rhamzeh··on Show HN: Topaz: open-source authorization combining the best of OPA and Zanzibar
Love the growing number of OSS Zanzibar implementations, and congrats to the Aserto team for launching Topaz!

Ory Keto's intro video @ SV IAM User Group [0] is worth a watch.

rhamzeh··on Canonical Launches Ubuntu Pro
My experience back then (10~12 years ago) with Arch was issues upgrading in general, granted I was using it wrong, but in one instance I remember the networking daemon got upgraded, but there was no uodates for something core that depended on it which lead to a non-functioning network until I managed to copy files over USB and revert.
rhamzeh··on Does cashless society discriminate against the poor and elderly? (2019)
I like this tidbit!

I think it is apt and we are collectively ignoring how dangerous new technology and technological trends are or can be because we can use them without understanding anything about them (I'd argue even their creators understand little about them).

rhamzeh··on Does cashless society discriminate against the poor and elderly? (2019)
> Is newer better?

No, but we have to fill up those land fills and line those pockets somehow!

rhamzeh··on Canonical Launches Ubuntu Pro
I personally chose Fedora Silverblue (that has been amazing!) after after all those snaps.

I've never had an easier and more seamless time upgrading across major versions, and that includes my previous experience with Ubuntu, Arch, Mac, Android, Windows and Debian.

Luckily for me, I was already into podman and flatpak on Ubuntu, so swiching wasn't hard beyond forgetting that I can't do apt anymore every once in a while.

Debian would have been my choice bad silverblue not worked worked for me.

rhamzeh··on Help Improve Gnome
I faced the same dilemma. I despise snap. I wanted something Debian based too, but I ended up biting the bullet and crossing over to Fedora Silverblue - it's different than the normal Fedora builds, in it's intentional design for Flatpaks + Podman being the core and minimizing system wide installations.

It worked really well for me, and somehow even better system support* than I had with Ubuntu, something I didn't think was possible.

* Better system support: as in 0 issues sleeping/waking from sleep, reading from fingerprint reader, connecting to bluetooth, switching sound output, connecting controllers, and switching between different multi monitor setups. I mean Ubuntu was great, miles better than my work provided Macbook Pro (that is a study in frustration), but the Fedora Silverblue installation ups the ante, pure gnome is also slightly better than Ubuntu's tweaks.

rhamzeh··on Signal: You were the chosen one [video]
> The ability to forward more than one photo at a time

This is already possible (on Android at least), and has been for a long while.

Long press on one, press "select" which allows you to select other photos, select the photos you like, and then press forward.

One issue with that is that if multiple photos are grouped together, you have to select the whole group, but you can definitely forward multiple photos in one go.

rhamzeh··on Add-on support in new Firefox for Android (2021)
That's a weird take, considering Fennec is FF on Android, just with some minor config changes.

Your statement is akin to saying: "Firefox on Debian is my solution to Mozilla abandoning FF on desktop"

If FF on Android _were_ abandoned, then so would Fennec.

I use Fennec, but because I know that it the well-supported, actively developed Firefox on Android, but available on F-Droid.

which sadly Mozilla doesn't provide or allow F-Droid maintainers to publish it as "Firefox"

rhamzeh··on Ask HN: What’s a good laptop for software development at around $2k?
True, but it is not a tool that works for everyone.

In my case, I consider the Mac one of the cons of working at my current place of work. My days are filled with minor hassles that I could really do without. Doing simple things takes longer, and I have to deal with random freezes, slowdowns and even crashes that I did not have to deal with when using my own laptop for similar needs over the past couple of years (mostly dev related with minor content editing).

So again, it is a tool, but it is not the best tool for the job for every person, especially developers.

rhamzeh··on Firefox now only available via snap on Ubuntu
I'd rather a package report as `does-not-exist` and suggest I install it from snap over it installing it silently from snap without my input
rhamzeh··on Firefox now only available via snap on Ubuntu
I love flatpak. I consider snap to be just bloatware I have to wipe of my system on installation.

Hopefully soon I'll move off Ubuntu to greener pastures. Fedora Silverlight seems particularly intriguing.

rhamzeh··on Firefox now only available via snap on Ubuntu
The problem isn't Mozilla/Firefox in this case. It is Canonical/Ubuntu.

Firefox on most other distro (debian based or otherwise) can be installed with the proper system package manager.

Additionally Mozilla offers a flatpak version of Firefox which I strongly prefer over snap.

It's just Canonical's disdain to anything not homegrown that's behind this move.

rhamzeh··on Mealie – a self-hosted recipe manager and meal planner with a RestAPI back end
Upvoting just for having proper Toum at the top of the recents :)

Kudos for knowing what Keshik is too!

Also thanks for sharing - there are a bunch of cool recipes there.

rhamzeh··on Proposed Australian law allows secret ministerial demands to install spyware
I chose Migadu.

You might want ProtonMail or Tutanota if you wish, but having it accessible over my Mobile app of choice was a blocker for me.

