richardanaya··on Does mathematics need a philosophy?
Mathematicians always have a philosophy. The only question is whether they know themselves well enough for it to be explicit.
richardanaya··on React Todo app using Automerge 2.0 CRDT
Thank you for the kind words!
richardanaya··on Zig Is Self-Hosted Now, What's Next?
It would be nice to have a public Zig webassembly compiler that anyone could import and use.

Hey all, tech lead from Formant here. Thought you all might enjoy playing with a project my colleagues and I have been working hard on this last month. We’re trying to make it easy for folks to observe and teleop their ROS1 robots on the web :) as a side effect we can now put some cool robots for the world to play with too.
richardanaya··on Wasm-service: Htmx, WebAssembly, Rust, ServiceWorker proof of concept
Saw HTMX on hacker news the other day, thought I’d do this interesting experiment.
richardanaya··on Two philosophers found purpose in the world of work
"To live" is to act to sustain your life and have a life worth living. To live maximally it to not half ass living. Neither being biologically operational while having a life you hate, and also not having a life you enjoy presently at the expense of greater values you have in the future.
richardanaya··on Two philosophers found purpose in the world of work
Comparing Stalinism to Objectivism is an apples to oranges comparison. There's never been a country run on the principles of objectivism. There's many countries that followed Marxist ideology to a logical conclusion and ended up in unsurprising mass death.
richardanaya··on Two philosophers found purpose in the world of work
Indeed, if you asked most people: "do you think your life is important?" "do you think reason is important?" "do you thinking working is important?" most people would say yes, then they turn around and totally dismiss one of the greatest advocates of individual flourishing.
richardanaya··on Two philosophers found purpose in the world of work
Rand doesn't turn to society or god or personal whim to define productivity (all forms of subjectivism directly or indirectly). Rand turns to reality.

Productive values are values that let you sustain your life in it's biological requirements and it's requirements for happiness. (E.g. working as a programmer helps satisfy your need for food/shelter/medicine and also allows you to satisfy your passion for a life worth living in programming ). Ayn Rand shows that the requirements to man's life are objective [external to conscious desire]. There is no subjectivity in your bodies needs for energy (via need for food), there is no subjectivity in the use of reason to accomplish values, and that there is no subjectivity in the requirements for how you reach happiness by the use of your individual judgement to fulfill your life.

Productive actions come in many concretes, but all individuals are unified in that they are actions that satisfy the objective requirements of how individual maximally live.

If productivity were truly subjective, anything could keep us alive and happy. But you cannot eat off playing video games [at least not if you aren't a twitch star ;)], and you cannot find happiness by doing a career you hate.

richardanaya··on Two philosophers found purpose in the world of work
Ayn Rand is a philosopher who talks very directly on how productive action at work (or anywhere) are the morally good.

richardanaya··on ArtFrame: E-paper wireless artwork for your living room
The prices on rapsperry pis that can drive eink are so low the make ArtFrame's prices look way beyond what i could justify.

richardanaya··on Poll: Is the leetcode grind necessary to land a high paying remote job?
No, as i've started to reach staff engineer at my company i've been able to influence some of our hiring policy. I've vowed to make hiring policy that is a joy for our candidates. I find the an extremely simple take home project is enough to see meaningful details to have a conversation about and to be able to wave around to internal stakeholders that we've seen something material of theirs. I explicitly tell folks to please stop working after 2 hours very emphatically.

richardanaya··on TinyVG: A challenger to the throne of vector graphics
I love this Zig art.
richardanaya··on TinyVG: A challenger to the throne of vector graphics
Mesh gradients might make and impressive feature!
richardanaya··on Web Workers API
A little known annoying detail of web workers is that passing large data to them via postMessage is incredibly slow. The browser has to convert your javascript object into some sort of internal binary format and it slows down the thread that's doing the sending.
richardanaya··on Bitcoin Is a Ponzi Scheme
There's no doubt there's money to be made, but fundamentally bitcoin represents a threat to the existing power's ability to control financial markets. I see so many people hoping that they'l give that power up .. and then we have a nation like China go and ban crypto and EU legislating it like crazy.

I'm sure crypto will exist in the future, to me the big question will be how painful will a government make it for you to own crypto.

richardanaya··on We Don't Do Daily Stand-Ups at Supercede
I used to be anti standups until I started taking on some leadership roles.

1) it's great for refocusing everyone on monday first thing after a long weekend of hopefully for getting about work

2) it's much easier to follow up with people as a ritual rather than a 1 on 1 interjection, it depersonalizes info gathering that'd be hard for a manager to acquire any other way. Vocal tonality says a lot sometimes.

3) it's a great way to give casual encouragement and recognition occasionally

That said, I only think standups are needed maybe 3 days a week and 10 minutes max usually.

richardanaya··on Bringing the Unix philosophy to the 21st century (2019)
I was literally just thinking about this a few days ago. I'm super excited by https://www.nushell.sh/ . I think they are hitting on an order of magnitude improvement paradigm of shells that fit very nicely with the theme of this article.
richardanaya··on Looking into Zig
Every time I read about Zig, I feel like I see a nice language that's only an incremental improvement to C mostly in terms of ergonomics. It's hard for me to imagine people giving up C for only incremental gain.
richardanaya··on Looking into Zig
Probably has something to do with Rust being used in embedded and kernel operating systems due to it's high level of memory control and zero runtime capabilities.
richardanaya··on TinyPICO – tiny fully-featured ESP32 board
