rjvir··on Alphabet Becomes the Most Valuable Public Company in the World
According to Google Finance, it appears that Alphabet has a market capitalization of $517B, which is far different than the $558B quoted in the article. This does not appear to be a temporary fluctuation. https://www.google.com/finance?q=NASDAQ%3AGOOGL

Am I missing something? Based on the current market cap numbers on Google Finance, Apple is still higher than Alphabet.

rjvir··on Soundcloud for the Desktop
For me, the main allure of the a desktop app is the support for media keys.

For those interested, there is a Mac app called BeardedSpice that maps the media keys to a variety of websites (Youtube, SoundCloud, BandCamp, etc).

rjvir··on Let’s continue to build Product Hunt, together
> Once the product has received a significant number of credible upvotes (those that aren’t manipulated by voting rings) from the community, will be promoted to the homepage within 48 hours.

> Everyone’s upvote is equal — my upvote counts the same as yours — and ultimately upvotes determine what rises to the top of Product Hunt.

To me, this was a direct contradiction.

rjvir··on The first person to hack the iPhone is building a self-driving car
Who cares about how many people built it? What matters is the end product, which is something that existed in the 80s.
rjvir··on Introducing OpenAI
> Sam, Greg, Elon, Reid Hoffman, Jessica Livingston, Peter Thiel, Amazon Web Services (AWS), Infosys, and YC Research are donating to support OpenAI. In total, these funders have committed $1 billion

Funny how they just slipped that in at the end

rjvir··on LeBron James Signs Unprecedented Lifetime Contract with Nike
At likely much better contracts than their competitors have for their marquee athletes.
rjvir··on The CEO Paying Everyone $70,000 Salaries Has Something to Hide
But why would the other person's salary affect you?
rjvir··on YC at Hack the North
A rather elaborate response to a pretty childish critique.
rjvir··on Apple TV Markup Language
The iPhone name worked out pretty well, even though the phone functionality is just a small fraction of the iPhone's value proposition.
rjvir··on Change Your Name
> 100% of the top 20 YC companies by valuation have the .com of their name. 94% of the top 50 do. But only 66% of companies in the current batch have the .com of their name.

That's not a straight comparison. A better stat would be, what percentage of the top 20 YC companies had the .com while they were in the active YC batch?

rjvir··on The Hackathon Fast Track: From Campus to Silicon Valley
Please suggest a better alternative to simulate the culture and mentality of a startup, for a typical 18 year old who is not a part of the world of tech.
rjvir··on Pebble has recaptured the top spot for most-funded project on Kickstarter
How do you know what Steve Jobs would have done? Wouldn't Cook, Ive, and others who have worked next to him for over a decade be better equipped to make product judgements than any of us?
rjvir··on Stripe Connect v2
Whenever I see one of their products, I always think "if it's that good on the outside, imagine how good it is on the inside".
rjvir··on The new MacBook
I think the ideal scenario would be to show the App Store description and screenshots from the last available version. This way, it would be the version last advertised on the App Store.
rjvir··on Ask HN: What up with these startup salaries?
"Hype" could just be a confounding variable - a side effect of just generally being an attractive place to work at. Perhaps they aren't over-valuing hype per se, but instead valuing companies they think will be successful. Many companies that will succeed happen to have a lot of hype (although obviously hype isn't the best indicator).
rjvir··on Why the Sony hack is unlikely to be the work of North Korea
What about a slight variation of #1: North Korea massively funding a Chinese hacker group to carry out the attack.
rjvir··on Reaction to the Sony Hack Is 'Beyond the Realm of Stupid'
Fair enough. From the average moviegoers standpoint, it's probably not too risky to watch the movie on opening day.

That being said, I disagree with the 5% chance that the threat actually gets carried through. It is not overwhelmingly difficult to carry through this type of threat, since North Korea has a large budget and theaters don't have security.

And from Sony's perspective, it doesn't matter if 6 people dying in Tennessee (random example) is only a small percentage of their overall viewers - it's human lives on their hands in a scenario that could have been easily avoided.

rjvir··on Reaction to the Sony Hack Is 'Beyond the Realm of Stupid'
It's not an empty threat. They completely compromised Sony's servers. Who knows what they haven't leaked yet, or what they are capable of.

The movie theaters decided to not show the movie because they couldn't implement a nationwide security system in every one of their theaters in 2 weeks. Since there is 0 security at movie theaters, I as a moviegoer would be extremely scared to go to watch this movie in it's opening week.

rjvir··on Reaction to the Sony Hack Is 'Beyond the Realm of Stupid'
They could have massively funded a group of hackers in China to carry out the attack.
rjvir··on Google May Lead $500M Round in Magic Leap Virtual Reality Tech
$500M sounds like a typo. That is absolutely unheard of for a stealth company. For reference, Oculus had a $75M round last December, and they had ignited an entire VR developer community. Uber had a record setting round earlier this year and raised $1.2 billion. But Uber is... well, Uber.
rjvir··on Hold the Phone: A Big-Data Conundrum
That's also how the GMail website still acts, which confuses me as well. Why can Facebook load a complex web app instantly while GMail still shows a loading bar on launch?
rjvir··on Social Login Buttons Aren't Worth It (2012)
Not only that, Facebook's default privacy settings are set up in a way which most users' proper email address is not exposed to sites using social login.
rjvir··on Amazon Prime Music
I don't see the point - it doesn't have Jason Derulo's latest album, nor does it have Ariana Grande's.
rjvir··on The new X-Men movie explained in Git
I think the idea is that you don't have access to the other timeline, because none of the characters should. All that's left of the dark timeline is in Wolverines's head, which is accounted for!
rjvir··on Data mining Reddit posts reveals how to ask for a favor and get it
Do you think someone with an account of say 10 karma points and 2 comments on a month old account is equally likely to receive help, ceteris paribus?
rjvir··on Shit Hackers Say
As someone who has been to way too many hackathons, this video resonates with me so much that it's depressing.
rjvir··on Stripe: Bitcoin Sign-up
Stripe doesn't mess around with innovator's dilemma. Bitcoin was one of their weaknesses and now they could turn it into a strength overnight.
rjvir··on Flappy 2048
Your score should double after every level, instead of increment by 1. Otherwise it would take forever to get to 2048!
rjvir··on Intern at a YC Company
Also getting blank screen, on iPhone 5s
rjvir··on Why does Apple continue killing bitcoin apps?
And yet, Square frequently gets featured by Apple.
