riezebos··on What's Happening to Students?
One of the main points of the top level comments is that students seek connections with people, not content. We don't know yet whether they will seek connections with robots.
riezebos··on European Cloud Computing Platforms
There's also Leafcloud, they put their servers in urban buildings and recycle the waste heat: https://leaf.cloud/
riezebos··on Microsoft deletes official Windows 11 CPU/TPM bypass for unsupported PCs
On the other hand, I recently tried onlyoffice and could not find a way to format a date with the day of the week
riezebos··on Purelymail: Cheap, no-nonsense email
Oh, maybe I didn't mean the same as you. I can create as many email addresses as I want, but they all go to the same inbox. Multiple inboxes would cost more.

In the pricing page it is listed in the "Individual" plan as "+ Extra email addresses for personal and work".

Edit: It is possible to create an extra email address and set it up so that all emails it receives are sent to a different external email address

riezebos··on Purelymail: Cheap, no-nonsense email
As far as I can tell Fastmail comes pretty close, I have as many email addresses as I want on multiple domains and a bunch of routing rules for €4/mo.
riezebos··on Merry Christmas Everyone
Isn't that from 2002?

riezebos··on Why we use our own hardware
As a customer of Fastmail and a fan of your work at FastAI and FastHTML I feel a bit stupid now for not knowing you started Fastmail.

Now I'm wondering how much you'd look like tiangolo if you wore a moustache.

riezebos··on How do you do, fellow web developers? A growing disconnect
With Sveltekit it's quite easy to generate a static site, I've had good experiences with it
riezebos··on Python 3.13.0 Is Released
I agree, it's unreasonable to expect devs to know the whole standard library. The VSCode extension Pylance does give a warning when this happens. I thought linters might also check this. The one I use doesn't, maybe the issue[0] I just created will lead to it being implemented.

riezebos··on Building the same app using various web frameworks
I've used FastAPI, but haven't done a lot with Starlette directly. If you are building a full stack app, I can imagine the integration between FastAPI and Pydantic can make it easier to work with the data that you might want to render in the HTML that you generate using htpy?
riezebos··on Farewell Pandas, and thanks for all the fish
Nice to see, over the past months I've replaces pandas with ibis in all new projects and I am a huge fan!

- Syntax in general feels more fluid than pandas

- Chaining operations with deferred expressions makes code snippets very portable

- Duckdb backend is super fast

- Community is very active, friendly and responsive

I'm trying to promote it to all my peers but it's not a very well known project in my circles. (Unlike Polars which seems to be the subject of 10% of the talks at all Python conferences)

riezebos··on Show HN: I made a all-in-one web app to help me with my freelance admin tasks
As a freelancer, I use Moneybird[0] for this purpose. There is a free tier up to 4 invoices, 10 incoming invoices and 10 bank transactions per month. Most months I fit in the free tier, some months I pay for 1 month of subscription.

Maybe a model like this would work for you as well? The users you are replying to might switch and sometimes pay if they have a busy month.

riezebos··on No way in or out of Burning Man after storm
There is a peer-reviewed method to attribute extreme events to climate change. It was used successfully to attribute some heat waves and floods in Europe this year to climate change: https://ascmo.copernicus.org/articles/6/177/2020/ascmo-6-177...

riezebos··on How Is LLaMa.cpp Possible?
Could this be why people recently say they see more weird results in ChatGPT? Maybe OpenAI is trying out different quantization methods for the GPT4 model(s) to reduce resource usage of ChatGPT.
riezebos··on Deutschlandticket: Germany’s €49 ticket pushes passenger numbers up 25%
There are alternatives though, if you don't need to travel during peak hours it drops to €1440. (https://www.ns.nl/en/nsflex/webshop#/abonnement/dal-vrij)
riezebos··on Bookwyrm – A federated social network for reading books
Consumers often also don't want to be dependent on local data. I would propose a feature to link (& sync) user accounts across multiple servers, that way no one needs to depend on a single server. Power users can set up their own server and use that as a local copy of all their data.
riezebos··on Ask HN: Problems for the next decade?
Here are a few that an organization would be able to work on right now according to the researchers at Charity Entrepeneurship. They might even take less than a decade to solve if things go well:

1. An organization that addresses antimicrobial resistance by advocating for better (pull) funding mechanisms to drive the development and responsible use of new antimicrobials.

