risedotmoe··on Who needs a romantic partner when it’s friends who help us get through life?
Thinly if at this point at all veiled anti natalist propaganda with the same tired old talking points. These articles talk about how marriage doesn’t last and children are too expensive. Their solutions never involve fixing the divorce rate and lowering the price of childcare but instead abandoning it all entirely for the corporatist dystopia of the future of wage slavery and government controlled populations. “Things will get easier if you just give up and lay on your back”

Instead of asking yourself “how do I live without a family” ask yourself who has to benefit from you not having a family. Here’s a quick tip: it’s not the environment, it all comes down to independence from government and corporate entities. The same governments and corporate entities that try to convince you that you must live like a slave in order to save the environment they themselves are killing.

Family life isn’t for everyone, and while individualism is great, the family unit is our most powerful and important unit and when the family unit suffers, we all suffer.

risedotmoe··on ConcernedApe's Haunted Chocolatier
I’m excited. In my opinion pixel art is timeless and has a charm no other style can compete with. Concernedape makes such a lovely game without being preachy and political. I’m looking forward to another gem.
risedotmoe··on Museum Starts OnlyFans Account After Its TikTok Is Banned for Posting Nudes
I am in full belief onlyfans wasn’t going to ever get rid of porn and it was either a media sensationalized misunderstanding or an outright lie
risedotmoe··on The promise of pills that do nothing
Or, in other words, “how can we sell these idiots sugar pills”
risedotmoe··on Control your data for good with Mozilla Rally
Everything about this from being talked to like an idiot (“interwebs!”) to the fugly corporate art tells me this is about no different than any other corporation that’s hungry for your data. It also tells me who they think is foolish enough to use their product with all the left wing revolutionary imagery. I think “useful idiot” is the term? Services these days that throw around words like “privacy” and “control” seem like a way to profit off of people sick of being taken advantage of by taking advantage of them in a way that makes them feel good.
risedotmoe··on [dead]
Microplastics is such a bleak topic. How are you going to shift the manufacturing world away from plastic of all things?
risedotmoe··on Ruby removed “Participants will be tolerant of opposing views” from its CoC
I can’t believe this “CoC” meme actually propagated.

Project maintainers should assess whether these CoC pushers are actually bringing any value to the project.

These CoC’s feel like a way to remove someone you don’t like from a project without any real productive basis. A weapon used by folks who like to feel self righteous when they “cancel” people who don’t align with their ideologies.

Adults don’t need a “Code of Conduct” to know they should be civil and respectful. If there’s to be a CoC it should only state “get rid of anything that gets in the way of good code” and they should start by booting these CoC nazis who are making their childish fragility’s other peoples problems.

Don’t like something someone said? Talk to them personally before wasting people’s time and resources.

risedotmoe··on Artificial Intelligence completed Beethoven's unfinished Tenth Symphony
Cant wait to read the rest of the Canterbury tales or better yet listen to a brand new 8 track michael jackson album. What’s stopping us from putting out a second bible? Didn’t know we needed “AI” to make things up for us.

I feel like this is a very silly use of “AI” but at least the novelty is interesting and hopefully the data gathered from such a thing can improve machine learning in other ways.

risedotmoe··on Managing harmful vaccine content on YouTube
Political pressure boils down to money in the first place. Youtube cannot exist without advertisers (its actual customers) In this case its money lost not money made. Advertisers with an agenda can basically pressure Youtube into doing whatever they want if they threaten to pull out. In all my years of working in advertising one thing I’ve learned is that advertisers do not care if something they don’t like is contained elsewhere on the website, if it’s there they’ll get their way or leave.
risedotmoe··on Some cannabis firms see ‘disaster’ in federal legalization
Isn’t the lack of a “nutritional label” for weed a product of century long prohibition? The very thing you spend the premium for I see being commonplace post-federal legalization.

I think not before long, minimal packaging gas station reggie will be a thing of the past and picking out quality weed will be like choosing your favorite wine at the grocery store.

risedotmoe··on DEA Still Insists Marijuana Has No ‘Accepted Medical Use'
While some CBD products I do believe to be snake oil, what basis do you have for products containing both CBD and THC to only being effective as a placebo? CBD isn’t truly effective without THC and the THC is what basically turns the snake oil into a legitimately effective product. Additionally, everyone’s sensitivity to marijuana differs and while skin absorption may be “low” that does not mean none and even the effects of a low amount can be felt.
risedotmoe··on Some cannabis firms see ‘disaster’ in federal legalization
The street prices of Marijuana are still better than retail prices. To completely dominate this market, the price per gram of high THC content marijuana needs to go under $10. The walmart of weed is going to trample anybody who can’t compete with that, and right now that’s everybody.
risedotmoe··on Managing harmful vaccine content on YouTube
That’s a whole lot of fluff just to say that they were either paid to do this or advertisers would pull out if they didn’t. It’s all about money and has nothing to do with care for anyone’s wellbeing.
risedotmoe··on A Virginia company has connected mobile phones directly to satellites
Ah so how I thought cell phones worked as a child is now a reality. Neat!

