rhodorhoades··on Design and evaluation of IPFS: a storage layer for the decentralized web
Interesting. Can you explain how that’s different than the normal internet/ hosting solutions currently available?
rhodorhoades··on Blockchains by number of nodes/validators
Because crypto is banned on every meaningful platform. I can’t use my phone to mine, I can’t use defi on IOS or android. In the US I can’t access shorting on CEX, am not allowed to use tornado cash to gain privacy, I am platform locked everywhere I go and yet crypto hangs on the fringe.

Crypto is heavily censored in the US from multiple directions.

rhodorhoades··on To Save the Deep Ocean, We Should Mine the Moon
But why would you ever bring material back to earth that was mined on the moon? Why not just launch it in a earth or cislunar orbit. It’s more valuable there for use in space industry.

The moon has a lower delta v to orbit than earth does.

rhodorhoades··on The toll of dating app burnout
Coming from a guy who probably has “Forbes 30 under 30” in his tinder bio.
rhodorhoades··on Tell HN: Meetup.com is offering abandoned meetups to anyone willing to pay
Intentionally dissolving a community seems pointless. If a community wants to be dissolved people just… stop.
rhodorhoades··on Stable Diffusion is a big deal
It seems like you haven’t used CoPilot. Yeah, some of the harder bits I may have to code myself but the amount of boilerplate it reduces is incredibly liberating.
rhodorhoades··on Elon Musk sells $6.9B worth of Tesla stock
In the future, if an acquisition gets offered at some x price and the stock rallies to almost x, then the delta (smart move) is to short, not buy. If you buy, the most you are going to get is that 5% bump. If you short, you can make 100%.
rhodorhoades··on AppLovin bids $17.5B to acquire Unity
It benefits the app creator, and whoever is behind the ad serving to the detriment of the person doing the advertising. They get charged each time someone clicks that add.
rhodorhoades··on Artificial synapses 10k times faster than real thing
Read on intelligence by jeff Hawkins. He uses that exact same simile but in the opposite context.
rhodorhoades··on Tornado cash takedown and its repercussions
You initially say it’s not any different than Popcorn time, then go onto explain all the reasons why it’s completely different than popcorn time.
rhodorhoades··on Nomad drained of $150m due to a coding mistake
Even if you can prove ‘robbery’ in the courts, the courts have no ability to follow up on their threats like they would in the normal financial system. That’s my point.
rhodorhoades··on Nomad drained of $150m due to a coding mistake
Hahahaha. That meme is hilarious. And very true.

But again, it ignores my last point completely. Good luck trying to find the person behind the wallet.

rhodorhoades··on Wikipedia has blocked editing ‘recession’ as people change definition
Worldwide inflation numbers[1], general animosity among world powers[2], wars in trade and land , global debts rising above GDP everywhere, does not bode well for social peace. There will be revolutions worldwide if this trend continues and if history rhymes.

1. Middle East, SE Asia, and South America all have inflation above 50%.

2. Russia vs west. China vs. the US (Taiwan) Turkey vs. Iran (Syria, Armenia) Venezuela vs. itself

rhodorhoades··on Tech Compensation in Europe
Swedens and Norways top political parties have ‘social’ in their name. Also, I would say socialism is more of a sliding scale based on ‘how big’ the role of government is. It depends on what level of the ‘social programs’ fall under the perview of the government vs. private industry.

I would say Sweden and Denmark are more ‘socialist leaning’ compared to other democratic republics of the world.

rhodorhoades··on Riding transit takes almost twice as long as driving (2017)
But then you might as well go for the ‘Teslas in tunnels’ approach like the boring company.
rhodorhoades··on What happens when society collapses (2021)
These articles always go for the ‘world ending scenario’ and use false information like “limited resources” to perpetuate that.

But if you take a step back and instead focus on how fragile the economy is, you instead can reach the same conclusions without the lie in the sky.

Imagine if some nefarious nation/ group / person decides they are going to blow up all the chip fabs? Pretty hard considering there are a few hundred of them, but even a select few could send the world into a huge recession for a few years.

Imagine if someone destroyed a group of grid transformers? It would take at least 6 months to get that regions power back on.

What if some American president utilized the military to its true power? This would destroy most of the world’s manufacturing capabilities.

These scenarios are much more likely than ‘financial collapse’ but will definitely lead to it.

rhodorhoades··on What happens when society collapses (2021)
The fact that you say it is second hand knowledge of a banker friend makes it anecdotal. Which by definition is unprovable and is why it is not considered ‘evidence’. You also include another fallacy which is a claim to authority ‘banker friend’. What makes a modern day banker suitable to make such claims unless they are a econ historian? Common sense finally rules out your argument because why would I loan a friend money at zero interest if I can deploy that capital with interest. I’m sure it ‘happened’ but you can assume based on human interest that this was far from the norm. One thing you can generally follow as a principal is where there are incentives, human behavior will trend towards those incentives and away from disincentives.
rhodorhoades··on We haven’t killed 90% of all plankton
Yeah, I found it really fishy that they didn’t counter with their data. They weren’t like yeah, it’s only 40%. They just said we’ve collected more data, so they are wrong.
rhodorhoades··on I watched a friend of mine pump a shitcoin on Binance by buying billboards
At the bottom of that tulip mania article, investooedia is offering $1M crypto giveaway. We definitely live in a simulation.
rhodorhoades··on Governor Newsom announces California will make its own insulin
UC Berkeley, UC San Diego, UC Los Angeles are some of the best engineering schools on the planet.
rhodorhoades··on 3D-Printed Homes for Sale in Austin
Party pooping is what HN is for and why I love it so much. It makes you grounds these pie in the sky ideas in their benefits.

One thing I would say is that the price of concrete, lumber, other materials used and labor have been skyrocketing. At some point in the future, 3d printing may be utilized to great cost savings.

rhodorhoades··on A Google engineer who thinks the company’s AI has come to life
Literally all of your points exist in the current age.

In 2022, you have to assume that some percentage of the comments are bits pushing a certain agenda.

Bots run out financial and crypto ecosystems. HFT account for the majority of trading & there are stories of trading bots built on the blockchain where the keys have been lost and yet they keep trading and building wealth.

Every time I call a big company, I talk to a bit first.

They are in our factories, our homes, and control our digital life’s. “Training” these bots sometimes produce unintended externalities. How is this different than a normal human? They interact with data in the open ecosystem and develops some bias or agenda.

rhodorhoades··on I will no longer engage in philosophical discussions about conscious AI
You seem to be talking in multiple time frames at once and also anthropomorphizing AI.

I can think of multiple things current AI does that demonstrate agency & reason. Even clay has emergent phenomenons that have agency “keep water out”, reason “contract and solidify if certain ambient things are occurring”.

The problem with AI, is we don’t know what we are talking about. We can’t even point out when humans gained consciousness let alone when AI will. It will and always has been a backwards pointing measure.

rhodorhoades··on Former U.S. congressman, operative pleads guilty to election fraud charges
>The Brennan Center summarized almost 200 errors in election machines from 2002 to 2008, many of which happened repeatedly in different jurisdictions, which had no clearinghouse to learn from each other.

The analysis done from Brennan gives me opposite of hope if you read everything published by them.
