rickdale··on How to win the coding interview
I agree with the other commenters that say thats a bit harsh to completely fail them. I was in my third CS class in college and I left out a semi colon on a test and my teacher said, none of the code would work from here, so the answer is just 100% wrong. Even though the rest was 100% correct. I made the argument that if I was sitting at a computer, that would have been less than a 5 second mistake, or something I would have noticed in the syntax highlight, but he insisted it was a complete fail. I never understood that, but I think it relates back to the days when the professor learned on punch cards and one small error was more costly than today.

Another thing is, when I was learning to program, commenting was something I used to keep things light. Sometimes inside jokes or random bits of code that were terrible that would make me laugh once I had the final solution. In my opinion, unless the assignment was designed to teach proper comments, why not let students be creative with their comments, even if its redundant to you.

rickdale··on How Technology Hijacks People’s Minds
Just looking at your first point, She dispelled rumors left and right: "fracking causes earthquakes!" - actually it's poorly built injection wells and wastewater storage that causes earthquakes

In your mind fracking is separate from building injection wells and wastewater storage? All of your examples are the reasons why fracking is dangerous. Just because people get confused about whats being pumped in, doesn't make them wrong that 'radioactives' are appearing.

I think you have been duped by the power of the p . . .

rickdale··on OxyContin's 12-hour problem
Richard Taite of Cliffside Malibue was on Bill Maher last night and he said that there was a study that recently (within the last month) came out done by I think the FDA that concluded that oxycontin was only to be prescribed to people for 7-12 days maximum. And he said that everyone was on board, but then the prescription drug lobby totally squashed it.

The United States has 5% of the world’s population & consumes 75% of the world’s prescription drugs.[0]

rickdale··on Homeless alone
For a lot of people in that situation they are on social security and thus if they get even a minimum wage job, they lose some of their benefits and have to completely reapply if they some how lose their unstable minimum wage or whatever kind of job.
rickdale··on After ‘The Biggest Loser,’ Their Bodies Fought to Regain Weight
I'll concur with this. I have been practicing one meal/day for almost 3 years now. I think it took my body over a year to really adjust to all the benefits. Now I realize I have some big eating days, some small eating days, I mostly crave healthy stuff and I let the rest take care of itself.
rickdale··on Model 3 Unveiling [video]
Edit - wow that is a better looking car than I expected. You can be as awkward serving as you like if that's the main course!

I mean, I'll reserve judgement until I see some more photos, but when he revealed the car it felt like a huge let down in the room. And I think we all know the car will be a success, but I got the impression that the people in the room were let down a bit by the design. I was surprised Elon didn't showcase the design at all.

rickdale··on Why we should fear a cashless world
There are so many privacy benefits to using cash

I like to use cash a lot too. And the privacy benefits are true sometimes, but more and more places want your information when you purchase anything. I bought a weed wacker the other day and they wanted my address and phone and email. I never say no, but instead reply with, "555 Fake Street" which is obnoxious, but its like you don't need my damn address to sell me lawn equipment. Amazingly, most people dont understand why anyone would give false information to a random business.

rickdale··on Adobe Photoshop and 1700s Manuscripts: A New Approach to Digital Paleography
Photoshop is awesome for stuff like this, and its so simple. I had this picture of my dad sitting on a tank in the middle of the middle east, but you couldn't see him and it was really faded. I googled how to restore it in photoshop, and it took me less than 5 minutes. All the sudden there is this clear detailed face and you can see my dad is there smoking a cigarette as usual. My dad died young almost 15 years ago and restoring that image meant a lot to my uncle as well as the rest of my family. When I first got the picture my mind was thinking, I wish I knew a professional that could restore it. But all you really need is the software and google..
rickdale··on Silicon Valley: Season 3 Tease (HBO)
Thats funny. I remember checking out this site a long time ago. They took away the detail that Erlich also spent some time at Oberlin...
rickdale··on Unsafe Lead Levels in Tap Water Not Limited to Flint
I took a nutrition course given by a former top tennis pro. It was awesome. He recommended a reverse osmosis setup where you add alkalinity to the water. Celtic sea salt, lemon, apple cider vinegar, baking soda, active h2, etc,... not all at once necessarily but thats the protocol I eventually setup at my home.
rickdale··on Chicago Police Hid Mics, Destroyed Dashcams to Block Audio, Records Show
Helping a friend move to another city because he ended a relationship with a cop who made his life a living hell after they broke up.

