rezendi··on 2,000 Years of AI Doom
The last two thousand, not the next two thousand
rezendi··on They wanted to save us from a dark AI future. Then six people were killed
Y'know, I'm totally happy for people to (very, very clearly) use my series "[Extropia's Children](https://aiascendant.com/p/extropias-children)" as a basis for their own work - which has been happening a lot lately - but some kind of citation would have been nice. Sheesh.
rezendi··on Piranesi, Borges, and the Labyrinths of Time
...Clarke's novel is the first, second, third, fourth, and fifth Google result, _and_ the sidebar, when one (incognito-)searches "Piranesi".
rezendi··on The life, death, and afterlife of literary fiction
I'm reading _Divine Invasions: A Life Of Philip K. Dick_ and just got to the point where he sold his first short story. He was paid $75 for it, at a time when the mortgage on his (old, small, but still) two-story Berkeley house was $27.50. This was 1950.
rezendi··on Piranesi, Borges, and the Labyrinths of Time
it's remarkable to me that one can write an entire essay about Piranesi without even mentioning Susanna Clarke's great novel PIRANESI, a pretty significant instance of his cultural influence!
rezendi··on Extropia's Children Redux
How rationalism, cryptocurrencies, effective altruism, and modern AI philosophy/doom were all birthed from an obscure 90s mailing list.
rezendi··on Ask HN: Who is hiring? (April 2022)
HappyFunCorp | Software Engineers | Remote | Full-time or freelance | https://happyfuncorp.com

We seek excellent web and mobile developers, currently especially senior and versatile engineers who are comfortable doing architecture / technical oversight / big-picture solution development in collaboration with clients. Much of our work these days is in JavaScript (especially React/Next) but we're pretty polyglot.

We're very comfortable with non-traditional employment configurations. Are you an entrepreneur who wants to allocate 50% of your time to your own startup; a tinkerer who spends 1-2 days/week on side projects; or a traveler who seeks to work full-time for six months, travel the world for a bit, then return and repeat? We explicitly support and approve of all those things, no awkward explanations or uncomfortable compromises required. If you're good enough to context switch like that successfully, HFC is the place for you.

We do web and app (and occasionally blockchain) development for clients ranging from startups to the Fortune 500. We've shipped hundreds of projects, have won various awards including "App of the Year" from Apple, and are currently probably best-known for having built Bookshop.org.

We seek excellent web and mobile developers, currently especially senior Node engineers and mobile developers with React Native experience. We work on a wide variety of projects with a whole panoply of technologies, so we prefer generalists with a reasonable amount of experience under their belt -- but there are always exceptions.

rezendi··on Clinging Desperately to a Metaphor (2011)
This really depends on how you look at it. On an absolute inflation-adjusted dollars-per-person-per-year basis, rather than a relative / percentage basis, GDP growth over the last decade has been substantially higher than that of the 1950s. Even 2% of $55,000 is still greater than 7% of $15,000... https://fred.stlouisfed.org/series/NYGDPPCAPKDUSA
rezendi··on Woman sues L.A. after being struck by car on a street where tents block sidewalk
? "And then I walk around the streets and see all these homeless" refers, clearly, to the homeless "living on the streets."
rezendi··on Woman sues L.A. after being struck by car on a street where tents block sidewalk
This is wildly incorrect. As of Dec 2019, there were 5,000 "unsheltered" / "sleeping rough" people in the UK, population ~65,000,000, according to The Economist (cite: https://www.economist.com/britain/2019/12/18/on-any-one-wint...) which was fewer than the number in San Francisco, population ~800,000 (cite: https://hsh.sfgov.org/wp-content/uploads/2020/01/ExecutiveSu... ).

rezendi··on Len Sassaman and Satoshi

This is amusingly silly. Changing the composition of the Court is not unheard of and FDR, not exactly known as the poster child of "destroying the legitimacy of Constitutional government," nearly did it in 1937 (and likely would have if not for another untimely death.) https://today.law.harvard.edu/if-democrats-win-in-november-s...
rezendi··on The GitHub Arctic Code Vault
Archive Program director here. One of the most interesting things our advisory committee told us is that it's really hard to determine what's important in advance: history is replete with lists composed by wealthy people of the books they thought most important, carefully preserved for posterity, whereas what modern historians _really_ want is ordinary people's shopping lists, of which almost none survived. That's one reason we cast a wide net and archived millions of repos instead of eg just the most-starred 100K..Even seemingly trivial repos might collectively be the modern technological equivalent of Renaissance shopping lists, for the historians who may take a particular interest in this (possibly) especially wacky and volatile era.
rezendi··on The GitHub Arctic Code Vault
Archive Program director here. It is basically microfilm (albeit very long-lived) but the data is mostly stored in a pixellated form, not unlike QR codes, although every reel also contains human-readable instructions (and code) re how to unpack its data.
