rivo··on How to Center in CSS
Unfortunately, this page does not give a solution to a long-standing centering problem I've had: Given a single DIV of unknown width and height, how do I center it in the middle of the screen (floating, i.e. fixed)? Note the "single DIV" so no wrapping in additional container DIVs!

The only approximation I could find was this:

  .mydiv {
    position: fixed;
    top: 50%;
    left: 50%;
    transform: translate(-50%,-50%);
  }
This, however, looks horrible on most browsers as they either use hardware acceleration (resulting in blurry output) or they drop pixels (e.g. single-pixel lines) falling between the grid.
rivo··on Get away with Google Flights
The big trend in the airline industry is to customize prices and availabilities to each individual request. Your location (IP address), your frequent flyer status (if logged in), the competitor's current prices, the distribution channel (e.g. web or travel agent, GDS) will all have an influence on what is presented to you. Meta search engines have had a difficult time reporting accurate fares even in the past when it was much simpler. In the future, it'll be almost impossible.
rivo··on Go 1.4 is released
It's Go's simplicity that really struck a nerve with me. I've been coding for over 30 years now (Basic, ASM, C/C++, Java, Python, PHP, JS, Clojure) and with Go, I just love how everything is laid out for you: idiomatic Go, formatting, commenting, unit testing, concurrence, standard libraries etc. I don't have to research the basic tools. It keeps me focused on the task at hand. I'm very productive with Go. We have it in production and I'm super happy with it. (Btw, I never missed generics. If you pick a language based on its number of features, Go may not be for you.)
rivo··on Ask HN: Idea Sunday
I believe it's crowdsourced. There are many items I eat that they don't have in their database. The app allows you to submit the nutrition info to their database and it gets recognized afterwards. MyFitnessPal is very popular. They should have one of the biggest databases out there.
rivo··on How Expedia Buys Its Way To The Top Of Google
A friend of mine used to work for one of these paid content agencies. Her job was to set up a few Wordpress blogs a day while writers filled them with content. Apparently, among their clients were lots of large companies. It seems, though, that after Google's crackdown on duplicate/fake content etc. they had to take a massive hit in revenues. They've since let most of their employees go and have - so far not very successfully - been looking for a new business model.
rivo··on Starting an Airline
My co-founder and I have a combined 20+ years of experience in the airline software industry. When we set out to start our own business, it was clear that we were not going to sell to airlines. Too many legacy systems, too much historically grown cruft, needless complexity, too many individual requirements but no money to pay for it. Plus they're distributed all over the world so selling to them is very costly. It's a shame because we would have had a big head start in terms of domain knowledge.

rivo··on Youtube claims I don't own my own film
One of my music videos on YouTube is blocked in Germany with a note that it infringes copyright. I wrote the music and the lyrics myself. I shot the video myself. I'm the sole copyright owner. The appeal didn't lead anywhere. It was detected as such because it's likely registered on Content ID because it was published by Sony, the record label. But Sony does not have the copyright. Still. Nothing I can do. (Even calling up Sony to resolve this didn't lead anywhere.)
rivo··on What time is it?
Looking at this from my office in Berlin, I thought "wow, they're even using GeoIP and some clever compositing to adjust the background to wherever I am."
rivo··on This Photograph Is Not Free
I don't understand this. Upload your image to a (micro)stock agency to sell it, then see how much it is really worth, i.e. how much people will pay for it in the free market. (Value and production cost are two very different things.) But making it available like this while claiming it's worth $6,612 seems naive to me at best.

rivo··on Life lessons learned in travelling the world for 8 years straight
I met a guy once who, at the time, had benen travelling for 7 years. His main advice was: Don't get married. You don't want to know how much people cheat on their sopouses.
rivo··on London Is Gonna Be Pissed, But We Prefer Berlin for Startups
We had our (supposedly?) first HN Meetup Berlin last week and want to do it on a regular basis:

rivo··on Sequoia gives photo-sharing startup more money than they gave Google
Maybe it would help to increase the proximity radius dynamically so you always get results. It probably would have made your first-run user experience better, even if the photos had been taken farther away (same city, same state, or same country).
rivo··on Things I've Learned from Traveling Around the World for Three Years
I got sick a few times from street-vendor food in 3rd world countries. It turned out that they often reuse oil for too long. I now avoid deep-fried food, dirty or tap water, and things like ice-cream. I've been fine on my travels since.
rivo··on Inside the secret world of Trader Joe's
If you would like to know more about what made the Albrecht brothers' stores so successful, you should read Dieter Brandes's book. It think the English version is this one:

rivo··on Ask HN: How do I ask for a salary increase?
I did the following two times. They were the only times I tried and I was successful in both cases:

