact that without HomeManager, you need another solution to manage your user-level configs) made it come up a bit short for me.
rkomorn··on Two pilots dead after plane and ground vehicle collide at LaGuardia
Busiest airspace and busiest airport are two different things, technically.

The airspace that combines JFK, LaGuardia, and Newark, is the busiest airspace in the US.

rkomorn··on Reports of code's death are greatly exaggerated
Depends. Do they use vim or emacs?

Scams are getting good enough that I'm now skeptical/paranoid every time I get a legit email.

"Click link" ? I think not. Gonna log in myself in a new window and try to navigate to the same thing on my own.

As a European who moved to the US for 20+ years then moved back to Europe, any idea that Europe is a shithole or has fallen is ludicrous.

If anything, the US degraded far more over the time I spent there than Europe did while I was away.

rkomorn··on A Japanese glossary of chopsticks faux pas (2022)
When it comes to manners, I'd say seeing enough people fail to meet a standard means it's not a standard, at least.
