rhodorhoades··on The chat control proposal does not belong in democratic societies
That’s exactly the kind of fallacy these politicians would use to argue against this kind of thing ;)
rhodorhoades··on The Vesuvius Challenge
Sometimes the works we do have from the ancient world seem…. Better? Like meditations is still the only ‘self-help’ book I’ve ever read that has actually made me a better person. I find the stoic philosophy so powerful, and every incarnation of philosophers afterwards are generally… pessimistic or cold and calculating?
rhodorhoades··on The Vesuvius Challenge
The science of archeology is a destructive one. Temples and tombs escavated in the late 1800’s could have largely benefitted from the rigour and advances made in modern archeology. How much information and narrative are lost to time due to their archeological mistakes?

The same applies here. Experimenting with chemistry at all runs the risk of destroying the information forever. During these tests, the artifact must be preserved. If you destroy the artifact but are able to read it, did you really come out ahead?

rhodorhoades··on Crypto exchange Kraken to shut staking service, pay $30M fine in SEC settlement
This may come off as… impractical… but I don’t understand why.

The best way to obtain coins without going through KYC is by using the protocols. The most cost effective is running a filecoin node but there are thousands of ways of getting coins by participating in the ecosystem.

rhodorhoades··on Crypto exchange Kraken to shut staking service, pay $30M fine in SEC settlement
self custody vs. centralized exchange data would be relevant here. Instead of just saying “people don’t do it”. Because people do… and I would venture to say more people do it than keep their coins on a centralized exchange.
rhodorhoades··on LLM discourse needs more nuance
I write around 100-200 emails a day, coordinate across various projects and write a lot of copywrite around the solutions and systems the company develops.

Explain to me how this is ‘bullshit text’. It sounds to me like you are just repeating other criticisms you’ve heard because you don’t like the tool. To me, it would be rude to respond to certain emails in a way that I can tell chatGPT. I can give chat GPT a very basic framework and it will respond in a way that is not overly laconic.

Writing certain copywrite towards a requirement or proposal is also not “bullshit”. Chat got is useful for sketching out a rough outline and it’s easier to go and edit it to your liking then writing it from scratch.

I reject your definition of emails, copywrite and proposals as bullshit. They are necessary, and if I can use chat gpt to help me save time by proofreading, generating outlines, managing tone and generally making my communication more streamlined and shorter, how could you call all of that “bullshit text”.

rhodorhoades··on Crypto exchange Kraken to shut staking service, pay $30M fine in SEC settlement
Is it tho? A MetaMask wallet staking directly with the protocols/ yield aggregators is easier than creating a kraken account and doing KYC verification.
rhodorhoades··on LLM discourse needs more nuance
Try some prompt engineering courses. It’ll change your perception. Some of my prompts are like 1200 words just to set context. But I use it for email, marketing outreach, blogs, you name it. It’s drastically increased my productivity as a solo consultant.
rhodorhoades··on Evidence that the evolution of mammals began in the Southern Hemisphere
Well… the whole ‘ancient apocalypse theory’ might be discredited, but the sites they visit date back extremely far into our ancient history. It also shows that pockets of architectural knowledge rapidly advanced and then receded all across the known world. One thing is for sure, the human story is far from a ladder, with periods of around 1000 years of advancements and then everything collapses for a couple generations.

I think it goes back to the OP’s original point… there are some things we cannot ever know for sure but they are fun to learn and talk about.

rhodorhoades··on Drone photos reveal an early Mesopotamian city made of marsh islands
This is untrue. You aren’t thinking about the effects of sediment, usage, and erosion. When you build a dam and allow the riverbeds to dry, it changes the entire water table of the region.
rhodorhoades··on Liz Truss resigns as UK prime minister
If you don’t have any intentions of defending your beliefs, why do you put them out there?

It’s like throwing a punch with no intention of getting in a fight. You’re just bound to get your ass kicked.

Not only is the UK not a republic but Republicanism isn’t about needing a grown up, it’s about time. Understanding the implications and reading through a 150 page proposal on the bill is not possible for the majority of the population.

rhodorhoades··on Liz Truss resigns as UK prime minister
Why does it feel like in western culture it’s becoming more and more treasonous/ taboo to suggest things of this nature?

If you suggested that every take their money out of banks as a mass movement l, would that be treason?

rhodorhoades··on Findings show that the Vikings' self-image was influenced by Ancient Rome
Yeah, but at that point they were a Greek speaking, Christian monarchy that had been actively hostile to western Rome for a century.

