richev··on Ask HN: What do you use for realtime code collaboration?
I worked remotely for a couple of years in a team spread between the UK, Spain, Switzerland and Bulgaria.

We used Skype for voice chat so tried to use its screen sharing feature but found that it was not reliable due to a combination of lag, compression artefacts and occasionally just not working at all.

We found that TeamViewer (https://www.teamviewer.com) was good and reliable. It's free for personal use.

richev··on Twitter now lets anyone request a verified account
I've have happily paid $5; anything to help Twitter monetize without having to rely solely on ad revenue...
richev··on Make the Web Work for Everyone
The layout of that page is borked in IE11 - the text takes up a narrow portion on the left of the browser window.

Not much better in Chrome where the body of the article is not-really-centre-aligned.

In IE the search box is also of insufficient height, meaning that lower portion of the watermark text is not visible.

Maybe the author was being ironic.

richev··on How a team of young people helped rebuild healthcare.gov (2015)
But doesn't the indifference eventually become soul-destroying?
richev··on My best employee quit because I wouldn’t let her go to college graduation
Shame on the manager:

1. For treating the employee like that

2. For building a team in a way that prevented such a request from being accommodated

3. For still thinking that the "problem" here is with the employee who quit

richev··on Windows 10: Microsoft launches intrusive full-screen upgrade reminder
It's not a button, it's a link in a low-contrast colour. Designed not to be easily noticed by the casual user.
richev··on E-mail from Bill (1994)
And a hyphen! :)
richev··on Survey: UK-based Software Engineers, how much do you earn?
Suggest sorting the "What is the value of your annual compensation" results by salary rather than percent.
richev··on The Sad State of Web Development
Dare I say that I do web dev in C# and ASP.NET MVC and think it's great...?

Whenever I think that I need to branch out from the MS stack, articles like this make me think "nah, happy using what I'm using".

richev··on Is it possible to change a culture?
Top -> down? Maybe.

Bottom -> up? Never.

richev··on Ask HN: Best way to book an international flights?
Check out Skyscanner - https://www.skyscanner.net/
richev··on Why Continuing to Work Is Good for a Man’s Health
This certainly applies to me. The workaround is to just let those close to you know that you'll be off the grid for a while but are still ok. Then you don't need to worry about them worrying.
richev··on Why Continuing to Work Is Good for a Man’s Health
> It's a good advice, but not everyone needs to run away from something.

I prefer to think of it as "running towards"...towards something new, interesting and different.

richev··on Lenin was a mushroom
Many years ago I worked as a cashier in a supermarket. There tomatoes had their own classification as "salad".
richev··on Ask HN: What non-technical skills make a senior dev and how to develop them?
Being able to teach others - focussing on the why, as well as the how.
richev··on One-letter programming languages
I'm pretty sure that at that time Google removed "#" characters from search queries, so a search for "C#" was just as fruitless...
richev··on The Biggest Mistake I Ever Made
At the bank I worked for they mandated 10 days consecutive holiday once per year...
richev··on Ask HN: My friend and I cannot agree on our server side stack for our startup
SQL Server scales fine...just ask Stack Exchange. http://nickcraver.com/blog/2013/11/22/what-it-takes-to-run-s...
richev··on Ask HN: How to form deep friendships later in life?
Exactly what I was going to say! I scuba dive, and whenever I've moved to a new city the first thing I do is meet up with the local scuba diving club(s). A sports/activity/social club is a great way to meet like-minded people, but who are from diverse backgrounds and are of various ages.
richev··on Which language has the brightest future for replacing C: D, Go, Rust?
Isn't the verbosity all about job security? ;)

richev··on Evernote cuts 47 employees and shuts down 3 offices
I started out with Evernote, but had issues with multi-device sync (I think that when faced with anything that even remotely resembled a conflict it would just duplicate the note). Actually started using OneNote and have been very happy with it!
richev··on StackNotes
Hmm, the signup page at http://www.stacknotes.io/sign_up uses http, as does the submit action from the signup form.

Trying https://www.stacknotes.io/sign_up results in a certificate error, stating that their cert was issued for *.herokuapp.com. :-(

richev··on Sutro Tower: San Francisco's least appreciated landmark
I'm reminded of the not-quite-as-tall equivalent Crystal Palace transmitter tower in London (which I can see in the distance outside my window)... http://www.thebigtower.com/live/CrystalPalace/Index.htm
richev··on Stuff I've Messed Up While Interviewing
Many years ago an interviewer had me handwriting my solution to a code challenge on a whiteboard. As I scribbled away I had a sense that something was amiss...the ink on the pen didn't smell quite right.

Focussing on the problem at hand, I dutifully filled the whiteboard with my solution.

All was well until I needed to erase the board, only to discover that I had selected a permanent marker rather than a dry wipe one.

Whiteboard ruined.

I did not get the job, but I did learn the importance of checking what type of pen you're using _before_ you start to use it...

richev··on Human Artifacts on the Moon
Plus, in the three days it takes back to the earth from the moon I think I'd have wanted to leave my poo and wee behind!
richev··on What is Gradual Typing
My thoughts precisely...
richev··on Nest: What's in the 4.3 software update
We had a thermostat that was just plain confusing to program, plus it was damned ugly.

I am not sure if the Nest has saved me any money but it looks a lot nicer on the wall than our old thermostat, and really is nice and easy to use!

I still find myself showing it off when friends come to visit...need to stop doing that probably. :-)

richev··on Nest: What's in the 4.3 software update
I replaced one of my smoke detectors with a Protect, planning to replace another. Just really like the look of the product, plus the pathlight feature (it shines a light for you at night if you walk past it) which is a nice plus.
richev··on Microsoft Band
Found a workaround for Windows Phone: In settings, go to region and change Country/Region to United States. Restart phone, go to Store, and you'll see Microsoft Health in there. After installing you can change your regional settings back to your own country and the app is still available on your phone.
richev··on Microsoft Band
"Only available in the US" - unless you arrange for a friend in the States to get one for you ship it to you.

However, it looks like the accompanying Windows Phone Microsoft Health app is not available if you're outside of the US. (not sure if this also applies to the Android and iPhone apps as well)

Workaround anyone?
