I love the artistic side of the tech world and I am a free speech/privacy advocate. “If the freedom of speech is taken away then dumb and silent we may be led, like sheep to the slaughter.” — George Washington

risedotmoe··on Ask HN: Protonmail Alternatives?
I have problems trusting alternatives like Tutanota and Mailbox. Both of which are in Germany, which has been policing speech for the past 100 years. If a Swiss company will comply with law enforcement, then a German company absolutely will.

There’s also riseup, which I avoid because instead of being at the behest of a Governments politics, you have to deal with theirs instead. I don’t want to be involved or associated with politics outside of my local voting booths (although inevitably unavoidable when you’re talking about free speech and privacy)

I think the solution is to host your own or find another protocol. At the end of the day only you have your best interests in mind.

risedotmoe··on New evidence shows this uranium cube is likely relic of Nazi A-bomb program
The nazis were crazy into the occult. I don’t doubt all sorts of wacko stuff went down because of that.
risedotmoe··on Amazon Staffer Says She Was Fired over Bathroom Breaks for Bowel Issue
Because you are physically able to do the work. You might be able to get it approved in some areas and you might not. Some people with IBS go almost unnoticed while others it can be debilitating. You can't blanket the disorder as a disability because its a case by case basis.
risedotmoe··on Amazon Staffer Says She Was Fired over Bathroom Breaks for Bowel Issue
As someone who’s dealt with this exact situation, someone with a “bowel issue” likely doesn’t take 5 minute poops unless they have diarrhea. 20 minutes is about normal when you’re constipated but have to poop 5 times a day. If you don’t go to the bathroom you’re in pain and unfocused until you poop and until you’re done pooping. What’s spent in those 20 minutes? Dreading people will say exactly what you just said while dealing with your very real but very embarrassing chronic illness. Can’t hold a job down but can’t qualify for disability. Luckily I’ve made strides in my health that I don’t live that hell anymore but not everyone is that lucky.
risedotmoe··on Even my bigoted critics deserve free speech
I feel like if anything should be learned from this era, it’s that censorship does not work.
risedotmoe··on Ask HN: Is it just me or is Twitter pretty good these days?
In my experience all social media, Facebook, Twitter, Reddit, ect. are all incredibly toxic and the most toxic people are backed by toxic moderators.

Nobody is genuine, people say things for upvotes and validation so now everybody has a political agenda. This creates mobs that shout people out of their echo chambers for good think points. Everybody is hopped up on dopamine being cruel to each other and they’re addicted.

Id like to this hackernews is different, otherwise I wouldn’t be here. The voting system isn’t good think bad think here it’s good for discussion/bad for discussion.

risedotmoe··on I'm a Frito-Lay Factory Worker. I Work 12-Hour Days, 7 Days a Week
There is no job that won’t work you for as much as they can. They pay you low enough to where you’re dependent on them paycheck to paycheck. The turnover is high and if you don’t like the conditions they get rid of you. There are a ton of people in line for your job who will put up with worse working conditions so you either lick boots or you aren’t making ends meet this week. The culture at every job is that if you aren’t sweating from 6AM to 6PM you’re “lazy.” Don’t want to work overtime? You either won’t make ends meet or you will be fired. If you don’t make ends meet in America you will be homeless unless you are married with children or can live with your parents.

The only way to remedy this is to go to college or trade school and hope your degree makes you valuable enough that you can bargain for a realistic work/life balance.

risedotmoe··on Ask HN: How to deal with ADHD without meds?
This mindset is awful. You don’t fix a problem by creating 5 more. This mindset creates bad code, kills people, and rots the planet.

I really can’t wrap my mind around someone suggesting a drug addiction (that leads to cancer) to remedy a mental disorder. It’s just plain malicious.

If somebody is opening their mind to help, you have a responsibility as someone of greater knowledge to steer them in the right direction, not take advantage of them.

risedotmoe··on Ask HN: How can we make humanity as a whole smarter?
You can’t. You can’t make anyone do anything. Your best bet is to make information freely available open and transparent. What I don’t understand is, why you are blaming the individual? There is zero incentive for businesses to stop pumping pollutants into a world that will be dead and gone by the time they’re dead. Stop blaming the person who eats meat and drives a car to a factory every day in order to survive. Blame the powers that be that exploit us and the environment solely because they kneel at the altar of profit.

On a final note, I think its wrong to hold the global population accountable. Why should small countries gimp themselves when china cant stop pumping toxins into the air and india cant stop throwing trash into the ocean?

risedotmoe··on Lab-grown food will soon destroy farming – and save the planet (2019)
Morally I find the notion that the Earth is overpopulated to be evil. The problems we see from “overpopulation” is not too many humans, but instead artificial scarcity and a shortage in land.

Consequently I don’t believe the people who say space colonization won’t fix most of our issues.

risedotmoe··on Ask HN: How to deal with ADHD without meds?
Trouble staying awake? Try meth!

Please don’t recommend people develop expensive habits to dangerous addictive chemicals.

risedotmoe··on Ask HN: How to deal with ADHD without meds?
I’m not sure why anyone would need to. Nicotine is a highly addictive poison. It’s horrible for your body. It would sooner make them sick before there’s any supposed “benefit”
risedotmoe··on FragAttacks: new security vulnerabilities that affect wi-fi devices
I've always felt an always listening radio, especially the ones in televisions that try to connect to anything it can, in any device is a big gaping security hole. We've already seen how Bluetooth makes things vulnerable. If you're truly worried about security, go with the cable.
