revlolz··on No Salary Increase This Year for FTEs at Microsoft
Amazon, most people got trivial market adjustments. 1-2% increases when cola was way above that for social security has realistically translated to paycuts which are compounded further with poor stock performance and sign-on bonuses starting to ween down.
revlolz··on Discord plans to make everyone change their username
I'm sick and tired of services degrading quality and "fixing" things that aren't broken.
revlolz··on Remote work brings hidden penalty for young professionals, study says
Propaganda piece from economists. Hello CBRE. I'm part of the demographic they claim and it couldn't be further from the truth for me. In remote env, if your seniors (management or peers) opt for their productivity 100% over training juniors then you have a shitty team and that's hardly unique to remote work. In fact, you will likely spend more years wasted commuting into office doing nothing as opposed to having more time to experiment, hypothesize, and learn. Good teams make it policy and process to lift everyone. They have networking events in person and remote. They accept the situations that as adults and leaders we don't need mom and dad to hold us so we can go down the slide and write a pr. Bad teams hyperfixate on metrics like cr revisions, drown newbies on complexity impossible, ambiguity black holes projects. Again, these things happen in the office too, so why is this study focusing on an issue prescribing it unique to remote? I don't know.
revlolz··on Is the US education system in a state of collapse, and what caused it?
Just an anecdote and not necessarily representative of the majority, in certain areas, teaching has taken on cult-like characteristics. Teachers engage in a radical cycle of self-sacrifice, constantly striving for virtuous superiority over their colleagues, often to the detriment of their own financial and emotional well-being. This mindset justifies exponentially increasing demands each year, requiring teachers to sacrifice more of themselves in the name of what is best for the children. District administrations, influencers, unions, and politicians seem to be enabling this as much as possible in order to cut costs (financially and risk). If one questions this approach, they may be labeled not only as ineffective in their profession, but also as morally deficient for putting children's futures at risk. From afar it appears as toxic nightmare that undermines a better education system.
revlolz··on Patriot Act on steroids: anti-TikTok Trojan horse for censorship, surveillance
I'm curious what people think about tiktok' plans. They vowed to move data into us soil and have external audits. It came across as actual good faith compromises from my perspective.
revlolz··on TikTok Congress Hearing
I noticed this too, but it sincerely just seems like self preservation. Should the US government come after me after being lobbied by Meta and other conglomerates I surely would be "loud" about it too.
revlolz··on Amazon doubling down on return to office
Probably, but the above poster's paraphrasing "people who talk but dont do" is what was in my mind.
revlolz··on Amazon to lay off 9,000 more workers after earlier cuts
It's on a case by case basis, but the S-team leader (one below jassy) has to approve. This kills most cases. For typical employee this means this has to go through your boss and then 3-5 other executives.
revlolz··on Who is still inside the metaverse?
No one's 'still in' the METAVERSE cause zuckbuckland isn't what people who have VR devices actually want.
revlolz··on Amazon to lay off 9,000 more workers after earlier cuts
Pxt from what I gathered is like HR
revlolz··on Amazon doubling down on return to office
I've seen a handful of seniors already quit and some of the best L8's/directors openly distressed with no lever to improve morale. Many teams are now down to the idea guys. Amazing leadership from the top. Layoffs, RTO, stock down over 40% YoY, and no comp increases even with inflation. They must be playing limbo because' how low can they go?'
revlolz··on Governments should compete for residents, not businesses
How do you find out what kind of city a place is? This might seem downright stupid to say, but I don't even know what types to even be looking for.
revlolz··on It Turns Out Money Does Buy Happiness
In all likelihood a 75k number was output to an equation where there are two earners making that because I agree the 125 to 150 range is where households begin independence now. Anecdotally, I've debated this with friends and often times luxary and entertainment is 100% overlooked when in reality people have to do some sort of hobby or entertainment to make life tolerable.
revlolz··on HP have updated their printers to ban ‘non-HP’ cartridges
Captured FTC regulators likely won't do anything.
revlolz··on Why American workers aren’t returning to the office like their intl counterparts
Ditch your loving families, homes, and autonomy to come help Steve and Karen feel validated in their management roles.