Some of the extra credits that made me choose Migadu:

* Their site works without JavaScript enabled

* Very simple and lightweight

* Strong support for standards and portability

* Open Source (as in FOSS) Stack, including their UI. https://git.sr.ht/~migadu/

* They're not after investors or scaling: https://www.migadu.com/procon/

rhamzeh··on Proposed Australian law allows secret ministerial demands to install spyware
The previous iteration of this was a disqualifier for using FastMail when I was migrating away from GSuite.

I wonder why people would accept to use AU-based services with all these shenanigans in place.

rhamzeh··on Wire is now on F-Droid
Android 12 has a mechanism to allow an app that installed an application to update it in the background, but the client needs to be updated to support it.

F-Droid hasn't yet, see issue here [1] - some of the other F-Droid clients, like Droid-ify have [2].

rhamzeh··on Wire is now on F-Droid
Unfortunately Signal devs seem dead-set against F-Droid (whether on F-Droid, or hosting their own F-Droid repository) for some reason.

rhamzeh··on Moving Google Contacts and Calendar to NextCloud
I would suggest EteSync [1], they do have an adapter [2] that would remove the e2e encryption, but I recommend running that adapter locally and not over the network to actually benefit from the e2e.

rhamzeh··on Ask HN: What is your system for backing up family photos and video?
On Gnome, DejaDup recently rolled out restic support, and I must say, it's looking really good!

If you use Gnome, I would encourage you to use it and give feedback here [1]

rhamzeh··on Re: Moxie on Web3
On Android, Signal already offers reproducible builds[1].

rhamzeh··on NitroPhone 2/Pro with 4.5 years of software updates
All the description seems to be just generic Pixel 6 (Pro) + GrapheneOS. The one addition I found was that they would remove the hardware if you ask them to:

"Optional: For very high security requirements, both microphones and acceleration and rotation sensors can be removed. Indeed, acceleration and rotation sensors can be misused as microphones. This physically prevents conversations in the environment from being recorded. Phone calls can still be made with an external headset."

rhamzeh··on Germany’s Sovereign Tech Fund: Strengthening Digital Infrastructure+Open Source
> The people listed in the study are all female

> strongly suggests that this is a diversity initiative in disguise

It would be great if we can use this logic backwards.

For any team or initiative we see that is all male, we treat it like a discrimination initiative in disguise.

If you don't treat every situation of the above of all male teams/projects/funds like that, I am not sure why you do so in this case.

rhamzeh··on Show HN: SlikSafe – A decentralized, end-to-end encrypted alternative to Dropbox
It's no longer maintained I think but probably still works: they did have Syncthing Lite which functions like a traditional client - https://f-droid.org/packages/net.syncthing.lite - https://github.com/syncthing/syncthing-lite
rhamzeh··on Apple broke up with me
Or you can buy audiobooks from https://libro.fm/ or similar and support open formats and your local bookstores. Leave audible as a last resort, the more you buy from, the more you are 1) supporting them 2) telling then you don't mind DRMed media.
rhamzeh··on Show HN: I wrote a book about Elasticsearch
Well this was unfortunate. I have purchased the book, but it was not immediately obvious anywhere that by "book" you meant a third party website.

Is there anyway to get access without signing up to Notion?

If not, sadly I won't be reading it, but that's my problem not yours.

May I suggest adding a "What you will get" section where you clearly state that people won't be able to read without signing up to Notion?

Edit: I just saw that you have that listed under the "How does it work?" FAQ - My bad.

rhamzeh··on FairEmail: Open-source, privacy friendly email app for Android
Sometimes, the FDroid client errors out. Some steps I generally found helpful to fix this issue were: - Refresh the repos (pull down to refresh) - Reduce the caching thresold (Settings => Other (Bottom of the screen) => Keep Cached Apps) - Wait for a bit then try again

You can also always download this directly from the browser.

rhamzeh··on Oops: Google admits failing to wipe all Android apps with location-tracking X-Mo
There is no way or permission on (standard) Android to grant a trusted app access to your location, without granting it to Google first.
rhamzeh··on Signal AppImage for Linux
Flatpaks, nope. At least nothing I could notice.

Snaps, yes definitely, but mostly when there is a UI involved.

I tend to prefer Flatpaks for apps with a UI.

Snaps would have been good for CLI apps if Canonical would just give it a rest already, and allow them to be decentralized and stop pushing them so hard as if that would make us use them.

So while I do sometimes use snap packages, I'd prefer not to.

rhamzeh··on Messenger Comparisons – Threema, Signal, Telegram and WhatsApp
While this (Threema) is Open Source, I feel it does not align with the spirit of FOSS.

See the commits here for example: https://github.com/threema-ch/threema-android/commits/main

It's one commit per version. Contributions go to a private email instead of a public mailing list. All development happens in private and pushed to the public in a version bump with no changelog.

So yeah it has an AGPL License (which is good) and meets the minimum of FOSS requirements, but it gives of the feeling that they're following the letter, but not the spirit of FOSS.

I would definitely not use it or push any friend to use it.

rhamzeh··on Telegram Voice Chats
The problem isn't killing the apps in the background, it's whitelisting others.

I want every app I don't manually allow to run in the background to be terminated after a short period of 30s~60s or so.