risedotmoe··on What our research says about teen well-being and Instagram
I agree with this.
risedotmoe··on What our research says about teen well-being and Instagram
While I agree that Facebook is lying, how come we want to hold Facebook accountable when it’s the parents who are being negligent? Giving your children privacy is important but that doesn’t mean you have to let them use social media or have no idea who they’re talking to. Talk to any kid on the internet today and they will tell you they encounter pedophiles, groomers, psychological torture, and bullying. Talk to the schools and they tell you all their issues (fights, bullying) arise from Facebook. You can control what apps your children use, technology is getting easier than ever and if you can afford their iphone, you can afford robust parental controls or at least time out of your day.
risedotmoe··on Why women should always do what we think we are not good at
How can you put a number on an ephemeral emotion like confidence but not something more tangible like intelligence? Are anecdotal surveys really an accepted form of research in this kind of field? I’m genuinely curious as it seems that a lot of studies of this nature are generalizing quackery to confirm inherit biases and provide un-individualized cheap solutions.
risedotmoe··on I Built My New Linux Gaming Desktop in 2021 with AMD (CPU+GPU) and GNU Guix
I like to build my linux computers AMD only. No intel IME and nightmarish proprietary nvidia drivers. Smooth Sailing.
risedotmoe··on Reasons to Quit Social Media
I’ve limited my social media to a group chat with friends, an entertainment website with discussion, and an informative website with discussion (HN)

I’m no longer absorbed in sensationalist media and I’m no longer angry about some flavor of the week topic. I don’t see ads anymore and I’ve been a lot happier since. Now I can work towards minimizing other unproductive and unfulfilling screen time.

risedotmoe··on Ask HN: Do you guys even read the linked articles?
I only read the article if I feel I can take away any more information than what I’ve gathered from the discussion or if I plan on discussing myself. Nothing’s worse than being hit with a “did you even read the article” gotcha reddit moment
risedotmoe··on Time to exercise your Raspberry Pi with an alternative browser
To anyone curious, this browser is proprietary. Fortunately it makes no claims of respecting your privacy so at least they aren’t liars.

That being said, I can’t wait to enjoy the open source alternative. Optimized web rendering, especially on the RPi, is a godsend.

risedotmoe··on There is no liberal media bias in which news stories journalists choose to cover
It’s all about money. There is no science without funding. Instead of typing up a storm, here’s a list of suspicions:

* Was this a “commissioned” study with the outcome decided before the data was collected in order to appease a benefactor with an agenda? * Is this a means to cover up liberally biased funding? What about liberally biased science? * Was this designed to give people a quick “Gotcha!” article to cite (Trust the science!) in order to sway public opinion and silence people who argue that there is a liberal bias in media?

Or it could be none of those things and may just be one more paper for the publication count. You just have to consider who has what to gain from a study with poor data and a decisive conclusion on an arguably subjective but very political topic.

risedotmoe··on China’s TikTok Limits Young Users to 40 Minutes a Day
I wonder if restricting video games correlates with a rise in crime. China is most likely different culturally in that regard but I’m curious to see the effects of it.
risedotmoe··on Big Tech is replacing human artists with AI?
Technology has also made it easier to be an artist, tools often automate what took artists countless hours to perfect. This exacerbates the issue making “art” a technical skill and not a creative endeavor. The problem is that no matter how technical it gets, treating art as something that can be artificially constructed leaves things very blatantly soulless. In the modern era everyone can be an artist but only the exceptional will thrive, and art being an endeavor you can thrive on instead of struggle is what’s unique about the times we live in.
risedotmoe··on Big Tech is replacing human artists with AI?
Artists will never be replaced, although looking at the trends of modern graphic design, I doubt a computer can do any worse.
risedotmoe··on There is no liberal media bias in which news stories journalists choose to cover
Is it me or does a website named “science.org” going “there is no liberal media bias” matter of factly just seem... suspicious
risedotmoe··on Mozilla tests Microsoft Bing as the default Firefox search engine
There was a time when id just rawdog firefox and not stress about my privacy or what data was being colected. Then I had to start trimming it down as it became an ever bigger advertisement for other mozilla products, and its data collection ever more concerning. The worst part was the articles presented by pocket on every new tab page. This sounds like a great way to influence thought and show blatant advertisements. Shady shit. Now I use a fork, librewolf, because it’s already set up usable out the box with ublock installed. You’ll have to pry my computer from my cold dead hands before you get me to switch to chromium
risedotmoe··on Firefox Browser: best for a free web
I’ve opted to using librewolf as I prefer its out of the box changes removing everything that sucks about firefox. I refuse to use chrome (unless its for work in that case I use an isolated chromium) I despise the monopoly of the web and I despise google. Personally I think Brave is a honeypot and even if it isn’t, it’s still supporting the monopolized web standard. I hope things get better because we need more choice.
risedotmoe··on As a virologist I’m shocked my work has been hijacked by anti-vaxxers
Well good thing this isn’t reddit. I’m not sure why you would ever use reddit as an example on what good moderation looks like.