Commuting is fun everyone, it's not like the endless traffic fatalities killing more people than guns and violence each year will ever actually hurt you in a way that damages our profits. That makes you accountable and ownership is big here at Big Co. Inc. Just think of all the positive vibes you can check while hordes of people fail to zipper onto freeway junctions ensuring you never see your children during sunlight hours.

revlolz··on Amazon will require employees return to the office 3 days a week
Remote work allowed me to upskill easier because knowledge sharing occurred through digital mechanisms rather than be required through antequeted in office bullshit where management got to curate and limit to their heart's content. Social connectivity increased because rather than losing 10 hours a week to bullshit traffic commutes, I was able to work on myself and pursue things like cognitive behavior therapy and working on my home or life. My coworkers met as often as we desired to have happy hours, in person meetings for launches, or team building/charter creations. I stuck with a faang for over a year which was well beyond the typical in office attrition rate. To me, my anecdote is stronger than yours. To me, your anecode is wildy frustrating and a call to support these terrible corporations while they grasp back to reclaim the power they held pre 2019. Remote work was such a boon to these companies and I reject your factless notion that companies are dying to this. You want to slowly kill your company? Waste 10+ unpaid hours a week of your employees so you can exert asanine control over them.
revlolz··on Amazon will require employees return to the office 3 days a week
Every respectable team is lead by a manager and director who respects a person's choice to be most productive. In office, remote, hybrid... The sweet spot has been personal choice and every team I've seen in the shithole known as amazon who has touted some nonsensical horse puckey where they "have data" demonstrating otherwise is just flat out lying.
revlolz··on To Increase Equity, School Districts Eliminate Honors Classes
A pedagogical choice wouldn't clip the wings of talented students to make others feel better. This is 100% DEI morals and it can be criticized for using race and ethnicity as a deterministic factor of hypothesized quality. This is race statistics gone wrong, only the DEI clubs cheer for it because it supports their current narrative.
revlolz··on Sharing Your Netflix Account
Netflix is hiring roles for digital ads teams where they specifically mention wanting to push ads on the platform to subscribers.

Netflix got captured and is now in the process of killing its core user experiences paying customers enjoy. It's inevitable poor performance as a result of these unfriendly changes and the terrible content they create has enacted death by a thousand cuts we see for each one of the online platforms like Facebook.

revlolz··on Apple: The only big tech giant going against the job cuts tide
By that logic Amazon is a vastly superior company because they make more products than Apple. Amazon makes its own hardware and products: Alexa, Kindle, Ring, etc. They have ground and air fleets. Amazon holds majority marketshare with online web services...

I don't think this 'real' sentiment is best used to describe Amazon.

revlolz··on U.S. economy expands at 2.9% annual rate in fourth quarter
Fair enough, I did not concisely or accurately demonstrate that wages adjusted for cpi have returned to ~2019 levels which in my mind seems stagnant.
revlolz··on U.S. economy expands at 2.9% annual rate in fourth quarter
Fair points. My opinion is best oversimplified would be due to our return to 2019 levels on wages with pricing on maslow items having skyrocketed. Rate changes and housing data keeps me uncomfortable.
revlolz··on U.S. economy expands at 2.9% annual rate in fourth quarter
I think you had a little projection there calling me in a bubble. Why don't we focus on what is actually happening instead discrediting who I am with assumptions.

Wages are stagnant, energy costs are going up.