I was dating this girl a couple of years ago and we were pretty early on, but she wanted to spend the night. And we were cool so it wasn't an awkward thing, but what I figured out as that she didn't necessarily want to stay the night as much as she was afraid to go home at night. Her reasoning, "My mom just broke up with a police officer and they harass us now." Shes from a super small town with a police force with a reputation for having nothing to do, but staying busy. But even when she said it I thought she might be being dramatic. Now I get it. This type of behavior is ridiculously childish and it might not be the norm, but it seems like something someone could stop.

rickdale··on Not just Flint: Poor communities across the country live with extreme polluters
I agree. In one sense, there is no way this was an intended consequence. On the other hand, it would be tough to convince me to drink treated flint river water, and I thought that long before they switched the water. (I'm from the area). My gut feeling is the state, the local, and everyone in between is to blame. You are spot on with the politicizing too, its out of control.
rickdale··on Not just Flint: Poor communities across the country live with extreme polluters
The lines had operated fine with water from a different location that had different pH levels

Actually one of the talking points is that no one will talk about lead levels before they switched the water from Detroit to Flint river. But its not as bad as it is now obviously. . . Does building this 'coat' back up work? How long does that take?

rickdale··on How Target failed in Canada
I think these two paragraphs sum up the article well.

It didn’t take long for Target to figure out the underlying cause of the breakdown: The data contained within the company’s supply chain software, which governs the movement of inventory, was riddled with flaws. At the very start, an untold number of mistakes were made, and the company spent months trying to recover from them. In order to stock products, the company had to enter information about each item into SAP. There could be dozens of fields for a single product. For a single product, such as a blender, there might be fields for the manufacturer, the model, the UPC, the dimensions, the weight, how many can fit into a case for shipping and so on. Typically, this information is retrieved from vendors before Target employees put it into SAP. The system requires correct data to function properly and ensure products move as anticipated.

A team assigned to investigate the problem discovered an astounding number of errors. Product dimensions would be in inches, not centimetres or entered in the wrong order: width by height by length, instead of, say, length by width by height. Sometimes the wrong currency was used. Item descriptions were vague. Important information was missing. There were myriad typos. “You name it, it was wrong,” says a former employee. “It was a disaster.”

rickdale··on Introducing the Facebook Sports Stadium
Thats actually a pretty popular prediction. I remember back in 2008 talking about virtual reality seats at the 50 yard line of the super bowl. It's probably right. I would love to put on VR and play the last set at Wimbledon. I am a dreamer...
rickdale··on The Tennis Racket
I remember back in 2007 when Davydenko got accused of being part of a betting scheme. He said, "Its 2007, there is no mafia in Russia."
rickdale··on About those lava lamps
This is a little off topic, but I was watching Seinfeld last night and Jerry was cleaning up his apt for a girl and he said he needed to clean the bathroom. George said, "No! You think rockstars have clean bathrooms when girls come over?"
rickdale··on Flint, MI: So much lead in children’s blood, state of emergency declared
Michael Moore is great example of Michigans backwardness. Michael Moores high school won't put him in their hall of fame. As if they have had anyone else make any sort of impact as large as his. Recently the Bruins goalie skipped a visit to the white house to meet Obama. He went to the same high school as Moore. The goalie was praised and is in the hall of fame there. It's backwards. There is a lot of unreasonable hate for Michael Moore and I don't even particularly like the guy, but I definitely respect what he has accomplished.
rickdale··on Flint, MI: So much lead in children’s blood, state of emergency declared
I'm glad to see this on HN. Flint is often a forgot about place in the world. I grew up there and now live outside of Flint. My dad was murdered there.

But I always think Flint is prime for opportunity. The people need basic essentials, water, food, shelter. But the infrastructure to build factories is there. Power, train lines, the whole deal. It's really a shame. The sad part is, the people are still hell bent on supporting the companies that destroyed the town. Michigan in general is like this, its why they don't allow Tesla vehicle sales.

