ripper1138··on China’s BYD is overtaking Tesla as the carmaker extraordinaire
I see tons of them on the streets here in China. Lots of taxis are BYD as well.

All banks still buy and sell MBS.
ripper1138··on AMD CEO: The Next Challenge Is Energy Efficiency
You sure? 7900 is probably better value but the 4090 outperforms it by at least 20% in games.

That was a joke my friend

The game is 5 years old.
ripper1138··on $7M lost on Amazon inventory, then bankrupt
AWS isn’t perfect, but it is absolutely the highest “quality” cloud provider money can buy right now.
ripper1138··on Meta lays off 11,000 people
It was obvious that those days were going to end eventually, it was never going to be sustainable. A few people I knew were deciding between job offers at beginning of this year and I straight up said take the most comp, this shit isn’t gonna last forever…
ripper1138··on Toyota CEO talks about why he isn’t all-in on EVs
Not sure where you grew up but garages are standard in much of the US, minus dense urban centers.
ripper1138··on Amazon walking back raises after internal bug miscalculated compensation
Amazon gets and deserves a lot of bad press, but to me it’s no different than any other huge company with lots of blue collar workers. Apple, google, meta, and many more tech companies manufacture hardware products in overseas factories with awful working conditions, but I don’t see people boycotting working for those companies nearly as often as Amazon.
ripper1138··on The $300B Google-Meta advertising duopoly is under attack
Several decades ago we had TV as well. Im not sure yellow pages are better than internet ads.
ripper1138··on The $300B Google-Meta advertising duopoly is under attack
There are plenty of great products that have to advertise because advertising introduces consumers to new products they didn’t know existed.
ripper1138··on Covid: Summary of lab-origin hypothesis
They aren’t mutually exclusive though right? We can say the initial outbreak was from the wet market. Does that mean the virus itself is of 100% natural origin?
ripper1138··on Has tiktok_us been breached?
because it’s not from TikTok servers.
ripper1138··on The World’s Energy Problem Is Far Worse Than We’re Being Told
Their COVID response is mainly about control. for a time it was also about nationalism (look at how many people are dying in the west). At this point it’s control and a little bit of Xi not wanting to change the policy until after he has secured another term.
ripper1138··on The fight against drought in California has a new tool: The restrictor
Totally right about almonds and ‘luxury’ crops. FYI measuring agriculture in general by its GDP isn’t really useful. Stable food supply via agriculture is the foundation of the economy. It allows people to specialize in technology, medicine, etc that generate more GDP. The entire Ag industry is around 5% of GDP in the US and farms account for 0.6% of GDP. That doesn’t mean Ag in general shouldn’t get first priority for water usage.
ripper1138··on Ask HN: Boring but important tech no one is working on?
In a sense they already do with “fulfillment by Amazon”. The only thing missing compared to UPS or FedEx is the retail locations and last mile pick up.
ripper1138··on Life Is Good in America, Even by European Standards
Lots of people love living in SF. Everyone is different.
ripper1138··on Life Is Good in America, Even by European Standards
One would have to be insane to factor in the murder rate when deciding whether or not to live in the US.
ripper1138··on Ask HN: Boring but important tech no one is working on?
Maybe you’d be surprised at how many people at Amazon work on logistics.
ripper1138··on Ask HN: Boring but important tech no one is working on?
If it makes you feel any better, I grew up in the Midwest and there was no shortage of young people going into Ag.
ripper1138··on Ask HN: Boring but important tech no one is working on?
Very strange product. The benefit of traditional rail freight is scale and cost over long distance. The benefit of truck freight is last mile delivery (no need for warehouse storage, can make multiple stops, etc). Their product seems worse than either except that it’s electric. Fortunately, electric trucks are well within reach.

Cool that they are building the tech though, maybe it will get bought out by an actual logistics/freight company that can find a use for it.

ripper1138··on Life Is Good in America, Even by European Standards
San Francisco is not at all representative of the US in general.
ripper1138··on Life Is Good in America, Even by European Standards
Doesn’t Switzerland import all of their oil and gas? Maybe they don’t need as much cause there’s less heavy industry.
ripper1138··on Life Is Good in America, Even by European Standards
True, but there are plenty of homeless people in major European cities. Probably less overall but enough to notice.
ripper1138··on Life Is Good in America, Even by European Standards
Is the macro economic situation in Canada that much different than in the US? For example your point about Chinese production applies to Canada as well.

You’re remembering it wrong. Go look it up. Apple also already does this for photos in iCloud.
ripper1138··on Nocturnal bottleneck
Gotcha. “Arable” has a pretty specific meaning.
