revicon··on Apple kills the non-Touch Bar MacBook Pro
> Xubuntu on a Thinkpad x1

Was this install pretty painless? I'm due to buy a new laptop and Thinkpads are where I'm thinking about moving to. The x1 carbon and the T480. It's too bad that models after the T480 don't have a removable battery.

revicon··on Reddit has quarantined /r/The_Donald
Quarantine also prevents their posts from showing up on the front page or in the /r/all feed and (I think) you can’t access the sub if you aren’t already a member and are on the mobile app.
revicon··on Linux support on Lenovo personal systems
Is there any benefit to ordering a thinkpad pre-installed with Linux vs re-imaging it myself after purchasing (besides cost)? I’d have a few one-off cases where it’d be nice to boot into a windows environment but would otherwise love a dedicated Linux laptop. I’m wondering if there is any special configurations that Lenovo adds to their Linux installs that I would be missing if I just reimaged a windows one.
revicon··on Falsehoods programmers believe about Unix time

Unix time assumes that each day is exactly 86,400 seconds long (60 × 60 × 24 = 86,400), leap seconds be damned
I don't think I understand this claim. Unix time has no concept of a "day". Leap seconds increment UTC time, but doesn't add anything to the number of seconds that have elapsed since unix epoc.
revicon··on Fisher-Price Recalls Rock ’N Play Sleeper Linked to Infant Deaths
Reading the consumer reports report was a bit more scary to me...

At 4 a.m., when the mother checked, all was well, but by 7 a.m., the baby had stopped breathing. Her head was tilted to the side with her chin on her shoulder, compressing her airway. She was pronounced dead at the scene from positional asphyxia, or an inability to breathe caused by her position.

and

In one, on July 25, 2014, a 7-week-old boy was placed in a Rock ’n Play Sleeper while his grandmother was in the room, according to a lawsuit filed against Fisher-Price that was ultimately dismissed. The grandmother, Jan Hinson, of Greenville, S.C., says she looked at her grandson and saw he was “cocked over all the way, and he was blue and lifeless. It was absolutely awful.” She got the infant breathing again, and after a stay in the hospital, he was released.

https://www.consumerreports.org/recalls/fisher-price-rock-n-...

These weren't caused by children placed in the rock n play with extra stuff in it or children that rolled over, it was because an infant sleeping at an angle puts them at risk of dropping their head down and cutting off their airway.

We have a newborn 4 weeks old and received a rock n play as a gift. I put the baby in it next to me while I was working at my desk and I was constantly worried his head was tipped too far forward, it's not surprising to me that accidents like this have happened. When the baby was in the NICU the doctors highlighted to us multiple times that when babies sleep they need to be on a flat firm surface with no other items with them.

In 2010, the CPSC made it their recommendation that only flat angles of less than 5 degrees were safe, but Mattel lobbied to add a separate exception for surfaces of greater than 10 degrees so the rock n play would not violate their standards.

revicon··on Netflix claims Fortnite is now a bigger competitor than HBO
Remember that Netflix has huge amounts of traffic. They get enough data from a/b tests deployed to only a tiny fraction of their users.
revicon··on Firefox removes core product support for RSS/Atom feeds
Check out newspaper too. https://newspaper.readthedocs.io/en/latest/
revicon··on When Zuckerberg Asserted Control, Instagram’s Founders Chafed
> What would the point of this be? Why would FB want to shut off traffic to another one of their properties?

They make waay more money off of facebook ads than they do from instagram ads. And they're seeing people dumping Facebook in favor of just using Instagram. They're trying to staunch the bleed.

revicon··on Ask HN: Is there server-side software that we are missing in 2018?
>Static Website generators for non-blogs

We use Jekyll for more than one site which is not a blog, works great for us so far. What features do you think are missing that you wish it had?

revicon··on Why don't we start calling paying for fake followers what it really is
They are if a brand is paying you to endorse their products.
revicon··on US appeals court says Tinder Plus pricing is discriminatory
Is the opposite also "age discrimination"? McDonalds sells coffee at a discount to people over age 55.
revicon··on US appeals court says Tinder Plus pricing is discriminatory
> Netflix can deliver unlimited views of thousands of tv shows and movies for $10/mo

You're valuing the service that Tinder is providing in the wrong way. Netflix is offering you the ability to watch movies on demand. Tinder is offering you the ability to get laid.

The fact that Tinder is only $10 more than Netflix is the bit that's amazing.

revicon··on “I guess you can’t use NYU Libraries if you don’t have Twitter or Facebook?”
What would be a "vender-neutral" solution in this case? There are very very few people that host their own email servers on the internet meaning almost everyone hitting this login window have a gmail/yahoo/whatever email address.

revicon··on Dramatic Shifts in Technologies on Stack Overflow
This is interesting for sure. I wonder if the different build processes that react uses vs angular would skew this in one direction or another. I think npmcharts is just monitoring downloads.
revicon··on Dramatic Shifts in Technologies on Stack Overflow
I’m surprised I didn’t see React mentioned anywhere in the article. I wonder where its growth curve is compared to angular. Though to be fair, a bunch of the angular2 growth is people moving from “AngularJS” so it doesn’t exactly represent angular growth as a whole.
revicon··on Call for help: fund GIMP development and Libre animation
I definitely agree, the single window mode is way better.
revicon··on Call for help: fund GIMP development and Libre animation
Gimp is the only free alternative to photoshop that actually measures up feature wise. That its UI doesn't exactly mirror Adobe's isn't a negative. Many of Gimp's differences (key shortcuts to paste into a new image or drag and drop resizable select boxes, etc) are things that I never realized I wanted in an image editor until I made the switch.
revicon··on Ask HN: What non-work task have you automated?
That's only for calling. Twilio's docs say they do not support SMS sending from verified (not twilio owned) phone numbers.

According to twilio's documentation you cannot send sms messages from verified phone numbers, only twilio owned phone numbers.

revicon··on Ask HN: Best hard scifi AI novels?
The entire Gridlinked series by Neal Asher is set in a universe where AIs run government and are generally interacting with humans in a space opera / secret agent series of books, quite good IMO
revicon··on The underground world of Singapore
I was similarly impressed by the gigantic underground systems in Montreal. Many people go for months during the winter time never going above ground, working, shopping and living all inside the interconnected underground shopping malls businesses etc.

revicon··on I downloaded an app and was part of the Cajun Navy
I heard about Zello through this article a couple days ago. I installed it and to be honest it's been kind of interesting to listen to, reminded me of the old days when I wold listen in on my CB radio to the random chatter. I'm not sure how useful it is for actual communication though, it seems like SMS or similar apps are more efficient and let me know I didn't miss anything if I'm away from my phone for a while.