Growing up my family owned a junkyard and the Flint river ran behind it. It was disgusting. Some of the guys would wade through it on their way two and from work. It was a shortcut, but you had to be a true animal to go that route.

rickdale··on Plumber sues Ford dealer after truck with logo was used by extremists in Syria
I find this really strange. The first thing dealerships do to cars is peal off them emblems, particularly if they are from another dealership. Pretty crappy overall, but at the end of the day he probably signed something that said he was selling it, "as is".
rickdale··on My car was damaged with FlightCar and they don't care – here's the 3-month story
I agree. It's not that I don't understand that, but you are taking me saying I abuse the car as in I run into stuff and ruin the transmission. In reality I am just saying I drive a little more rough when the car isn't mine. Floor it, slam on break, but never endanger myself of someone else. I don't know, I thought this was the code of the rental car.

I'm going to go with some people are like you, and some people are like me. And the rates reflect the middle and won't change too much. Accidents are random and happen to people that take good care of their cars and people that don't.

rickdale··on My car was damaged with FlightCar and they don't care – here's the 3-month story
Ha, props or down votes for honesty? In all seriousness, I think my statement is only surprising for people not in the automotive industry. Most people I know that rent cars absolutely beat the shit out of them.
rickdale··on My car was damaged with FlightCar and they don't care – here's the 3-month story
Exactly this. A rental car is prime for abuse. Recently my car needed body work after being hit in a parking lot. The bodyshop/dealership gave me a brand new Buick, 1200 miles on it, while they worked on my car. The guy said its still considered a new car up to 6 or 8 thousand miles (I cant remember which..). But all I did to that car was floor it and try to abuse it as much as possible. As shitty as it is to say, its fun to drive a car that you have no responsibility for.
rickdale··on How the 'Quiet Eye' Technique Makes Athletes More Coordinated
Theres a great mental toughness book/concept called Mindset[1], and the concepts are definitely all over the sports world. The book is considered by some to be the Inner Game Of Tennis[2] of today. But one of the concepts in Mindset that they say even the top guys can mess up is that if you are in a negative state of mind, you must give yourself a trigger word, or some sort of positivity before restarting your concentration. In other words, if you are telling yourself, "I am playing like crap. Wah Wah.. Ok, now concentrate!" You are likely to fail. However, if you are able to stop yourself, or correct yourself and say, "run run run." Then start concentrating, you are more likely to succeed. In relation to the article, quiet eyes are only as good as the mindset behind them. (I hope that made some sort of sense). But it basically means you need to have the right mindset before you start concentrating.

The run run run is from an example in the book. I noticed when the Detroit Red Wings were on a losing skid this year players had "skate skate skate" written on the tape of their stick. Also, Roberta Vinci quoted Mindset after taking down Serena Williams at the US Open. And Roger Federer has talked about using a lot of tactics in Mindset.

rickdale··on A Kitchen That Cooks by Itself
Thats awesome. I remember seeing pantelligent a long time ago, but not hearing anything since. I am going to pick one up. You guys do anything with grills? For example, I have the big green egg, and I bought a cast iron grill top for it, but I wish I could get more info from that cast iron part. The current solution is to get another thermometer and put it directly onto the grill rack. Anything like the out there?
rickdale··on The Hard Truth About Boiled Eggs (2014)
I own a hard boil egg maker. Takes less than 20 minutes to make 7 perfect hard boiled eggs. If I am patient enough to wait another 20 minutes after that the eggs peel perfectly and are still warm and delicious.

rickdale··on The Future of Dieting Is Personalized Algorithms Based on Your Gut Bacteria
What worked? Losing weight eating twinkies isn't the healthiest option, I think obviously. I did know they ate only rice actually, and what I would say is to even use that as a point makes my point more clear. You are surprised that those food sources work because inherently you know they aren't the traditional mumbo jumbo. So like my comment says, more to it than weight, thats just a single measurement to go by.
rickdale··on The Future of Dieting Is Personalized Algorithms Based on Your Gut Bacteria
While you can apply calories to those situations, at best calories is an incomplete model. A can of tuna and a can of coke both have 120calories. Yet its obvious that those are going to effect the bodies systems in different ways.

Also, weight is just one measurement. People that eat paleo and other diets often improve all their health numbers like blood pressure and other stuff. So there is a bigger picture to grasp.

rickdale··on The porn industry is in a bind
Thats great. I remember at some point they would only accept users from their direct banner ads, which I could never generate money from. I am sure a lot of people used these affiliate programs, but I rarely ever hear anyone talk about it. Only one other time and it was in a movie and I am not certain it was as similar as we are talking about. Great stuff, thanks for sharing!
