rkhassen9··on Ask HN: What is the most annoying part of scheduling meetings?
It varies widely. Often enough they pick a time and within a round of emails and we set a meeting for 6-8 folks.

Occasionally it can take a couple of rounds. It’s the uncertainty of it and owning it that’s the thing.

rkhassen9··on Ask HN: What is the most annoying part of scheduling meetings?
Yup. It’s the back and forth.

We offer a number of times/dates and if it’s a high profile meeting we have to block them all on our side until they respond. It’s a lot of steps for something that could be automated somehow, especially if there are key folks who may need to change at the last moment.

rkhassen9··on Ask HN: What is the most annoying part of scheduling meetings?
Coordinating the best available time for all, esp with folks at diff companies.
rkhassen9··on Ask HN: Any interesting niche hobbies?
Oooh. Would love to see photos and plans! I’m wanting to build one too.
rkhassen9··on Ask HN: Any interesting niche hobbies?
This is awesome. I think there is something about making your own sense of things, your own order that brings an aliveness and a freshness to an experience. I will try this.
rkhassen9··on Men in their 50s may be aging faster due to toxic 'forever chemicals'
Why the hate on the gens?

Most of this stuff was not widely known. There was no internet, so you only got info from 3 tv channels and a newspaper, magazines and conversation.

Blame it on the corps.

rkhassen9··on Ask HN: What are your best purchases under $100?
Awesome list. Do you publish more somewhere? Great stuff and thought processes.

Backup phone, vpn router, etc.

Thank you

rkhassen9··on Volkswagen Brings Back Physical Buttons
Agreed on all points.
rkhassen9··on Attention lapses due to sleep deprivation due to flushing fluid from brain
I once found a recording of a lab session in high school physics. A day I completely forgot about. A moment that had no bookmarks in my brain.

Other things about that day were surfaced. How my braces felt and the fear I felt about forgetting a textbook.

All real, but unsurfaced until then.

rkhassen9··on 10M people watched a YouTuber shim a lock; the lock company sued him – bad idea
Um...shouldn't Proven just hire Trevor McNally as a consultant or heck, make him a partner? I mean...can you imagine the next level reputation they'd have if they can adapt and make a Trevor-proof lock?

I'd buy it.

Horror of horrors. Please no.

Would love a coffee table book of Fry's. The themes alone would make good viewing!
rkhassen9··on Ask HN: Why is Gmail so incompetent at basic search?
>”How bad I find the search in Outlook and Teams is one of the reasons I refuse to trust Bing. I know they are completely separate divisions, but still…”

I wonder if you are referring to the online version of Outlook which is awful. And agreed regarding Teams…!

For clarity It’s the desktop imap version of Outlook with a local downloaded db that searches so well for us.

rkhassen9··on Ask HN: Why is Gmail so incompetent at basic search?
Typically will use Gmail in the browser for sending and recieving emails…but for searching my Gmail, it’s Outlook, ironically, which works the best.

Don’t trust Outlook for other functions in Gmail reliably though. Or Calendar. Examples are things like double emails being sent and calendar updates being missed.

At our company a lot of people use Outlook to handle their Gmail functions and it’s quite problematic…but Outlook’s search is far superior.

So I think of the browser as the main interface and only use Outlook for search.

It must!
rkhassen9··on Thoughts on thinking
Agreed. It’s been awhile!
rkhassen9··on Thoughts on thinking
It is the societal recognition and value of level and contribution that AI threatens and weakens. This is the true loss.
rkhassen9··on Thoughts on thinking
I think you articulated the actual point of the OP. It isn’t so much about creating something better than anyone else, but it is a feeling that your contribution and world means something.

AI can somehow cause one to react with a feeling of futility.

Engaging in acts of creation, and responding to others acts of creation seems a way out of that feeling.

rkhassen9··on Thoughts on thinking
I’ve thought the same. Goons powered by AI, that is.
rkhassen9··on Sailing from Berkeley to Hawaii in a 19ft Sailboat
For a long trip like that, I can see it, but 24 days…!

Neat story through!!

rkhassen9··on Sailing from Berkeley to Hawaii in a 19ft Sailboat
Thank you so much! This is exactly b what I was wondering.

Much gratitude!

rkhassen9··on Sailing from Berkeley to Hawaii in a 19ft Sailboat
But double bagging each can for a trip seemed excessive.

Maybe he’s concerned about cans banging around on a boat.

Thanks for your thoughts!

rkhassen9··on Sailing from Berkeley to Hawaii in a 19ft Sailboat
"Generally I relied on canned goods to supply the bulk of my meals. Each can was protected in double Ziplock bags to prevent rusting. Pinhole leaks in cans caused by rust and corrosion can be lethal to the unsuspecting mariner."

Is a pinhole leak on a can really that dangerous on a 24 day trip. I get ocean air...but wow. That is something I would have underestimated for sure.

wondering if someone in the know can weigh in? is this over cautious or like yeah, good idea?

rkhassen9··on Ask HN: Do your eyes bug you even though your prescription is "correct"?
I did…then I went to another eye doctor who found that my prescription was off because they were plastic. She recommended glass. Then it was much better
rkhassen9··on Apple introduces iPad Air with powerful M3 chip and new Magic Keyboard
@cridell - I think people write comments like this because, like me, they are trying to envision using the device as a replacement for the laptop...or as an additional augment and come up short. I know I do.

And for all that hardware it is disappointing that there are so many things it cannot do that you can do on MacOS and its really hard to envision what you can do.

My last ipad which admittedly was a v1 gathered dust. I really want a pro for whiteboarding...but gosh, its a lot to spend on a whiteboard....someone help me justify it as a PM.

rkhassen9··on Ask HN: Are Forums Dead?
I really prefer the forum format. It was easy to follow threads...and to find out what worked, doesn't work and who is reputable/like minded to follow.

Other formats are so opaque..

rkhassen9··on Spotted hyena found in Egypt for the first time in 5k years
seems like there are lots of stories like this. X creature, not seen in ages found again.

Could it be genetic engineering. Some prankster billionaires scientist wanting to repopulate the world?

Or are we just getting better at finding them with more tools. (better camera traps, drones, data mining tools with AI?)

I'm curious, does anyone know? Is my billionaire prankster concept plausible? or totally implausible?

rkhassen9··on Ask HN: Books about people who did hard things
@jvanderbot agreed. I think you are on to something. where can we go to learn more?
rkhassen9··on Ask HN: Books about people who did hard things
ghaff. you said the first part well well. Welch "looked great" its the second part "until it wasn't." that stands out to me...because his approach, to kill the goose to get the golden eggs, so to speak, was doomed from the beginning. Its just hard to tell early on if you don't know what to look for. People in his orgs knew what was happening, but hard to go against the "hero".

I don't know a solution to these kinds of scenarios except for having a more wise and educated populace. Perhaps trusting the people at the bottom. Big issues. Hard to solve. And in today's world, harder than ever.
