rexarex··on The short leash AI coding method for beating Fable
So you posit that humans are solipsistic by default, but some (most?) develop more and realize they’re not the only conscious being out there?
rexarex··on San Francisco coyote swims to Alcatraz
Half a mile
rexarex··on The Beer Can (2023)
They have a hard time staffing the IT roles usually. Throw an app in, you can just do a 90ish day ‘summer’ deployment at some stations.
rexarex··on Restrictions on house sharing by unrelated roommates
Typically it’s two per bedroom plus one. The max occupancy is set on the lease.
rexarex··on Restrictions on house sharing by unrelated roommates
Depends on where and local laws. In San Francisco you can swap roommates out one for one and they landlord can not reasonably stop you. They can request an application if they want but they can’t reject them unless they have a very good reason. Most landlords don’t bother to waste their time.
rexarex··on The Machine Stops (1909)
This was the first prediction of The Internet. It’s such a great short story too. It’s pretty salient even today.
rexarex··on People Who Hype Cursor Usually Lack Technical Skills
Cursor with Gemini 2.5 pro has been really great.
rexarex··on World's darkest and clearest skies at risk from industrial megaproject
I think there’s ways to get out there at night. I know people host ‘clandestinos’ aka parties out there.
rexarex··on Making "Social" Social Again – Ev Williams New App
It’s a nice idea. I know someone who released something super similar called TreeTop. There’s also something I’ve been getting ads for called NomadTable. There’s an urge for connection out there.
rexarex··on Show HN: Itineraries.io – I built a joint trip planner in between surgeries
It’s free if you get a job on a base there!
rexarex··on Show HN: Itineraries.io – I built a joint trip planner in between surgeries
This is really cool. I also had similar frustrations with excel on big group trips and made an app called https://avosquado.app that is similar but also different.

I like the live save of input. I had some UI issues on mobile web but am curious to check it out more on my desktop! What did you use as a backend?

rexarex··on FTC Report Confirms: Commercial Surveillance Is Out of Control
You mean the free product Microsoft Clarity that everyone uses?
rexarex··on The Lives of Others (2006 film)
Super great movie. We watched it in our transitional justice class in university. Our professor was from the eastern bloc and grew up with the informants and the collapse of it all. It was interesting to study what happens after the end of an oppressive regime. The movie illustrated that pretty well in its timeline.
rexarex··on Ask HN: How do you stay organized for solo dev?
Asana! They have a board view and you can just create a project that is a 'sprint' by adding categories and putting it in the board view. And then add tickets from other projects to the sprint and drag them through different states. And it's free.

Mobile app is also very very good which means you can easily update or use it to make tickets while on the go...or in bed.

rexarex··on Ask HN: Why do message queue-based architectures seem less popular now?
On mobile the phones are so powerful now that you can just make them do most of the heavy lifting :)
rexarex··on K8s Service Meshes: The Bill Comes Due
The docs are TERRIBLE once you need to actually use them in prod.

rexarex··on Antarctic English
Here’s a few a remember from my time at McMurdo Station

- The fry, fried > The accumulation of brain fry, mental fog, apathy etc that builds over time accumulated on ice especially during winter.

- The CRUD > a general cold everyone eventually gets and then is immune to on the base. Usually there’s a lot of congestion or ‘crud’. Probably exacerbated by the volcanic dust and dry climate.

- Ice Wife (or husband) A monogamous couple but only on the ice. May or may not be involved in other relationships off ice.

rexarex··on Antarctic English
Pretty sure when you’re pregnant there you get shipped off ice. They pregnancy test you if you do a winter over. They’re not equipped to delivery babies there and pregnancies don’t happen quickly.

rexarex··on We have reached an agreement in principle for Sam to return to OpenAI as CEO
Money won.
rexarex··on Belgrade's kafana pub culture
The cafe culture is real in The Balkans. In Albania there would be five cafes side by side and they were all packed. Similar feeling in Serbia although I am sure there are some big differences I'm ignoring. I loved it.
rexarex··on The Internet Free Zone (1997)
So innocent and naive. Now we just sell the user data to advertisers.
rexarex··on Story Behind Hackathon Photo
Did these participants sign a release on the photos or was this snapped without consent?
rexarex··on Pro-cash movement warns that people could be losing more than they bargained for
iPhones are hardware locked now they can only be sold for parts.
rexarex··on Health officials delayed report linking fluoride to brain harm
My understanding is that some water sources naturally contain fluoride anyhow so this isn’t a great comparison. From the sources I read awhile ago they started fluoride additives because it was known that certain areas like Texas had bad teeth.
rexarex··on The Hammerhead Worm
The province of Alberta in Canada is famously rat free. They stopped the spreading westward wave of rats in the 1950s and have maintained this status.

‘Wormhole’ nice.
rexarex··on Ask HN: What are the top BaaS (Back end as a Service) platforms in 2023
Sure. It is an MVP for a CRUD app and would have some minor async worker stuff as well. The authentication piece of some of these BaaS is compelling.

Ideally a scalable solution that supports queues and uses a relational DB for easy migration to AWS in the future should the product scale. Ideally trying to avoid getting locked into a limited platform and needing to kludge around it

rexarex··on Ask HN: What are the top BaaS (Back end as a Service) platforms in 2023
Yes, but this uses SQLite as a database right?
