ricardonunez··on Ask HN: How to deal with fake job applicants?
The market is a horrible shit show, fake applicants and fake openings is the norm. I applied for dozens of job openings with only a 25% response rate and even less for a first interview. Started looking how to spot the fake ones. You need to add to your application a deterrent, like in person interview, meet a team member in person or like somebody else mentioned pick a laptop in person. That was one of the ways I spotted fake openings from real ones, aside from the typical company reposting the same job for months.
ricardonunez··on Massive Attack turns concert into facial recognition surveillance experiment
“Turns concert” clarified it to me.
ricardonunez··on QGIS is a free, open-source, cross platform geographical information system
I use QGIS together with https://mapshaper.org/ converting shapefiles into geojson to use together with D3js on https://createaclickablemap.com/. It is a very useful tool, I am grateful for it. It is just awesome.
ricardonunez··on Ask HN: Is there a temp phone number like temp email?
I use google voice, and in the past other virtual phone numbers but many services don’t fully work. When you request a code, you never receive it and in some cases they tell you they don’t accept the virtual number.
ricardonunez··on Pixel 10 Phones
Same, I only catch up on tech by reading summaries sometimes and for a couple of weeks when I know I need a new device. I’m still the friends and family go to tech person for purchases and support but don’t need to be always up to do, which is great since I’m not interested anymore like when I was young.
ricardonunez··on 95% of Companies See 'Zero Return' on $30B Generative AI Spend
I don’t know how it can confuse because input on mic is relatively straight forward to get. I use fathom and others and they are accurate, better than manual taken. Interesting take, that I don’t memorize 100% on the calls anymore since I rely on note takers, I only remember the major points but when I read the notes, everything comes clear.
ricardonunez··on LibreOffice says Microsoft Office exploits you, offers free ODF migration guide
Also the themes and the themes are not that great and not sharp looking, specially in dark mode. I’m using it out of principle but the design needs an overhaul. I was considering doing the design using some open source icon set but time is limited.
ricardonunez··on Vibe-Coding Yourself into Irrelevance
The website has a random refresh bug makes it hard to read. Firefox on iPhone.

As for the article big tech is investing because they think they can get 100x with a higher profit margin and we are the ones building and training our replacement.

ricardonunez··on Show HN: Defuddle, an HTML-to-Markdown alternative to Readability
I’ll give it a try. I’m not happy with my current setup for markdown to HTML on the wysiwyg editor I’m using, this may provide better results if I go with my own tool bar and editor.
ricardonunez··on Two new PebbleOS watches
You may have an app draining your battery. Was having the same issue with my watch, I deleted a few apps and all of the sudden my watch was better. I can’t tell you what app was because it was just luck. I was creating space on my phone when it happened.
ricardonunez··on Ask HN: How to stop Google from autocorrecting our company name?
Branded searches. You can run a Instagram or TikTok sweepstakes tell people to search for the company name and tell Google to not autocorrect, tweet and share. Give away something to multiple winners to entice people to participate. If you don’t have a big following, pay a creator with a large following to do it.
ricardonunez··on Ask HN: What is the actual cost basis of the stock market?

ricardonunez··on Google begins testing AI-only search results
This is the wrong move. People are starting to get used to their AI results even that many times inaccurate. I get wrong out dated results all the time, when I look for coding and documentation questions I’d the same thing.
ricardonunez··on Show HN: Leaflet.pub – a web app for creating and sharing rich documents
My first thought was a new product from the LeafLetJS people, cool.
ricardonunez··on Zelensky leaves White House after angry meeting
Portugal has its issues and it has some bad places, but overall is the most peaceful place I ever live. I wish one day I could go back and live there, but by the look of it it has become expensive to retire there.
ricardonunez··on macOS Tips and Tricks
The main thing for me was the windows previews, I used to have hyperdock but stopped showing the windows previews. Right now I am trying DockDoor, so far is ok but you need to speed up the fade animation or it has some annoying behavior (reopens preview if pointer gets hover).
ricardonunez··on Migraine is more than a headache – a rethink offers hope
Commenting to save this for post for later. I suffer from migraines regularly. I will try some of the suggestions here.
ricardonunez··on Cc Hot Wife: Gmail exposes contact names
I’m wondering if this was a recent change. Just the other day a client copy his wife as “my love” and I thought it was funny, but in 20+ years of Gmail I have never seeing it happen and I just stumble this post with the same issue.

ricardonunez··on How would you start to learn coding today?
This is great advice. I also have 20+ years and recently started rewritten an old side project, the more I researched to make better choices, the more o dig myself and was feeling hopeless. Started keeping things simple and focus on shipping, finally started seeing progress.
ricardonunez··on Google is making AI in Gmail and Docs free, but raising the price of Workspace
Right now looking for an alternative for the same reason. Even if it cost me more on labor short term. They have been increasing prices regularly and I’m sure it will continue.
ricardonunez··on Why Skyscrapers Became Glass Boxes
The nano texture in my new macbook pro is game changer for these specific situation. It came out a few years back but I only got to replace my laptop recently and it works great. That said, it only works that don't mind the black contrast change.

ricardonunez··on Where can you go in Europe by train in 8h?
About 20 years ago I was in Portugal and remember it was a TGV project that didn't take off. It was supposed to connect to Madrid I believe. I imagine that politics and money created this issue.
ricardonunez··on Tell HN: Meta suspended my FB account because of a bug
It seems that's the case. I never had issues with FB, but this is not the first time I hear Instagram suspended a good account. A friend got suspended because his ex report him, and got suspended, he was an artist and had spent thousands on ads to grow his followers, Instagram didn't care.
