revicon··on Why SMBs Don't Deploy SSO
Forced two factor auth can often solve this kind of thing though.
revicon··on Keep your phone number private with Signal usernames
Whatsapp message content can be pulled via a subpoena along with a lot of other private data. Signal's can not.

Right up until you want to share that YouTubeTV subscription with a family member via their "Family Sharing" feature. This is not supported and their support directs you to cancel your subscription and establish a new one using a regular gmail account.
revicon··on Serverless Framework to begin charging per service for orgs with >$2M ARR
I guess similar to Docker requiring orgs with more than 250 employees or more than $10 million in revenue to buy a paid subscription.
revicon··on Apple’s failure to build a key part for its new iPhones
Apple's gross margin percentage for its services segment (App Store, Apple Music, AppleCare, Apple Pay, iCloud storage services, AppleCare warranties, Apple Music, Apple Arcade, Apple TV+, and the Apple Card) is almost twice that of the products segment.

In 2021, the gross margin percentage for the services segment was nearly 70% as compared to the 35% gross margin percentage from the products segment.

revicon··on Apple’s failure to build a key part for its new iPhones
Apple really really really wants to make more money from software subscriptions rather than hardware.

They have a much better chance to do this in their walled garden environment of iPhones and iPads rather than on OSX where they face competition from other vendors.

They have no incentive to make it easier to be mobile on your macbook when they would much rather you be on your iPhone and iPad instead.

Someday they would really love for macbooks to go away and for everyone to use iOS for everything as they will own the entire environment and competition is much less.

revicon··on Is Google reCAPTCHA GDPR Compliant?
Hows that?
revicon··on macOS command-line tools you might not know about
I wrote this a while back to document managing WIFI connections using the command line.

https://www.mattcrampton.com/blog/managing_wifi_connections_...

I use these commands a lot when I'm in a coffeeshop and I'm trying to fine-grain control which wifi connection my laptop is using and dealing with passwords.

IMO OSX's UI for wifi network picking is clunky when you're in an area with >50 wifi networks in range, command line tools are much easier to deal with.

revicon··on Is Google reCAPTCHA GDPR Compliant?
Remember that Google reCAPTCHA v3 is invisible to the user. No accessibility issues.
revicon··on Is Google reCAPTCHA GDPR Compliant?
Google reCAPTCHA v3 has worked pretty well for us, we saw many instances in our logs where v2 was solved by scammers on our site using some automated tools that had a 25% success rate (plenty for automated scammer scripts) but upgrading to v3 stopped all the automated attacks. So far we haven’t seen successful solves of v3 in the wild and we’re a payments company so we see a lot of attempts.

revicon··on Thousands of Rollbar customers receiving email alerts from one user
The tweets about it keep rolling in this morning.

Apparently the alerts were supposed to be sending to https://twitter.com/lifeofkaashe.

Tough morning for the Rollbar team I would imagine.

revicon··on Rock engravings made by Homo Naledi ~300k years ago
The statement "Large variances in human populations come from different hybrid compositions" seems a particularly provocative statement. Is there a source where this comes from?
revicon··on Dell goes back on WFH pledge, forces employees to come back to the office

revicon··on How companies use dark patterns to keep you subscribed
This is why I don't subscribe to Sirius XM even though it's built into both of my car stereos. They have no way of cancelling online and there's no way I'm playing phone tag with a company to stop them charging my credit card, I'll put it off and forget about it. Every time a Sirius XM sales person calls me I tell them the same thing. Maybe if more people made this a deal breaker for them companies would change.

revicon··on The mission to discover if Jupiter’s moons support life
The last lines are the best...

But just to be sure, I got in touch with a friend of mine who works at a research reactor, and asked him what he thought would happen to you if you tried to swim in their radiation containment pool.

“In our reactor?” He thought about it for a moment. “You’d die pretty quickly, before reaching the water, from gunshot wounds.”
revicon··on EV startups from Lucid to Rivian see demand fade, supply chain issues linger
I really want to get an electric Ford Transit van but the range is just so tiny its not workable for me. Is there some technical reason EVs don't support consumers adding big battery extension packs to increase range?
revicon··on AirGradient Open Source Air Quality Monitor for CO2 and PM2.5 Measurements
I own this one as well. I’ve been pleasantly surprised at how well it works and how quickly I can see changes when it alerts me to a CO2 buildup and I go open some doors. It’s satisfying to be able to see the effect fresh air has on my environment watching their charts.

I picked this one because it also monitors Nitrogen Monoxide which gas stoves give off which many other air monitors do not test for.

I haven’t tried their IFTTT integration though, that will be next.

revicon··on Ask HN: What would be your stack if you are building an MVP today?
I mean I'm literally building an AWS lambda function that outputs HTML when it's called via API Gateway. So someone hits https://mydomain.com/mycoolpage, then the MyCoolPage AWS Lambda function is executed, does database queries or reaches out to other lambda functions I've built as microservices and then outputs <html>whatever</html>.

If you're interested, I use https://middy.js.org/ as a middleware engine for my AWS lambda functions which I find helpful.

I use the open sourced serverless framework for doing deploys https://www.serverless.com/ though I'm probably going to move to using AWS SAM in the future.

revicon··on Ask HN: What would be your stack if you are building an MVP today?
Front end: Is SEO relevant? YES: AWS Lambda generating server rendered HTML behind API Gateway. NO: Vanilla React.JS app hosted on S3

Back End: AWS Lambda behind API Gateway

Database: AWS DynamoDB

This stack will reduce down to zero usage costs when there is no traffic and will scale up to much more than I will possibly need for anything resembling an MVP with no interference required by me.

revicon··on Jailbroken iOS can't run macOS apps – I spent a week to find out why (2021)
My read is that Apple would very much like to move in the opposite direction where more people are in a locked down walled garden environment. I think if anything we’ll see macOS slowly moving more toward an iOS experience rather than enabling less lockdowns on apple devices.
