reyqn··on Show HN: I “wrote” a kid's book with ChatGPT and Midjourney
I hope if you program you always do it in assembly language, otherwise you didn't really make anything.
reyqn··on Windows Subsystem For Linux a.k.a. WSL 1.0.0 released
It's sad since WSL 1 really is more interesting than WSL 2. Also better suited for my use cases, since it's on the same network interface.
reyqn··on Show HN: DivestOS – Long-term support for end-of-life Android devices
Yeah I was checking what support they advertised for my old nexus 5 and the recently retired oneplus X of my girlfriend. The nexus 5 is on 9.0, mostly working, the oneplus X isn't supported at all. That's not long-term support.
reyqn··on 2D Global Illumination in Godot (2020)
Firefox reader mode works wonders for those kind of issues
reyqn··on Transmission 4.0.0 beta 1
So no functional differences?
reyqn··on RootMyTV is a user-friendly exploit for rooting/jailbreaking LG webOS smart TVs
You can run Netflix on rooted Android, you just have to hide root from the app
reyqn··on K-9 Mail 6.000
Fairemail is hands down the best email app I've ever used
reyqn··on A simple system I’m using to stay in touch with hundreds of people
Yeah, that's what I'm saying. This system is terrible advice for someone who isn't really struggling with people, to such a point that it's detrimental to his wellbeing.
reyqn··on A simple system I’m using to stay in touch with hundreds of people
Who is arrogant there? It's not an issue not to keep in touch every 3 weeks with someone. When you have a child, you just meet new people, parents of your child's friends for example. Relationships don't disappear, they pause, when you get back to them, it's like riding a bike, and if you don't get back to them, it's ok. It's what you do with your life which dictates who you meet, and who you have relationships with. Just live your life, you don't have to try and hack everything... If you really need a system like this, why not, but even I who suck at keeping in touch feel this is overkill and unnatural.
reyqn··on Why Is C Faster Than Java (2009)
Ok so JNDI's purpose is actually accessing remote code. You just have to not give it any untrusted data. It seems like a dangerous tool to use.
reyqn··on Why Is C Faster Than Java (2009)
Was there not a flaw in the jndi api for ldap? log4j was just the entry point from what I understood.
reyqn··on uBlacklist: Blocks specific sites from appearing in Google search results
Yeah it seems smarter to ask a result without the websites you don't want to see than to filter them out after.
reyqn··on Drop-In Replacement for Memcached
Reading their github I was under the impression that it was an actual drop in replacement, their capability status passed all tests from memcapable. Am I missing something?
reyqn··on Proof of stake is incapable of producing a consensus
I'm not really knowledgeable about all this, but mining of PoW currencies right now seems to rely a lot on mining pools. Isn't there a risk that they are "the rich" and people trust them? What's the difference with PoS there?
reyqn··on An opinionated guide on how to reverse engineer software
Reader view is a nice firefox feature (press F9)
reyqn··on Privacy Is a Human Right
I find it kind of ironic that I'm getting an access denied when trying to view the blog post on my VPN (hosted by OVH) that I'm using specifically to protect my privacy (certificate pinning at work)
reyqn··on It takes a PhD to develop that
It's not really what the MS devs said though: "I believe what you’re doing is describing something that might be considered an entire doctoral research project in performant terminal emulation"

This seems to mean, nobody has ever done that, it is a research project (a doctorate thesis must be about something that has never been researched before, at least where I live).

This particular problem cannot be a PhD subject, because it has already been researched, solved and done multiple times, by different persons and on different projects.

Someone can use the knowledge already widely available on the internet to grasp what the issue is, and implement a solution in their own project.

Years of experience aren't a PhD. Years of experience can help you understand a thesis, but only if the research doesn't exist yet, can it be considered a doctoral research project.

reyqn··on WallStreetBets vs WallStreet: It's not about the money anymore
I don't known if the kind of publicity they're getting right now is good for them. They could end up losing way more.
reyqn··on Dear ImGui – Bloat-free graphical user interface library for C++
I would guess, since it has been rebranded on christmas day, that it's named Dear ImGui because when you would write a letter to Santa Claus, you would start by "Dear Santa" (or at least in french, "Cher père Noël").

Maybe a parallel is to be made between the library and Santa Claus, because if you ask for something kindly, you would magically have it, without it being cumbersome for you.

reyqn··on FreePN: Open-source peer-to-peer VPN service
Yeah they don't even give it credit when it's basically a glorified wrapper around it.
reyqn··on Show HN: I made earrings that work like earphones
This remains to be seen. Good luck!
reyqn··on Show HN: I made earrings that work like earphones
A quick search shows lots of people thought of this before https://www.theverge.com/circuitbreaker/2018/7/12/17563846/a... https://thegadgetflow.com/portfolio/combination-earbud-earri... https://teqnizan.com/ https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/scandi/swings-bluetooth...
reyqn··on Teaching our five year old to code by cheating
Funny that the code provided in the article doesn't work, but the right (working) code is the one pictured on the header image.
reyqn··on What you could steal from the Kakoune code editor, and get away with
Kak-oon (https://github.com/mawww/kakoune/blob/master/doc/pages/faq.a...)
reyqn··on Kitty – A fast, featureful, GPU based terminal emulator
It doesn't support windows, so it can't really compare.
reyqn··on ByteDance won't sell TikTok U.S. operations to Oracle or Microsoft: CGTN
I think he meant drones operated by china, but I might be wrong.
reyqn··on AMD Announces Ryzen “Zen 3” and Radeon “RDNA2” Presentations for October
Wouldn't SR-IOV support (which is rumored in nvidia's chips) make vfio on this kind of setup possible?
reyqn··on Tech firms face growing resentment of parent employees during Covid-19
I don't really care that people with kids have advantages over me, in fact, I pushed for them to have these advantages, because they need it more than I do.

However, I don't think we should consider that people that have kids contribute more actively to the continuation of the human race, or our society. The human race / our society will be just fine with less kids.

reyqn··on Bella Thorne, OnlyFans and the battle over monetising content
That's the real issue. The target isn't people who can afford it, it's any horny guy, whether they are rich or poor. Rich people won't actually be affected by it, but it keeps some poor people in misery.

Also I would guess poor people are more likely to lack intimate affection, so they are probably the most common profile.

They don't have the income, but they spend the money anyway.
