revnode··on NY Senate Bill S5474 proposing a universal single payer health plan for NYers
You paid much more than that. A substantial part of your rent is property taxes. I also doubt you included sales taxes in that number. Then there's more esoteric stuff like tariffs, etc
revnode··on US Historical Income Tax Rates
Charts can be deceptive even if the axes are clearly labeled. It's deceptive exactly for the reasons I stated. It excludes the majority of the data from the chart.
revnode··on Tesla fired an employee after he posted driverless tech reviews on YouTube
They have remote root access to the vehicle. Even if they didn’t, they can push an update specific to your vehicle that then drives you off a cliff at a designated time.
revnode··on Russia’s way of conducting urban warfare bodes ill for Kyiv
Right, exactly. Isn't that how it's supposed to work?
revnode··on Russia’s way of conducting urban warfare bodes ill for Kyiv
> could you use better news sources than the NY Post?

No. You don't like it? Make your own comment. I like the NY Post.

revnode··on Russia’s way of conducting urban warfare bodes ill for Kyiv
> To prevent their atrocities from being broadcast they’ll probably prioritise cutting the internet.

You only need one good connection.

revnode··on Spotify deletes 70 Joe Rogan episodes
As others have pointed out, this isn't about COVID. That said, the notion that some topics cannot be discussed or cannot be discussed in a certain way is not only wrong, it is outrageous.
revnode··on Spotify deletes 70 Joe Rogan episodes
> it was ultimately a matter of money for him

Not necessarily. He could have seen the writing on the wall with Google/YouTube and wanted a platform where he would not be censored ... and may have miscalculated.

revnode··on Building a modern home in the woods
> Modern windows (especially high end) can be both energy efficient

Yes, compared to other windows. Compared to a well-insulated wall with external insulation and 6" of interior insulation, they're not great.

Good windows are an R5. A well-insulated wall cavity can easily be an R30.

revnode··on Building a modern home in the woods
> The choices don’t seem particularly shocking to me

Did you see all the glass? And the snow? Those two don't go together, even with triple glazing. Then again, if you have major $$$ to spend on heating, I guess it doesn't matter.

revnode··on Ask HN: What to do instead of drinking alcohol?
This guy parents.
revnode··on Intel removes Xinjiang references from shareholder letter
> There are a billion and a half Chinese people.

How long is that going to last? Populations fluctuate. They shot themselves in the foot with their one-child policy.

India is also quite populous, but doesn't seem to exert the same kind of influence.

revnode··on Ask HN: 27, accidentally became wealthy, lost drive. What should I do?
You think too much. When thoughts aren’t purposeful (get from A to B), your mind will wander and frequently lead you to unpleasant places. When you’re married with children, very rarely will you have time to let your thoughts wander.
revnode··on Ask HN: 27, accidentally became wealthy, lost drive. What should I do?
> How did you get out of this? What can I do?

Get married. Your wife will know what to do with the money. Have kids. You won't need to worry about this sort of stuff again. I have 3. I get motivated at 7 AM, every morning.

revnode··on Nevada cops use civil forfeiture to steal a veterans life savings
All seized funds should go to the treasury. You get rid of the financial incentive, this stupidity goes away.
revnode··on Joe Rogan, confined to Spotify, is losing influence
The argument isn't that false information doesn't have an effect. It's that your attempts to manipulate people through censorship has the opposite effect.

revnode··on Canada to require vaccinations for air and train passengers
There are a lot of assumptions in that statement.
revnode··on The Problem with Ethereum
> It's like critiquing Ethereum's community by pointing at Ethereum Classic

That's exactly what the article did.

revnode··on Moon Tricks Tesla's Full Self-Driving Feature into Thinking It's a Yellow Light
With hardware, comes software. Having fewer targets for your software can simplify the software and lead to superior results. Edge cases will always be there. You might be introducing some in a particular area with their vision-only approach, but reducing them substantially elsewhere. With radar, they had phantom breaking events and according to them, it's the primary reason they want to ditch it.