Hourly Wages change yoy https://fred.stlouisfed.org/graph/?g=Zeb7

Energy Price Index https://fred.stlouisfed.org/graph/?g=Zebr

>food prices have come down

False, and before you blame the egg crisis on the reported avian flu, milk and bread demonstrate the same rise. Pick a product, it's gone up, PPI for all commodities shot up indicating macro changes to the economy (in this case reactions to inflation where producers raise rates) https://fred.stlouisfed.org/graph/?g=Ze8G

eggs https://fred.stlouisfed.org/graph/?g=Ze80 milk https://fred.stlouisfed.org/graph/?g=Ze8b bread https://fred.stlouisfed.org/graph/?g=Ze8h

>housing is crashing

True, but not in ways that helps consumers. Landlords are doubling down and renting. Properties are sitting on market far longer than normal. Median sales price will decrease with interest rate changes, but with the root cause issue unresolved of lack of construction (supply), very large demand as the new generations age, and flippers and renter barons unchecked.. The housing market is not going to be affordable for low, middle, or even upper middle class citizens. I also think this kind of talk completely belittles how massive of a change occurred to housing prices in the last 5 years. Compare that to wage increases and viola, your normal every day person is in bad shape.

median sales price https://fred.stlouisfed.org/graph/?g=Ze67

Do you want anecdote? People aren't doing well. Go talk to your neighbors. A single corrective change percent movement from GDP reported by Axios is manipulative and a narrative article in my opinion.

revlolz··on U.S. economy expands at 2.9% annual rate in fourth quarter
There is a housing crisis on hand, people are struggling to afford food due to inflation, and hundreds of thousands have lost their jobs. The "normal" person who isn't a SV millionaire has been gouged on every angle since covid started with little to no protection from captured regulators. Oh, and we're in a proxy war with Russia.

If you base your whole argument for recession off of Axios' year of year gdp change percentage you are hyperfixating a complex economic outlook and dumbing it down into a cherry picked metric that is showing up for any number of correlations such as return to work post lock downs.

You can take a look at the quarter of quarter change https://fred.stlouisfed.org/series/GDP#0

In my opinion it doesn't align with axios' narrative.

revlolz··on Is tipping getting out of control? Many consumers say yes
It's out of control. People are tipping 25% to 30% on almost all transactions with chip checkouts. Businesses are being shady and reversing the preselected % orders from lowest to highest and presenting highest to lowest. I've seen more videos of fraud on the rise where staff at businesses will add charges (not gratuity) or just select a % and inform customers this is "policy. "

We need to get rid of tipping all together.

revlolz··on “Copycat” layoffs won’t help tech companies or their employees
I don't disagree with that sentiment at all. These company's min/max their strategy and operations regardless of the human impact and that is terible. However, I find the sentiment irrelevant to calling out a fallacy in the thinking through the article that layoffs are social contagions.
revlolz··on “Copycat” layoffs won’t help tech companies or their employees
It's very clear and has been. Larger enterprises finance debts that carry interest rates. When rates go up, costs increase. It's the exact same thing in the mortgage industry. When you go to buy a home, how much you can afford is determined by your how much you earn, how much capital you have, and the interest rate to borrow what you don't have. We're going to ignore full cash purchases because companies do not operate on full cash basis.

The point to my main post is that it's asinine to relate all these layoffs as "copycatting" one another. It would be like saying you only eat food because I do and you are copying me.

Or it would be like saying each of us has 10 days worth of food to survive 30 days. I implemented rationing to stretch out to the 30 days. You implemented rationing adopting the same strategy, but to say you are a "copycat" would be ridiculous.

revlolz··on “Copycat” layoffs won’t help tech companies or their employees
How does this relate to my post?
revlolz··on “Copycat” layoffs won’t help tech companies or their employees
Deleting the post, I no longer wish to discuss this.
revlolz··on Ask HN: Google spam filter getting worse?
Why do you keep telling others they have no idea how hard it is?

My point from the higher level comment is that the customer does not care how hard it is. If chatgpt makes it harder there is nothing stopping Google from innovating and improving their detections. The comments are calling out that they seem to be falling behind the curve as more dangerous phishing and spam/fraud emails slip through.

I for one have no sympathy. Google did the same as other giants and gobbled up as much tech talent as they could only to layoff thousands later. If you are telling me I need to feel empathetic for the company reaping trillions from invasive data harvesting and monopolizing the most used digital services on the planet, I shall play the smallest violin I can find.
