rizzaxc··on AI used to re-enact court transcripts [video]
I find this usage of AI absolutely brilliant (and ethical): No editorial change or loss of information compared to human reporters, and it vastly improves the accessibility of the information. I think the "voice acting" alone is worth it if you find the visualization off-putting.
rizzaxc··on Don't force your kids to do math
as someone who loved maths first but then do programming for a living, it's because solving puzzles is fun. I get the same dopamine hit whether it's a math problem, a coding task, or a video game level. but I think forcing yourself to like something is not the correct approach; you either like it naturally or you tolerate it for some other goals
rizzaxc··on MacBook Air M4
genuine question; why would you do that lol? phones easily get full day battery nowadays, and flagships get 2 day battery if your usage is anything but insane
rizzaxc··on JetBrains Fleet drops support for Kotlin Multiplatform
i find its biggest problem is its json ecosystem; very clunky and boilerplate-y
rizzaxc··on U.S. math scores drop on major international test
I'm not sure if you've noticed, but China make high tech products all the time. ok not semiconductors, but cars, trains, clothings, medicines etc... even social media. maybe they steal some of it, but everything?
rizzaxc··on M4 MacBook Pro
the Air doesn't have ProMotion right? that feature is non-negotiable on any display for me nowadays
rizzaxc··on Show HN: Flyon UI – Tailwind Components Library
I'm tempted to try this in my SvelteKit app. What do I lose compared to a React user?
rizzaxc··on Are any words the same in all languages?
haha is Chinese, so also a "loan" word
rizzaxc··on Korean Air is asking passengers to step on the scales before boarding
how would you do that? once you board people on you can't kick them out; and who would you kick? the fattest ones? also, they need to rebalance with fuel if the plane is overweight. you can't do that with people on board. not to mention finding a scale able to handle a few tons...
rizzaxc··on LK-99 is an online sensation but replication efforts fall short
SC requires a critical temperature, so the "cooling" part leading to the "producing" part is correct
rizzaxc··on Show HN: CodePerfect, a fast, lightweight IDE for Go
It's not what the language is for. Go is really strong for greenfield server projects (and bad pretty much anywhere else)
rizzaxc··on Gitless: A simple VCS built on top of Git
can you explain? to me SOP is feature branch, work there, commit occasionally, then when it's good review, squash and merge (99% of the times done on remote). the history is clean with the ticket ID attached to the final merge commit (as the feature branch is treated as atomic)
rizzaxc··on Gitless: A simple VCS built on top of Git
if the interviewee would be a direct report of the interviewer, I dont see the issue
rizzaxc··on Ask HN: Is everyone becoming a Product Manager these days?
this is not true in my experience. they are often 1 or 2 paygrades (literally) below engineers, controlled for ranks
rizzaxc··on Reddit CEO tells employees that subreddit blackout ‘will pass’
so you care about having a place to gather, to talk about your hobby and usually at the mods' effort to aggregate content (I assume since these are always the most upvoted and most commented threads on match day), but you don't find their job "that much useful"?
rizzaxc··on Pause Giant AI Experiments: An Open Letter
not everyone can resist instant gratification; not to mention the intelligence hurdle 'pursuing creative projects, and inventing new problems to solve' entails. i think both are true, that humans need to be needed but we're also wired to be 'lazy' and 'energy efficient'
rizzaxc··on Modern software performance is firmly in its “beyond parody” stage
it's pretty obvious if you game. if you don't but code with efficient tools (and we have a lot: vscode, jetbrains, terminal) it's still easily worth it
rizzaxc··on Binance sees $2B in outflows as troubles compound
how can you argue the utility of BTC vs Netflix? one is ultimately fugazy, the other provides a legitimate service. now unless its board colludes to tank its stock price, it's not a scam since the company still does what it says on the tin
rizzaxc··on Blizzard Infuriate Devs, End Remote Work, Cut Profit Sharing Bonus, Insult QA
Only overwatch's managed to become something, and it's getting its lunch eaten by Valorant. the rest are all rehashed content of old, deprecating existing IPs
rizzaxc··on I Thought I Was Saving Trans Kids. Now I’m Blowing the Whistle
there is no doctor in the second case. the wokemind is just a big ball of hypocrisy
rizzaxc··on Mandatory DEI statements are becoming the norm in academic hiring
why not? quality peers and staff absolutely make each student better thinker, more risk tolerant, and more likely to find suitable cofounders and/ or help during bootstrap
rizzaxc··on The pool of talented C++ developers is running dry
do you have a good template (pun intended) on how to best learn modern c++? coming from Go and Typescript which have very mature devX tooling, c++ is a landmine to navigate. and that's when I already have professional experience with it (the place just didn't have strong c++ culture)
rizzaxc··on Ask HN: Son is major in CS, but doesn't code. Red flag?
this line of thinking is insane. I completely understand wanting to be independent, but hostility toward elder's care is just bizarre. a child doesn't just evolve to be a responsible adult on their 18th birthday like a pokemon, especially now that distractions are so easy to access. how many 'adults' have you seen make bad decisions (often ignoring their parents' advice) and later come crawling back to mom's basement? personally, I've seen too many, and the parents aren't gonna shut the door to their face
rizzaxc··on Ask HN: Why is Tesla stock dropping? Meta?
this is like saying why does rich people get to have their own maids and butlers so they never have to do any housework, and effectively double their time in a day.

at the end of the day, everyone has a boss and Elon's is the general public. his stock is tanking. while you can say it's not the same as being fired as a regular employee (and it's not), he doesn't 'get to do that'

rizzaxc··on Recommendations for Japan Travel
you'll find that almost every major corner of the internet is obsessed with Japan
rizzaxc··on Ask HN: Are you a “lifer”? If so why?
i think grandparent meant that even if your company decides to 'capitalize' (pun intended) on your lifer attitude, you're ok with it, because you've chosen to ignore money in favor of stability. only works if you already have a couple of millions from your younger years imo
rizzaxc··on What is the history of ‘Vox populi, vox Dei’? (2013)
and I'm sure you know he was forced out as CEO by the board even though he had the most equity, mostly because he was pushing terrible branding (X instead of PayPal), product and engineering decisions (Windows instead of Linux,...) and getting into arguments with the folks who'd made PayPal working.

Really makes you think 'ride or die' management style doesn't work with boring products like money wiring or social meds

rizzaxc··on What “diversity and inclusion” means at Microsoft
hold up you need DIE to convince investors? how does this make sense; wouldn't they be more concerned about your company's cold, hard numbers?
rizzaxc··on SAT score distributions in Michigan
Individually we can't get smarter all of a sudden, but as a society we can provide better platform for the smartest of us to contribute: bring (quasi)meritocracy back; do away with all these AA nonsense. Not very feasible with the political climate right now (or just American culture in general - `nerd` is such a weird insult). We can't win them on quantity, but at least we don't lose outright. And no I don't think Chinese are just smarter, they just try gigahard because you gotta compete with the other babillion Chinese peers somehow, and there's no AA to save you
rizzaxc··on SAT score distributions in Michigan
if it's any help, Gaokao is a much, much harder test than SAT, and there's only 1 test in a year, so an average Chinese (or Korean, Japanese, Vietnamese,... as they all have the same thing) in general would do much better than your average American in SAT