I'm on the fence as to whether it's a good or bad decision ... but let's not pretend they're idiots.

revnode··on How do Chrome extensions impact browser performance?
There is a 5th way. Sponsored content. Basically where people pay to have an article written about a particular topic or product.
revnode··on Google Drive bans distribution of “misleading content”
This is the key problem with all censorship, however well-intentioned. A person is needed to censor. People make mistakes. Sometimes by accident, sometimes on purpose. There is a strong dis-incentive to having any transparency or accountability. If there were, you might be held liable for your mistakes and nobody wants that.
revnode··on Tesla’s $16k Quote for a $700 Fix Is Why Right to Repair Matters
> 1. invest money in a supply chain to have parts in stock for the battery assembly(take many months).

They already have this for other parts, it's trivial to extend the model to the battery. The problem is that the battery was not designed to be serviced without specialized tooling and expertise.

It doesn't have to be that way. It was their choice. They made that choice because it costs them less money to service the batteries in bulk at a specialized facility, at the expense of the customer. It's not like the customer has a choice. They already bought the car. What are they going to do?

Here is another option:

4. Design your vehicles in a way where a $1 part can be easily detached and replaced by anyone with basic tooling, instead of charging the customer $18k for a new battery.

This isn't just an issue with Tesla. This is an issue with almost all manufacturers today. They make more money when they replace the entire assembly.

Apple operates in the same way. If one of the keys breaks on your laptop, Apple will replace half the laptop. That's the only option. You can't replace the key. It was designed this way.

revnode··on Tesla’s $16k Quote for a $700 Fix Is Why Right to Repair Matters
That rate likely includes transportation to the facility to do the repair. I would happily pay that over paying $16k and so did the customer. That's a fantastic argument for RTR.
revnode··on Indian state proposes two-child policy, stringent measures for violators
A substantial aspect of education is learning about how others live and alternative forms of organization. If you don't know any better, the status quo seems like the only outcome possible. If you know others are living better lives and corruption is optional, questions start being asked.
revnode··on El Salvador to adopt Bitcoin as legal tender
Why does it matter how many dollars the beer is worth? It is worth the same number of bitcoins yesterday, today, and tomorrow. That's the only stability that is relevant.
revnode··on “Computer science is not about computers”
I don't think there's necessarily a disagreement here. You're talking about "how" to approach problems and he's talking about "what" the problem space is.
revnode··on My experience as a Gazan girl getting into Silicon Valley companies
Here is the link to today's discussion of what is happening in China: https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=26253886

There is not a single mention of Han Chinese immigration to Xinjiang, in either positive or negative light.

The Jews who immigrated to Israel were fleeing persecution at home and you chose to attack them. That is shameful and you should be ashamed of yourself.

All people have the right to live wherever they choose, whether they be Jews, Arabs, or any ethnicity. Singling people out based on their ethnicity ... well, that's just racist, isn't it?

revnode··on My experience as a Gazan girl getting into Silicon Valley companies
Can you point me toward other threads about other parts of the world where a particular ethnicity is singled out in a negative light for immigrating? I'll take back everything I said if you can find ONE.
revnode··on 'Coup Attempt' of Reddit's Wallstreetbets Forum Is Averted
> Does anyone have any ideas on how this could be done?

You can get rid of the automated variety pretty easily. What you can't do is stop people from paying others to post specific content. At that point, it's a human and they can pass any automated bot test you come up with.

revnode··on Silicon Valley is shutting down speech loopholes. Latest target: live content
> What rules do we put in place that they have to host some of this content? Blatant misinformation, vague encouragement of violence... hate?

Why do they have to be rules? Why can't we have a culture of tolerance? Robots aren't running these companies. They're people, just like you and me. They can choose to be tolerant.

Tolerance is about tolerating the most horrid things. Not because it's nice or those things have some value. They're horrid, they have no value. It's because the alternative is worse. Because censorship is worse. Because when a person is censored, when they can't speak, they resort to violence and through censorship, you encourage violence. And violence can't be censored. It can only be suppressed with further violence.
