On the surface, cool idea, but seems like a huge security risk.
reversengineer··on Imperial Tyranny, Korean Humiliation
My theory is, corporate screwup. HR is responsible for tracking these things.

GitLab is like, really good. No need to put your codebase in the "cloud."

How did you arrive to the conclusion that this is anti-human? I believe this technology to be helpful, not harmful for humanity. We need to improve our food synthesis mechanisms.
reversengineer··on Why don't more people use throat mics?
Did anyone else laugh out loud after scrolling down the page a bit and seeing the actual device, which is a literal collar? The appearance of the device itself evokes hilarity. Who would willingly put that onto themselves? If your job requires you to attend meetings on-camera, what might your coworkers think if you wore such a device?

Look for exceptions to this rule in the near future as eSports continues its rise in popularity, and even becomes offered as an official school activity.
reversengineer··on When the Tab Comes Due: Challenges in the Cost Structure of Browser Tab Usage
How on earth do you manage 1000+ tabs? With some kind of add-on software, no doubt, but I would like to know your workflow.

Can you elaborate? Not everyone would see this as a bad thing. Many would argue that nuclear energy, while not perfect, is a logical next step that, solves quite effectively for the problem of demand.

Excellent idea as a proof of concept, and even beautiful in design. However one cannot help but wonder how structurally sound these materials are. Stress tests are needed to determine how well this would hold up over years of exposure to the elements before being produced en masse. For a sustainable alternative, homes made from repurposed shipping containers are a cost-effective solution for housing. They are made of weather-resistant Steel which, while not rust-proof, will not rot. A single unit can be kitted out and furnished for as little as $25,000, and yields 300+ square feet of space, comparable to a smaller studio apartment. Check out the YouTube Channel "Containing Luxury" which illustrates the sustainability of Container Homes and demonstrates them as a solution to several housing issues: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t_sclvzg9dM
reversengineer··on Ask HN: How would you store 10PB of data for your startup today?
To be fair, purchasing and hosting even the most basic mirrored RAID array of that scale comes to well over half a million for the disks alone. Then you need to manage them.

reversengineer··on India will overtake the US economy by 2030
PPP is and always will be a garbage metric. Don't compare my Pepperidge Farm 15-Grain bread, sold for $3 a loaf at the supermarket with steamed buns sold for ¥1 each on the street.
reversengineer··on Kenyans Say Chinese Investment Brings Racism and Discrimination (2018)
>With the exception of Guangdong and Hong Kong, you aren’t going to find many TV stations or newspapers that are carrying content in non-Mandarin Chinese.

Just a quick clarification: Mandarin is a spoken form of Chinese, and therefore cannot be "printed" in a newspaper. In Guangdong, the newspapers are printed in simplified Chinese characters. In Hong Kong, the newspapers are printed in traditional Chinese characters.

reversengineer··on Ditching the MacBook Pro for a MacBook Air
Many people would describe an hour's difference to be a "significant" change, especially when a scale of around 10 hours total battery life is being considered.
reversengineer··on DEF CON report on vulnerabilities in US election infrastructure [pdf]
It is an absolute farce that there are electronic voting machines in use which are closed-source.
reversengineer··on College Rejection Threat Highlights Social Credit Blacklists
This story is totally taken out of context. The rejection was from a PRIVATE university and based on an inability to pay past loans. This is totally within scope of reasonableness.
