There's nothing wrong with starting with ChatGPT but the lazy ambulance chaser couldn't be bothered with a quick lookup in Westlaw. That's where things start going wrong.

Employers pay an additional tax on payroll. The withholdings they send to IRS is not considered a tax.

Not on Homepod, the most likely device Siri would be used on.
rickreynoldssf··on Even Apple employees hate Siri and are skeptical of its future, new report says
It doesn't help that Apple doesn't let third party developers use it. The only SDK available for Homepod, is locked behind a bunch of approvals and the only thing it does is allow developers to implement music players. It's very specific to playing music. Not even Podcasts.

Why can't an eCommerce app implement, "Hey Siri, tell Online Store to add Tidepods to my weekly order". ?

What about Audible implementing, "Hey Siri, tell Audible to add Tale of Two Cities to my reading list." ?

There's remnants of a car service interface that never got used or shipped AFAIK. If you ask "Hey Siri, get me an Uber to the train station". It just replies "sorry, I help with rides".

Or maybe even work with other Apple stuff better. I can say "Hey Siri, turn on Television" and that works and then say "Hey Siri, mute television" and it will reply, "There are no televisions to control".

rickreynoldssf··on Half of Black High School Students in the Bay Area Can Barely Read
That's one of the things that would happen when your school board cares more about renaming schools and hiding murals and getting rid of the one school in San Francisco that can feed into an Ivy League school (Lowell).

The same people that supposedly care about minorities and other "disadvantaged" populations are they ones who are dooming them.

Its not like SVB has tons of toxic assets on their balance sheet. They have $13B in balance sheet equity (not marking to market HTM assets). There's $40B in cash and AFS bonds which are marked to market. This can be saved by another entity or a coalition of entities like Sandhill Road. I don't think this is something the government should get involved in any further than they already are. Brex (as far as I know) is offering short term loans to SVB depositors so that should lighten the overall impact; those that get the loans will make payroll. Meanwhile I'm sure there's a few camps frantically running due diligence right now and a white knight could arise by Monday morning to shore up the balance sheet and let the bank reopen. The problem is who/what ever does that needs to ooze with trustability and confidence to keep the remaining depositors from bailing.
rickreynoldssf··on The Demise of Silicon Valley Bank
This isn't going to happen before Monday. Or before the AWS bill is due. $250k isn't going to cover most company's operating cash needs.
rickreynoldssf··on The Demise of Silicon Valley Bank
ADP isn't going to take that paper to cut paychecks. AWS isn't going to want that paper either. The best you can do is take that paper and get a loan with a stupid high interest rate and that's not going to happen quickly.
rickreynoldssf··on The Demise of Silicon Valley Bank
I have to say, Bank of America was a great bank for my startup. We wouldn't have gotten a bridge loan with them or anything like that but for operating cash management there was never an issue.
rickreynoldssf··on The Demise of Silicon Valley Bank
If your company's next payroll is more than $250k you're going to notice. Not even getting into accounts payable for various other suppliers etc.
rickreynoldssf··on The Demise of Silicon Valley Bank
This is bad. This is real bad. ...and I don't think we're going to know the depth of the badness for a while. Think the credit crunch that precipitated the 2008 crash. Though this will be localized to tech startups and it's only the kinds of people who read Hacker News who are going to be affected. A massive wrench has been tossed into the economic machinery of Silicon Valley and other tech hubs.

A bunch of companies now have no or little operating cash and all they're going to have on Monday is $250k each.

rickreynoldssf··on The Demise of Silicon Valley Bank
Do you work for a company that has most of its operating cash in SVB? If so you probably won't see your next paycheck or it will be late. Even if you work for a unicorn there's still a risk because they're not likely to hold more cash than is needed for a few weeks (which is now held up beyond $250k.) The rest of the funds are in bonds or other investments that will take some time to unwind to get cash to meet payroll.

So you decide...

rickreynoldssf··on SVB in talks to sell itself after attempts to raise capital fail
If startups have their funds in SVB, which most do, and they can't wire those funds to ADP or whatever there's no payroll. I know this first hand because when I had a startup we wired upcoming payroll to ADP every two weeks. One week our bank (not SVB) made a mistake and payroll didn't go out. It was a mess but thankfully BofA bent over backwards to fix things.
rickreynoldssf··on SVB in talks to sell itself after attempts to raise capital fail
Well if a startup just closed a $20MM round they'll get back $250,000 after a long unwinding from the FDIC. So that's a pretty big haircut.

I look to Sequoia because, of any VC fund, they are the most likely to be able to pull off a takeover of SVB. I am still gobsmacked that they invested hundreds of millions in a company with no board or CFO (FTX)

rickreynoldssf··on SVB in talks to sell itself after attempts to raise capital fail
I'm feeling like this is early days of a disaster in Silicon Valley. We're at the first or second domino teetering right now. I hope a Sequoia or KPB will step up and save the bank, otherwise a lot of their portfolio investments are about to start missing payrolls.
rickreynoldssf··on A senior engineer's guide to the system design interview
First off, I'm not disparaging the content, I'm sure its good and useful in interviewing at most companies.

...that said. This kind of thing annoys me. You shouldn't have to study for an interview. Either you meet the requirement and have the experience or you don't. Reading books and stuff like this is really a cheat by the person being interviewed. You many have studied enough to "pass the test" but you really don't have a deep usable knowledge of the material and will likely forget much of what was studied.

When I do interviews I make sure the candidate is aware that studying will be a pointless endeavor and if I can tell your answers come from one of the interview prep books I'll end the interview early. My interviews ask questions that will tell me if you REALLY know the subject. For example if JavaScript is a requirement I'll throw this at you

const a = [1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9];

const b = a.filter(x=>1);

if(!!1 && b.some(e=>e>6)){

foo();

}

and ask you to tell me what it does. Its totally weird code and seeing that in actual code is highly unacceptable BUT if you really know JavaScript you will be able to tell me what this does in less than 30 seconds. Immediately if you're going for a Senior position.

I'm known for hiring the best engineers.

rickreynoldssf··on Crypto.com will delist Tether in Canada to comply with Ontario regulator
I don't see much of a need for USDT or any stable coin to be on centralized exchanges for much longer. Its useful as a place to park value on-chain via DEXs in between trades, kind of like Treasuries IRL. Even for Bitcoin its actually easier to trade WBTC on an EVM chain with stable coins. IMO It's silly to hold anything on a central exchange, they should go away for everything but fiat on/off ramps.
