rkk3··on Ask HN: Any weird tips for weight loss?
Drink 1-gallon of water a day, it's healthy & satiating

Get a kitchen-scale, it makes tracking serving sizes/portions 20x easier & accurate

rkk3··on Ask HN: How does TurboTax get away with dark patterns?
Pretty much everyone has to pay if you use turbo-tax, the "free" edition is not an IRS free file offering they don't advertise that one. There are very very very limited cases to not be hit by a "surprise" you need to upgrade and pay us from with money from your tax return. A staggering percentage of people who would have eligible to file for free under the IRS program end up paying because of the dark patterns, and the misleading marketing you for whatever reason are perpetuating.

2 years ago 37 Million people filed online who were eligible to use an IRS free file offering and only 6.8% did... [1]

> TurboTax is among the cheapest because it is free

Free? Haha in what world?

rkk3··on SF Mayor crafting a plan to push more downtown office workers to return in March
Think SF has a long way more to fall before it will have a renaissance, people forget how recently Detroit was on top too.

Only loosing 15% of office workers seems like a pipe dream when the largest employer in the city (Salesforce) and many other large employers have switched to permanently remote/remote friendly. Who wants to go into the office when the bars and restaurants are closed and the only people on the street are having a psychotic episodes.

Now that an annual SF convention isn't the status-quo, the billions in Convention spending aren't going to come flooding back either. The crime, homelessness, drug use, high cost & lack of hotel capacity make it an odd choice.

rkk3··on Why We Banned Legos (2006)
It's all kind of bizarre given the historical dominance of Mediterranean mathematicians, who did not look like they were from northern Europe or speak English. Do Pythagorus and Zeno sound white?

Maybe need to blame the BBC for the "Queens Latin"

rkk3··on Why are young people having so little sex? (2018)
My understanding is that obesity is a factor but not wholly explanatory, especially because there are documented sperm count declines in other species (Dogs)
rkk3··on Amazon sent the FBI to take my family’s bank accounts
Very few cases where you actually need or want a heavily armed police force to break down doors. Probably shouldn't have a system like this if we wouldn't want it applied to ourselves...

Reminds me of an old Chappelle's show skit. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HeOVbeh2yr0&ab_channel=Comed...

rkk3··on Why are young people having so little sex? (2018)
The societal/behavioral changes are interesting, but what about the physiological changes?

    Significant declines in sperm counts

Increased medicating; ADHD, Anxiety, Depression, Hormonal Birth Control

Childhood Obesity over 20% in the US
rkk3··on Confessions of a Bitcoin Widow
Sending "death threats" is a crime, it just isn't Murder
rkk3··on Airbnb wants to GPS track you also when not using the app
> Covid apps [...] They're completely optional and it's temporary

If wanting to enter a local business is "optional" and as the saying goes nothing is quite so permanent as a temporary government program.

rkk3··on Trudeau Invokes Emergencies Act
Because at this point it's not a particularly effective solution & is just political theater. It's also not just needing a vaccine you also need a non expired government-ID and a smart-phone to partake in society. And in 20 years these things will still be around, just like TSA and the Patriot act.
rkk3··on What American Mental Health Care Is Missing
I agree that lack of housing is a tremendous stressor and may cause or exacerbate mental health or substance use issues. Affordable housing has lots of benefits.

But when you look at the path that people took to being chronically visibly homeless on the street the pre-cursor in general isn't affordable housing.

> Roger’s parents wondered why, with so many advances in the science of mental health, their brilliant son was talking to voices and eating out of garbage cans.

rkk3··on What American Mental Health Care Is Missing
Yeah, I don't know how the author can be so flippantly optimistic about existing treatment options.

The system is not set up to help people get better.

The medications, which have the "best track record". Have an NNT of 5-10, severe side effects, and are so strong you risk rebound psychosis if you ever stop taking them. I think they really just help the institutions to manage patients in perpetuity.

rkk3··on What American Mental Health Care Is Missing
That makes sense if they are the same problem. In this case I think we've just linguistically bundled them together as "homeless" but they are actually completely distinct problems and groups.
rkk3··on What American Mental Health Care Is Missing
They are talking about Chronic Visible Homeless... a very different group than the majority of homeless population who don't; live on the street, talk to themselves, or murder complete strangers.
rkk3··on Career Change from Software Development
How big is the company? Is it all prestigious?