When did Rome die? When the capital was moved from Rome.

rhodorhoades··on Tesla has lost more market cap in 30 days than any other company in history

rhodorhoades··on Alaska snow crab season canceled after disappearance of an estimated 1B crabs
But maybe just the pointy, immobile part of the crab claw would need to be removed. That usually doesn’t have too much meat.
rhodorhoades··on More than half of all Bitcoin trades are fake
Yeah - it’s rather annoying how they lump in ‘non-economic activity’ with ‘wash-trading’. HFT is totally legitimate way of doing business, the liquidity is provides ‘may’ be good for markets and shouldn’t be lumped in with wash trading as “fraudulent” without any real analysis to back it up.
rhodorhoades··on The Curious Design of Skateboard Trucks
I skate risers with tight trucks. As parent suggested, it helps with stairs and drops.
rhodorhoades··on In the end, climate change is the only story that matters
Wtf?… this is the most alarming statistic I’ve ever heard. Why is their estrogen in our drinking water, why does birth control put estrogen in our drinking water and where the fuck is the other 99% coming from?
rhodorhoades··on Ask HN: I love to be alone. But this loneliness is killing me
I would recommend traveling. Maybe in South America. Travel aligns your priority’s if you stay in hostels and explore. You’ll learn necessities, privilege, love and hate. It’ll get you out of your box of loneliness.
rhodorhoades··on US Military Annoyed When Facebook and Twitter Removed Its Psyop Bots
Yeah, there’s been a lot of ‘counter-point’ logic in some of the hacker news comments that seem…. Artificial. Some of the scale of the disagreements seems like something a simple chat bot could take, turn the connotation around and repost in ‘their own words’.

Make the programmers pissed off, disparage the company’s they work for and you might rob the US of its much coveted verve.

rhodorhoades··on Tether ordered to produce documents showing backing of USDT [pdf]
Tether is hard coded to bounce between their float. Tether made a mega fuck ton of money when that float widened and so did all the hft firms. Most of the tether is held by insiders and they can utilize that tether to obtain 100x leverage. You can literally see on chain when the yield widened back in may 11th, that sythetix and other leverage platforms got a huuuge influx of USDT and they used that USDT to purchase more USDT on the low… and guess what? Made a killing.

They are too powerful with too much money and too much centralized collusion to fail on their own. And the US policy still can’t define crypto, let alone police it properly. Only the full might of the US judicial system will make tether fail.

rhodorhoades··on Tether ordered to produce documents showing backing of USDT [pdf]
Yeah - GAAP definitely doesn’t work with crypto. Is eth an asset, currency, or inventory? If I’m a big crypto firm and I regularly use eth for chain fees, do I calculate that as a sale of an asset? If my eth has appreciated since it’s purchase, did I just make a sale?

When I’m adding liquidity to a common pair that I utilize a lot and get a divergent loss between the two assets, should that be impairment at the time of the transaction or only when all the coins are converted to USD?

I can go on and on and on about the impossibility to comply with tax regulations and crypto. I’m an avid crypto user, I like making bots for all the games, I think NFTs are cool and always like meeting the programmers turned artists, I participate in 10+ exchanges and 50+ liquidity pools across the map.

When it came time to do my taxes this last year, I had to hire a crypto specific tax person. His advice was that every time I transfer crypto off an exchange, it is ‘sold’ for that price and I have to pay taxes on the minuscule difference between my purchase price and the 10 seconds it take me to transfer into the meta verse. It’s literally impossible to do it otherwise.

rhodorhoades··on Tether ordered to produce documents showing backing of USDT [pdf]
I can’t tell if this is a joke about financial engineering tether slowing lowering its backing publicly? Maybe a double entendre?

Tether was originally 100% ‘backed’ and after more and more pressure, they literally did that exact same thing with the percent that was backed in USD.

“It’s 100%. Okay, it’s absolutely backed by 99% usd. JK, 96! I think they are at like 74% now publicly backed by USD?

rhodorhoades··on SIM swapper abducted, beaten, held for ransom
I’ve been to over 40 countries and I can tell you this is true. The people that have the least are some of the most caring people, who will insist on feeding you even when they don’t have much food to give.

It is economic disparity that creates violence. Only when villas are in reach of a small poor town do you start to get petty muggings, scams and murders.

rhodorhoades··on Blockchains by number of nodes/validators
Completely off topic and not really relevant to your comment buuutttt Banana coin’s ‘POW’ is based off protein folding and contributing to medical research. It’s a joke and you aren’t enabling consensus but you are getting banana emissions for ‘noble causes’, which I found was fun and regularly run it when I go to sleep.

Do you have any good memoirs you’d recommend?

I’ve always found personal accounts and memoirs to be the best kind of writing. You get to read beneath the surface between the person they were, the person they wanted to be and the worldly circumstances they found themselves in.

There are major roadblocks being put in place by powerful entities. I have to use VPNs, different distribution/ platforms, .onions, NATS, and other bits of technology to get around those roadblocks and use the technology as I see fit.

rhodorhoades··on Covid: Summary of lab-origin hypothesis
What was showed by the government is that we don’t have transparency and honesty. The head of the CDC essentially said “masks don’t work”, then came out and said “ just kidding, they work but we needed to lie to you so you wouldn’t panic buy all the masks. Go ahead and go panic buy all the masks now”

Americans don’t like to be talked at, they like to be talked to. As a country, we want all the information but we want the ability to choose what to do with that information.

rhodorhoades··on Covid: Summary of lab-origin hypothesis
I don’t know if it was initial propaganda or what, but literally right before COVID became a thing, there’s was a couple news articles that popped up on HN saying there has been a lab leak from wuhan and the government is locking down the area.

Three weeks later there’s this giant pandemic. I remember telling my wife about it in December before Christmas but now I can’t find any articles dating back to that time.

My point is not that the lab leak is true, but in this modern world is it literally impossible to know what’s true and what’s propaganda.
