rickyc091··on Apple Silicon M1 Macs do not support eGPUs
This problem still occurs with the latest MBPs even with one 4k monitor. As you mentioned, it's a heat issue. Once I turn on the AC, it starts to pick up speed again.
rickyc091··on Apple unveils M1, its first system-on-a-chip for portable Mac computers
Intel's MacBook Pro 13" is still available for purchase with 32GB upgrade. The M1 is capped at 16GB.

edit: spelling

rickyc091··on Disclosure: Unlimited Chase Ultimate Rewards Points
Passwords weren't limited to 12 chars, but you are correct that they didn't allow special chars for a while.
rickyc091··on NYC’s new digital subway map
The weekend service changes are my favorite thing to decipher.

rickyc091··on ProtonMail CEO calls Apple's forced in-app purchases 'Mafia extortion'
A Plus plan is currently $5/mo through their web. If you purchase an annual plan it's $4/mo ($48).

From what I can see, you can only purchase an annual plan on iOS for $60/mo. They also have fine print that states that Apple takes a 30% fee.

rickyc091··on Look ma, no mouse: Vimium
I'm in love. I was able to navigate to hacker news, use F to click into the comments. Use J to read a bit, then jumped back to the top of the page and used F to highlight the text box to start typing this comment. Pair Programming is about to get a whole lot more interesting.
rickyc091··on Hacking Grindr Accounts with Copy and Paste
If I had to guess, the developer used that to debug the reset token to QA if the flow worked; then it was forgotten and skipped past Code Review since the team just left a LGTM without actually looking at the code OR there were to many changes to the PR.
rickyc091··on Show HN: Keyboard Simulator – virtual keyboard designer
While not the same, you can use this to compare split layouts. https://jhelvy.shinyapps.io/splitkbcompare/
rickyc091··on Facebook Accused of Watching Instagram Users Through Cameras
Not even websites. Desktop apps also have access to your clipboard without any permissions. Can't wait until it becomes more common practice to provide an audit trail of any apps snooping on the clipboard.
rickyc091··on iOS 14 is available today
Surprisingly, both Big Sur and iOS 14 are pretty stable this time around. I haven't had any issues with my dev tools since the first public release.
rickyc091··on Tell HN: My HN app is rejected by Apple for showing Covid-related submissions
Definitely done that at times. It really depends on the luck of the draw with the reviewer.
rickyc091··on Non-obvious remote work techniques
I'm a big fan of https://pragli.com/ for this. Been using this successfully with my team.
rickyc091··on ZSA Moonlander: A next-generation ergonomic keyboard
While I have an ergodox, I completely agree with this. I'm still suffering from some RSI, but following this has helped me tremendously. I also want to add, just as you're suppose to turn away from the monitor every once in a while, make sure you stretch out your hands/arms and return it into the neutral position.

For those looking for a cheap split keyboard, a used microsoft sculpt can be found around $40 on eBay.

rickyc091··on I'm an Unemployed Waitress. Don't Dine Out at All
The reality of NYC dining is more like this.

https://www.6sqft.com/best-outdoor-dining-restaurants-nyc/

The tables are next to each other; in many cases, with just enough room for one person to squeeze through. Plexiglass between each table is a rare luxury.

rickyc091··on Cloudflare was down
Looks like I got another weekend project.
rickyc091··on Cloudflare was down
Same here. Rebooted the router and modem thinking it was me, but my phone was still on wifi then realized it was probably my cloudflare DNS.
rickyc091··on DuckDuckGo browser seemingly sends domains a user visits to DDG servers
Looks like this was an issue posted in 2019. From the looks of it, the code remains unchanged.

rickyc091··on Why we won’t be supporting Sign in with Apple
If you disable your account through Apple's website the email is no longer valid. Does anyone know if they recycle the emails?
rickyc091··on Covid-19 forced Airbnb to rethink its product offerings
Yep, I've been burned by this a few times. Now, I ask them what their internet speeds are and if there are any dead zones in the apartment.
rickyc091··on Too Much Food in the Wrong Places
Agreed. Not sure where people are buying these and masks in the major cities. Are they just buying it off of eBay for a premium?
rickyc091··on Apple acquires Dark Sky
So I exclusively use Dark Sky on my iPhone and watch. They could also be looking at the data and noticing that most people use Dark Sky as opposed to the default weather app.
rickyc091··on How the Zoom macOS installer does its job without you clicking ‘install’
Google requires you to have a Google account. Kids in middle school (ages 12-14) and younger typically don't have an email address. Zoom, on the other hand, lets you join a call without logging in. You can even join straight from the browser if needed without installing anything.
rickyc091··on 50% – 75% of cases of Covid-19 are asymptomatic
It's useless in the sense that you can still contract the virus with a mask. Let's say they are using the surgeon's mask, someone can sneeze and it can get in through the side. The n95 has a better seal so that can prevent it, but what if someone sneezes and it gets into your eye. I would say some protection is better than nothing, but don't assume you will be protected from coronavirus 100%.
rickyc091··on $5000 per violation of price-gouging in CA
"A nearby liquidation firm was selling 2,000 “pandemic packs,” leftovers from a defunct company. Each came with 50 face masks, four small bottles of hand sanitizer and a thermometer. The price was $5 a pack. Mr. Colvin haggled it to $3.50 and bought them all."

"He quickly sold all 2,000 of the 50-packs of masks on eBay, pricing them from $40 to $50 each, and sometimes higher. He declined to disclose his profit on the record but said it was substantial."

$100,000 gross revenue ($50 each), let's say shipping, fees, and price variance were 25%. That's still $75,000 for a $7,000 investment. 10x returns.

rickyc091··on $5000 per violation of price-gouging in CA
I'm noticing with Amazon/eBay shut down people have moved to craigslist and alternative resell markets. I see some listings where people are genuinely trying to help (4oz hand sanitizer, two 2oz bottles, alcohol pads, moist wipes) for $20, but these will probably be quickly bought and resold at a premium.
rickyc091··on Show HN: A front-end visual development tool for React applications
I agree with this. I scrolled through the github page, then I went to the main homepage, scrolled through that and closed the tab. I wanted to see what it actually did before investing more time reading about it and seeing how it works.
rickyc091··on Building a command line tool to design a farm layout in Stardew Valley
For those who have played Harvest Moon, it's basically the same game, but with more layers.
rickyc091··on Ask HN: How do you do home surveillance?
Not sure about motionEye, but the specs for the Raspberry Pi Zero are pretty powerful so I don't see why not.

This is what I used to set up a home surveillance with notification alerts.

https://www.bouvet.no/bouvet-deler/utbrudd/building-a-motion...

====

I just wanted to add, while I have an Arlo Pro as well, I've found the Raspberry Pi Zero solution cheaper and more reliable. The Arlo's camera quality is better, but the software often fails to capture someone walking by. I'm also more skeptical about how safe my videos are on Arlo's servers.

rickyc091··on Show HN: Kasaya – A scripting language and runtime for browser automation
My experience here is different. The majority of manual QA I've worked with do not have experience with automation, nor do they know JavaScript.
rickyc091··on 18-year-old personal website, built with Frontpage and still updated
Agreed. The modern-day version of those would be Scratch (https://scratch.mit.edu/) which kids use to start exploring coding, but it's not the same.