If you are at a small startup, your manager is just stringing you along... who knows if your 'friend' even got a raise, maybe they just got an inflated title at a no name company. I would look for an opportunity elsewhere

rkk3··on Is YC a Monopoly?
Punch up, generate outrage, capitalize on the attention.

TLDR: Another trash piece of provocation driven content-marketing.

rkk3··on Has Literature Ever Changed the Course of History?
I think you are asking about the ideas conveyed by the literature... but it used to be common for Politicians to fund their public-service career through books. Thats what Winston Churchill did. Not sure how important 'Mein Kampf' sales were to initially funding the Nazis.
rkk3··on TikTok Explicitly Bans Misgendering, Deadnaming, Promotion of Conversion Therapy
I wonder if China's FP plays into it at all. In the same way that Russia has tried to foment cultural unrest in the United states by promoting far left & far right groups.
rkk3··on TikTok Explicitly Bans Misgendering, Deadnaming, Promotion of Conversion Therapy
> It's a private company deciding they don't want to facilitate some speech.

Is it a private company? How much control does the CCP need to have over it before it's recognized as an arm of the state.

rkk3··on A Married Undercover Cop Having Sex with Activists Killed a Climate Movement
> if you are in favour of the rule of law, rather than people being sent to prison based on personal moral judgements of juries

They clearly violated their civil rights repeatedly over a period of years. They were already found liable for damages and paid out millions of dollars. Illicit activities & sex happen in undercover work... It's much more disturbing that the organizations sanctioned running operations that included having a 3 year plus romantic relationships, fathering children and proposing marriage... with non-violent activists... rape is not the right charge and shouldn't be shoehorned but that is such a gross violation and misuse of powers that should face criminal punishment.

rkk3··on A Married Undercover Cop Having Sex with Activists Killed a Climate Movement
Pretending to like? It's not like these were shallow conversations at a party... He lived with them and dated them for years while acting as an agent of the state. That is pretty unfathomable violation...
rkk3··on The End of Uber with Cory Doctorow
IDK there are lots of games you can play with accounting when you have as much cash flow Uber has and not operating at a profit is more of a tax-avoidance strategy than a 70B dollar scam on public market investors...

It's also wild how much money they need to commit to lobbying on the state and local level against union interests.

rkk3··on Highly virulent HIV variant found to be circulating in Europe for decades
Appendicitis is activated by inflammation and "not a problem" for most people. The Appendix organ hides in the body and waits to become inflamed to attack.

It's certainly in the realm of possibility EBV or other viruses have no benefit, but the history of medicine is harmful medical intervention after harmful medical intervention...

rkk3··on Netflix paid just 1.1 percent in Federal Tax
If you have a significant amount of cash flow you can find all sorts of tax benefits no one is forcing you to take the standard deduction when you file.

> why do I not only get these benefits, but I have to make up for all of these corporations getting these benefits by paying higher taxes. The money has to come from somewhere

Big-tech comp is so high in part of because the company can write off the equity grants. So perhaps you have been directly benefiting from it.

rkk3··on Ask HN: What's it like transitioning from SWE to PM?
> What was the biggest surprise?

PM's make significantly less & are significantly less in demand

rkk3··on Meta shares drop 20% on Q4 earnings miss, weak outlook
> I wonder why they didn't buy TikTok when it was starting to become popular like they did with Instagram or Whatsapp.

ByteDance was a large company before TikTok and had other successful products. TikTok actually developed out of a billion dollar acquisition Bytedance made[1]. It wasn't for sale. Sort of like how Tinder wasn't for sale because it was owned by IAC (Match, OkCupid).

Also regulatory environment in the US and in China would make it unfeasible.

rkk3··on On Why I'm Quitting Alcohol

rkk3··on On Why I'm Quitting Alcohol
If 3 drinks make you cry, not sure if you really ever started.
rkk3··on Zen and the Art of Talking to Conspiracy Theorists
Masks in March of 2020 vs 2022 are kind of different. What is "Trivial" to you isn't to everybody... my covid-vaccinated ESL 5 year old has to cover their face & learn from a covid-vaccinated teacher who's face is covered all day. My child's speech, social & emotional learning isn't trivial to me.
