rjvir··on Vue.js vs. React
Yup, the marginal convenience advantages to web apps are so minimal compared to the ability to write legitimate native mobile apps.

Vue.js and Angular are complete non-starters for me since they don't have native counterparts.

rjvir··on Snapchat acquires social map app Zenly
Yes, like a Tequila company founded by George Clooney getting bought for $1b today
rjvir··on Snap Inc. Reports First Quarter 2017 Results
This article mentions that Google Plus had a staff of greater than 1,000:

> Plus, by comparison, had upwards of 1,000 [people on staff], sucked up from divisions across the company.

rjvir··on Snap Inc. Reports First Quarter 2017 Results
Over 1000 Googlers were cranking on Google Plus, which at the time was a Facebook copy cat.

What makes Facebook so threatening to Snapchat is the aggressive cloning in tandem with it's pre-existing, larger network.

By the time Google decided to clone Facebook, the Facebook Graph was already more powerful than the GMail graph (which is what Google Plus was built on).

rjvir··on Snap Inc. Reports First Quarter 2017 Results
Facebook at least had incredible growth.

This report shows Snapchat missing on that mark too.

rjvir··on The Mark Zuckerberg Manifesto Is a Blueprint for Destroying Journalism
The fundamental challenge is that of having hand-delivered paper newspapers be the centralized hub of information.

Any manifestation of the Internet makes that obsolete - but the specific method of obsoletion may be different by country.

rjvir··on The Mark Zuckerberg Manifesto Is a Blueprint for Destroying Journalism
Maybe phrasing it another way could be useful: with or without Facebook, the journalism industry would be heavily declining.

Yes, Facebook is how many people use the Internet - but it's a mistake to therefore conclude Facebook is responsible for journalism's decline.

rjvir··on The Mark Zuckerberg Manifesto Is a Blueprint for Destroying Journalism
This chart (https://twitter.com/benthompson/status/778260618914652164) suggests that Facebook should not a lone scapegoat for journalism's decline - the internet as a whole is a more reasonable target.
rjvir··on Open-sourcing Chrome on iOS
How many of the top 100 websites are open source? Sure, it's not zero, but large open source production products are rare to begin with.
rjvir··on Welcoming Fabric to Google
What does this mean for Twitter Digits? Will their free SMS authentications continue?

It would be a perfect fit if they phased in Twitter Digits as a Firebase authentication provider - I suspect many developers (including myself) already use these 2 services in tandem.

rjvir··on Upping the Ante: Top Poker Pros Face Off vs. Artificial Intelligence
Assuming the bot can communicate with other players, what's stopping it from being smart enough to negotiate it's own collusion schemes?
rjvir··on AirPods are now available
I think that might not be possible with AirPods. One of it's features is that it stops playing music when you take out one of the ears.
rjvir··on YC’s 2016 Holiday Gift Guide
I don't think gift cards are a big conspiracy from the retail industry that primarily perpetuated the idea that cash is a bad gift.

It seems more likely that cash became unpopular independently. And for good reason! Trading cash during holidays really ruins the fun!

Perhaps the retail industry was just responding to demand - the market may just want gift cards!

rjvir··on How (not) to forecast an election: Analysis via a hierarchical Bayesian model
On the other hand, it often seems like news coverage is biased in the direction of a horse race. As in, the media is incentivized to make it seem like a close race with a lot of action, because that is engaging.
rjvir··on Postmates Secures $141M in a ‘Super, Super Difficult’ Fundraising Effort
> Postmates raised $141 million in a financing round led by Founders Fund. The San Francisco VC firm, co-founded by billionaire Peter Thiel

So much for the Silicon Valley boycott of Peter Thiel.

I wonder if they would have raised from Thiel if they were in a position of strength, and had other options.

rjvir··on ESPN Loses 621,000 Subscribers; Worst Month in Company History
Bundles are often great deals for consumers. The TV bundle is the result of decades of scale, iteration, and the free market.

TV has a lot of weaknesses, but I don't think its bundle economics are one of them.

The most successful alternatives to TV are also bundles, and the bundling is a critical part of their success. Imagine instead of paying $10/month for Netflix, you had to pay for each show a la carte (like iTunes). That would be worse for consumers - and creators.

rjvir··on ESPN Loses 621,000 Subscribers; Worst Month in Company History
They are learning the hard way the drawbacks of being uncompromising in the belief of antiracism.
rjvir··on I’m Joining Stripe to Work on Atlas
> Working on Atlas at Stripe has that potential for impact and you get to work with awesome founders

Same with countless other jobs, such as working at Facebook, Google, Amazon, Snapchat, etc

rjvir··on Twitch could be a $20B company within Amazon
That proportion is not too relevant for this graph. The graph is relative.

Even if a only a small percentage of Twitch users use Google search to access Twitch, the graph would be somewhat indicative of it's growth.

rjvir··on Twitch could be a $20B company within Amazon
The graph is relative.

The idea is that Twitch viewership is correlated with Google searches - not that Google search is responsible for all Twitch traffic.

rjvir··on Twitch could be a $20B company within Amazon
It's worth noting that in the 2 year period since Amazon bought Twitch, their search interest via Google has been stagnant.

rjvir··on “It's The Future”
There was a time when Heroku seemed just as foreign to me as Docker does in this article.

- So shared webhosting is dead, apparently Heroku is the future?

- Why Ruby, why not just PHP?

- Wait, what's Rails? Is that different from Ruby?

- What's MVC, why do I need that for my simple website?

- Ok, so I need to install RubyGems? What's a Gemfile.lock? None of these commands work on Windows.

- I don't like this new text editor. Why can't I just use Dreamweaver?

- You keep talking about Git. Do I need that even if I'm working alone?

- I have to use command line to update my site? Why can't I just use FTP?

- So Github is separate from Git? And my code is stored on Github, not Heroku?

- Wait, I need to install both PGSql and SQLite? Why is this better than MySQL?

- Migrations? Huh?

rjvir··on Apple says Pokémon Go is the most downloaded app in its first week ever
Pokemon Go has shattered every record (downloads, engagement, revenue, etc). It's not just downloads.
rjvir··on Apple launches coding camps for kids in its retail stores
I remember going to Apple Camp as a kid (around 2006). At the time, they had different sessions teaching kids how to "edit movies", "make music", "build websites" etc. They were showing us how to use iMovie, GarageBand, and iWeb.

After attending those camps, I so badly wanted a Mac.

rjvir··on Netflix Will Be the Exclusive US TV Home of Disney, Marvel, Lucasfilm and Pixar
If it's ever clear that eliminating certain types of deals (eg exclusive) is beneficial from a revenue standpoint, studios would likely do so.
rjvir··on Netflix Will Be the Exclusive US TV Home of Disney, Marvel, Lucasfilm and Pixar
Why is ESPN an exception?

Their price is a reflection of how much people want it. ESPN (and sports as a whole) are a big driver of cable subscriptions, which helps all cable channels.

rjvir··on Save Netflix
Still requires an external Laptop/PC, you would not be able to install custom software using only the device itself.
rjvir··on Show HN: Scalable reverse image search built on Kubernetes and Elasticsearch
Would be useful if they put up a simple site with an image uploader that demos the search
rjvir··on Parker Conrad Steps Down as Zenefits CEO
"Put ourselves first" (the opposite of #2) is kind of similar to "Make this a great place to work for employees" (#3).
rjvir··on Flash-Free Video in 2016
Apple not supporting Flash was a crucial part of it's demise, though. Without that, we might be running Flash on mobile today, even though it was terrible.