2. An advocacy organization that promotes academic guidelines to restrict potentially harmful “dual-use” research.

3. A charity that rolls out dual HIV/syphilis rapid diagnostic tests, penicillin, and training to antenatal clinics, to effectively tackle congenital syphilis at scale in low-and middle-income countries.

4. An organization that distributes Oral Rehydration Solution and zinc co-packages to effectively treat life-threatening diarrhea in under five year olds in low-and middle-income countries.

5. A charity that builds healthcare capacity to provide “Kangaroo Care”, an exceptionally simple and cost-effective treatment, to avert hundreds of thousands of newborn deaths each year in low-and middle-income countries.

6. An organization that aims to reduce stock-outs of contraceptives and other essential medicines by improving the way they are delivered and managed within public health facilities.

riezebos··on Elixir for Humans Who Know Python
Should @bulb_status be @bulb_on in the first line of the example in Templates?

If not, does that mean that any variable that ends with _status gets an automated _on variable linked to it?

riezebos··on DuckDB – An in-process SQL OLAP database management system
Arrow seems to be the common denominator for larger than ram. Polars is completely built on arrow, so the same advantages should apply.

riezebos··on Thonny – Python IDE for beginners
I didn't know about Thonny, but I teach some Python as well. In VSCode, I tell people to add #%% at the start of their script. Then ctrl-enter will run it in a nice interactive window with an interpreter below it for "live" debugging. (The Jupyter notebook integration is also working better than before, not sure what I prefer this days)
riezebos··on OpenAI used Kenyan workers on less than $2 per hour to make ChatGPT less toxic
I think about this every few months since 2016! It's been a bit of a "maybe some time in the future if the stars align" life goal to set up a data consulting company in a country with a lot of poverty. I did a project in Nairobi last year and it seems like there are enough people there that would be interested and have the skill potential. Internet was also quite good in most places. I'm also part of a small data science training company which could be used to teach data skills there. Maybe it's time to think about it more seriously?

riezebos··on The world is run by people no smarter than you
I don't know a lot of them, there are quite many. I believe at least Frans Timmermans, Mohammed Chahim,Diederik Samsom and Bas Eickhout are very capable and have a high opinion of EU politicians.
riezebos··on The good delusion: has effective altruism broken bad?
I'm not very close to the core of EA, so maybe my perspective is not the most accurate, but one thing that I feel sets EA apart from other movements is that EA people generally are happy to disagree and change their mind based on good ideas/arguments/evidence from anyone inside our outside EA. For example:

https://80000hours.org/about/credibility/evaluations/mistake... https://80000hours.org/2020/02/anonymous-answers-flaws-80000...

I expect and hope that people within EA will keep learning from mistakes and changing their views.

riezebos··on The good delusion: has effective altruism broken bad?
If you have an idea which cause to spend on and you have enough savings to live for 6 months in case of problems, EA generally recommends to donate:

riezebos··on The good delusion: has effective altruism broken bad?
> Why not just leave that money with the people who are best positioned to make those decisions for themselves my minimizing wealth inequality instead?

Great idea! Unsurprisingly, pro-choice and pro-life groups are not in the EA top recommended charities. GiveDirectly, which leaves money with the people who are best positioned to make decisions for themselves, is. There might be a lot of authoritarian EAs on forums promoting AI safety, but please don't judge the whole group by a vocal minority.

riezebos··on The world is run by people no smarter than you
When listening to podcasts where EU politicians are interviewed it seems like this is less of a problem there. EU politics have a high impact but a low "fame" aspect. Maybe the people that care about impact and not about fame are higher quality politicians?
