rhipitr··on What's Earth's dominant species by mass?
Reminds me of the Simpson’s episode where Lisa grows a society.
rhipitr··on AnyPS5: Port PS5 binaries to PC without emulation (87% system libraries mapped)
Feel like eventually ai will get so good people will just autogenerate games just for themselves. Same for movies/shows/etc.
rhipitr··on Analyzing Frontier Model Progress with My Favourite Game: Prince of Persia
Off tangent but the latest prince of Persia game is really fun
rhipitr··on Oracle cites 'force majeure' to shield itself on controversial data center
I’ve been on some teams where some SQL devs can do some non intuitive things with SQL (particularly some of the enterprise features from Oracle). Not saying they were the right decisions but I do think some processes get knitted to these enterprise features and it’s painful to walk back later
rhipitr··on Pentagon says overreliance on AI contributed to missile strike on Iran school
I think some of the current leaders believe the US would’ve won Vietnam and Iraq wars if tv/media coverage of it hadn’t existed or been more like ww2. So, I think they were honestly ok with collateral damage.
rhipitr··on Oracle’s 6am layoff emails hit staff amid new wave of cuts
Interesting that the immediate reply to that comment is about how ASML code is equally shitty
rhipitr··on Research acceleration: The view inside OpenAI
“We found the face huggers and now we think we can control them.”

I always wonder if any true AGI and ASI for that matter can be controlled at all by humans. It seems like we are hoping for something that winds up being on the human spectrum of “good”

rhipitr··on VMware migration reduces Tottenham Hotspur's licensing fees by 85 percent
85% reduction in VMware fees replaced by some other fees from something else? Or just an overall 85% reduction in cost?
rhipitr··on Changes at Google DeepMind: Demis Hassabis from CEO to Chair, Jeff Dean departs
Isn’t alphabet an investor in their new endeavor?
rhipitr··on They Stole Your Attention
Current attention behavior with all of our devices reminds me of the The Box machine in Batman Forever, but way worse as it is perniciously unobvious to most.
rhipitr··on NotebookLM is now Gemini Notebook
Any people with insight on why this happens? From my corporate experience this generally happens when two teams are working on a similar thing, they complain about turf to leadership, and leadership either makes them consolidate efforts or chooses a winner. Is that what happens at Google a lot? Or do they just constantly tweak things to the point they cease to live or be used?
rhipitr··on Demis Hassabis has a plan to harness AI safely
I do wonder what type of AI some of these leaders expect to be able to harness. If you create something that is true AI, won’t it be smarter than you to a level you cannot fathom. I was thinking of this idea/though-experiment (which I know is ridiculous) of what if dogs created humans thinking they could control them, and then just wound up being pets because their survival now depended on that new hierarchy that previously didn’t exist.

Seems to be a lot of hubris with some AI thought leaders thinking control will remain with them and be absolute.

rhipitr··on GLM 5.2 and the coming AI margin collapse
Switching out an LLM? What do you mean by this? Sure some models can run locally but in a company with lots do people they might not be willing to spend to self host a larger model that requires beefier hardware to host, plus all the complexity to scale that out to a bit internal user-base
rhipitr··on Blogging can just be stating the obvious
Obvious != known
rhipitr··on The worthlessness of Vitamin D is mildly exaggerated
Have a loved one that has extremely low vitamin D issues. Takes ergocalciferol from time to time and it is pretty useful in my opinion.
rhipitr··on Zero-Touch OAuth for MCP
Isn’t tool drift/version also a benefit? Especially in scenarios where the use must be standardized and up to date?
rhipitr··on The AirPods Effect
One thing I find concerning is the amount of people I see driving these days with AirPods. Don’t think they can hear emergency sirens or honks very well that way. I think it it’s even illegal in some locations. I assume they do this in older cars without a way to connect their phone or just like immersive sound.
rhipitr··on Abandoned and Little-Known Airfields
I got diverted to Roswell once and it was very cool flying in and seeing the airplane graveyard there. Not sure it’s little known but it was to me.
rhipitr··on Noam Shazeer Joins OpenAI
At this point is it even pay that’s tempting or is it more about what they get to do? I would assume Google could easily pay them what openAI can, unless as an older company it’s harder for Google to match something really out there
rhipitr··on Only 16 Percent of Americans Think AI Will Have a Positive Impact on Society
I think also, just seeing non-technical friends and family interact with it, there’s a lot of massaging you have to do right now to get it to work that just goes over their heads. Until they gets pushed behind an abstraction layer I see adoption crawling at a certain point.
rhipitr··on Has AI already killed self-help nonfiction books?
I think AI will accelerate this, but I think YouTube, TikTok, and podcasts have splintered the market so much there’s not as much space for mega self-help stars anymore, just a lot of middle class ones.
rhipitr··on Feds freaked over Fable 5 after 'fix this code', not jailbreak, say researchers
Isn’t the inverse of this “hack” really difficult to bypass still? They have the model some code they knew had certain security flaws and it fixed them with the right prompt. It seems this type of jailbreak requires that you already know a desired end state, rather than relying on the model to do the heavy creative lift work. Perhaps I’m just not being imaginative enough on the prompt side here though.
rhipitr··on US Government directive to suspend access to Fable 5 and Mythos 5
Depending on quantization I figure they need at least a p4 and likely a p5 EC2 (or similar instance in another provider) for a model with that many parameters. Maybe they are hosting on bare metal but I imagine not. Those instance types (assuming not using spot) are quite expensive to run.
rhipitr··on Ask HN: What are tools you have made for yourself since the advent of AI?
A weight lifting app. I’ve paid for, and used, others over the years, but I always wanted to customize them in some way just for me. So, I just decided to create one the other day (used antigravity CLI) and I’m hosting it on Vercel as a PWA. I’m enjoying it so far and see a lot of potential with making hyper-personal software moving forward.
rhipitr··on The super-rich ‘preppers’ planning to save themselves
I’ve always wondered would most of us, used to modern conveniences, even last very long mentally in an apocalyptic situation (or even want to)?
rhipitr··on The super-rich ‘preppers’ planning to save themselves
What if the prepper is on vacation when the apocalypse comes and they are nowhere near their stash and safe house?
