riccardomc··on The Free Market Lie: Why Switzerland Has 25 Gbit Internet and America Doesn't
It's nationalism mixed up with marketing.

Nationalism works for domestic markets.

The association with quality manufacturing and precision helps abroad.

Very similar thing happens for "Made in Italy".

riccardomc··on Local Qwen isn't a worse Opus, it's a different tool

riccardomc··on Magnifica Humanitas
Judges and juries are expressions of society and accountable to it. They're not a black box.

Late-stage capitalist tech products left unchecked exploit human problems for profit.

If you cannot see the difference and the flaw in your argument I am afraid you're too far gone.

riccardomc··on Magnifica Humanitas
I wonder how many HN users asked their AI of choice for a quick summary...
riccardomc··on Magnifica Humanitas
No, your reasoning is flawed: a judge or a jury is voted, appointed or selected through a process which is the result of centuries civilization, norms and legislation. As corrupt it might be in some cases, it is expression of mankind.

They are not a black box, they passed rigourous examinations and they stick to principles enshrined in constitutions and laws.

Technology, or better, the productization of it, is instead the result of the interest of very few powerful individuals or corporations and aggressive product market fit iterations.

The bullish discourse around the PMF loop says that this is good because it is better at solving people's problems. But after a few decades it is obvious there's a gigantic risk the process actually exploits people's problems instead of actually solving them.

zero.

It is a manifestation of the commoditization of Cloud Computing Interfaces.

Every provider offers a blob storage, kubernetes clusters, queues and what not.

I'd argue that covers 90% of SaaS needs.

riccardomc··on I moved my digital stack to Europe
It is definitely also about public opinion and it is going to be translated into laws soon enough (i.e. governments mandate data sovereignty).

Recent erratic policies are having a profound effect on perception of US companies.

It has been brewing for a while.

I just came here to say that is ackchyually GNU/Linux.
riccardomc··on Apple says it may stop shipping to the EU
> disrupting the seamless way Apple products work together

this defense argument seems really counter productive as it feels exactly the point of antitrust laws.

Just like disrupting the seamless way internet explorer worked together with Windows was exactly the point.

Also the "Pornography, in my iPhone?!" has meme potential.

Right, down with the Romans, really bad civilization, let's all make fun of them. I am glad they're all dead or turned into stone (I think?), am I right?

Too bad the comment wasn't:

O no, Ludovicus! Captus es! Dixi tibi vestigia tua operire!

riccardomc··on Using Fibonacci numbers to convert from miles to kilometers and vice versa
> just think of a kilometer as slightly more than 3/5ths of a mile.

I can confidently assure you that right about now there are a bunch of Europeans reading your message multiple times, trying to figure out what 3/5ths of a mile even means, asking themselves if this is satire.

riccardomc··on Common side effects of not drinking
Maybe if you do notice a significant difference in your life with or without alcohol then it is a sign of a somewhat problematic relationship with it.

I drink sometimes, most times I don't. The rare times I am asked why I don't drink I say "I don't feel like it" and everybody moves on with their life.

Maybe I'm lucky, but it's hard for me to understand why alcohol consumption or the self-imposed deprivation of it is such an important personality trait for so many.

riccardomc··on Google Chrome has an API accesible only from *.google.com
Probably a 'something.google.com'...

But you could have teams with DNS zone delegation who can.create.anything.like.this.google.com

riccardomc··on A Dramatic Reading: I Will Fucking Piledrive You If You Mention AI Again
> I commissioned a professional voice actor to give a full dramatic reading of that blog post.

The absence of this comment would've been a rebuke to the original article: the oh-so-useful AI would've provided you with a summary of the post.

But that obviously didn't happen.

riccardomc··on Ball: A ball that lives in your dock
I guess the duty of mentioning Neko befell on me this time:

riccardomc··on Letting go of the idea of keeping up
I think this comment encapsulates quite exactly the point of the article: reading as a gamified chore that puts you "well ahead of the crowd" and somehow measures (or influences, even?) how successful, smart, rich, interesting, etc. you are.
riccardomc··on Why are bidets just now getting popular in America?
I am kind of appalled that the article and a lot of people in the comments seem to take the Bidet as an _alternative_ to toilet paper.

That is absolutely not the case in countries like Italy and Portugal. You simply use _both_. Washing yourself with soap and water after you wiped with toilet paper is unquestionably another level of hygiene.

It is also shocking that the article makes very little difference between a toilet seat with water jet and an actual bidet.

In Italy having a bidet is required by law.

riccardomc··on Why are bidets just now getting popular in America?
Complete nonsense. _All_ houses in Italy, even the most humble ones, have a bidet.

It is required by law.

riccardomc··on Tinnitus linked to undetected auditory nerve damage
I am genuinely shocked I can do it...
riccardomc··on They can and will ruin everything you love
I loved Twitter. More than once I've read tweets thinking "this will be on mainstream media in a few days". It felt like the pulse of the world. For any event, I would check Twitter before any news site.

I also had something similar to a community on there for years.

There's no doubt that Twitter used to be the main platform for promotion of solopreneurs and technical content creators.

For me it's almost all gone.

riccardomc··on Intermediate sci knowledge associated with overconfidence and negative attitudes
You claim you're a #2.5 which is intermediate. So according to the article you might very well be an overconfident #1, instead...

You should probably add a "5. don't know" option and check that one...

riccardomc··on Fossil shows mammal sinking teeth into dinosaur
In this specific case the assumption is for the entire Mammalia class rather than just species
riccardomc··on Fossil shows mammal sinking teeth into dinosaur
Yes, there is a reason: “The lack of bite marks on the dinosaur skeleton, the position of the mammal atop the dinosaur, and the grasping and biting actions of the mammal, collectively signal that the mammal was preying on the weakened dinosaur when the two were suddenly entombed by a volcanic debris flow,”