-I researched how much I should be getting and brought that data to the meeting with my boss. It's usually a little tricky because most data is one-dimensional (e.g. salary per years of experience) but it also opens up more ways to interpret it to your benefit. I insisted on comparing to the market and not to my co-workers.

-I always highlighted what the company or my boss was getting with my work. Never what I needed for myself. Also think about how much it would cost them to replace you.

-I highlighted how my work was changing and how that change should be reflected in my salary (e.g. more responsibility).

-I was open to creative solutions, such as getting half of the raise now, half of it a year later.

-I was prepared to leave if he had strictly refused without good reasons (e.g. a strict company-wide freeze on raises).

The last time I did this, the raise was 33%.

rivo··on How Do I Win Rock Paper Scissors Every Time
I remember reading an article a while back about some World Championship of Rock Paper Scissors. The winner back then said that most players with a "strategy" eventually failed. The only thing he did was think of a random sequence before playing and then stick to it.
rivo··on The End of Location Based Applications?
I have recently been addressed with my name by a flight attendant. I fly a lot but it's been the first time ever. They've always had this information but they almost never use it. I wonder if it would be the same in stores.
rivo··on Why Enterprise Software Sucks
I work for a company which develops software for airlines. Our product is bought simply because it makes them 1.8% more revenue per year. We could have the greatest user interface and it wouldn't matter at all. The users are ignored. I've seen customers replace users because they had a hard time to adapt to the interface of the new software. Sad but true.
rivo··on Google agrees to buy ITA Software for $700 million
It's not the first project that I have seen that was cancelled. Building a PSS (RES and/or INV) is not a small thing, given that there is so much complexity in the airline industry which has to be supported. I think it would be very exciting if Google continued these developments. Some of the major players (e.g. 1A) are in a quasi-monopoly and they definitely exploit that. More competition would be good. (But I agree, I don't see why Google would want to compete.)

Btw, many of the PSS vendors already have or are currently in the process of renewing their "expensive mainframes with ugly old code bases".

rivo··on Open Source HTML5 Video Player with WebM/VP8 (from Zencoder, YC W10)
It seems that HTML5 will force people to allow embedding Javascript. How will we be able to avoid cross-site scripting attacks this way?
rivo··on The Best Method to Master a Foreign Language, Guaranteed
I moved to Canada when I was 23 and left when I was 25. After those two years, native English speakers frequently wouldn't believe that I was from Germany and that I didn't grow up speaking English.

My take on becoming good at speaking a foreign language: You must make an effort, it will not come to you passively. You must be willing to "forget" what you already know. Listen to yourself. Ask other people to help and/or correct you. Try to learn like a child. Play with the language. Be curious.

(On another note, I also realized that not having an accent got me into fewer conversations since people would not bother asking me where I was from.)

rivo··on Distributed Facebook replacement Diaspora pledged 2x the funding it requested
Every other day, I get invited to join some "protest against Facebook's plans to introduce usage fees" group. I never got invited to a "protest against Facebook's privacy policies" group. (There may be such groups but none of my friends have ever mentioned it.)

Maybe positioning a competitor as "guaranteed to always be free" could be a better plan (even when FB will likely always be free).

rivo··on Panic-inspired Dashboard Made From Photo Frame for ~$150. Code is OSS.
About a year ago, I bought my parents a Phillips digital frame with wireless which (8FF3WMI) could read directly from a feed with no third party software. As long as you don't use the URL anywhere else, no one will be able to find it.

I built a small web interface for it where we can all upload pictures. My family is in different parts of the world so it's nice to send the pictures right into my parents' living room with two mouse clicks.

The frame re-scans the feed about every 10 minutes.

rivo··on Ever Notice How Often the Cities on Google Maps Change?
Maybe they're not even experimenting. Maybe when you change something in one place (e.g. adding a landmark), it affects the layout of a whole lot of other places, too.
