reubeniv··on Uber loses licence to operate in London, will still operate while appealing
hopefully it gets resolved, Uber is much more convenient than traditional taxis, I love that you pay via the app and know the route you're taking, however the issue around unauthorised drivers using regular drivers' profiles is worrying
reubeniv··on To hire neurodiverse workers, one firm got rid of job interviews
the douchebag one is a strange one unless you're going for management :/ where do you see yourself in 5 years though seems a reasonable question; do you want to lead a team, be certified in something, gain experience in x, etc, just pick a career goal from the hat surely
reubeniv··on Suicide Data Reveal New Intervention Spots, Such as Motels and Animal Shelters
> to try to find comfort That's what I jumped to as well, the reality really is heartbreaking
reubeniv··on Cities Where Job Growth Is Outpacing New Homes
would be great for any country whos cities can achieve this, in terms of wealth distribution etc
reubeniv··on Questions to ask a company during a job interview
I normally ask what opportunities for growth exist, eg training/certs/online courses etc, and what they like about the company, can normally tell if they like the job/you by how enthusiastic they answer or whether it comes across as scripted
reubeniv··on NSA Official: We Need to Prepare for the Future of War
It's quite a scary one, drone swarms that outmatch humans by a huge degree might cause the losing side to surrender before a human life is lost, but they could also massacre the losing sides, satellites and communications of all sides are also likely go, then of course there's still nuclear armageddon
reubeniv··on No-deal Brexit opponents defeat government
Technically it can pass a short bill that requires just a majority, but it then has to go through lords and is open to amendments https://www.instituteforgovernment.org.uk/explainers/early-e...
reubeniv··on Why Is Joe Rogan So Popular?
haha yeah he's pretty big, I first heard about him through his Jordan Peterson interviews, but he's pretty good. He's had sports nutritionists on both for and against keto etc, Alex Jones was hilarious and eye opening, so was Tom Delongue (the guy is nuts), James Damore, a number of comedians, Kevin Smith was great, and yeah he just lets them talk, you're free to form your own opinions, it's kinda refreshing and nice to fall asleep to when most youtube vids (even the talky ones) are shrinking to ~10 minutes.
reubeniv··on Deadly stupidity during Aeroflot flight 1492 emergency evacuation
Reading a BBC piece on it, it looks like the rear emergency doors were stuck also https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-europe-48175029
reubeniv··on Coffee Cups Are Next
seconded, it's pretty common in the UK to grab a take-out coffee too. When I worked in a bigger city it was sometimes a bit of a treat occasionally to grab one on the way to the office.
reubeniv··on An open-source collection of interview questions
You'd think that, but some legacy systems might not have it, I don't want to name and shame, but a lot of our code is on an IBM Series i (used to be called as400?) and the source control for it is basically manually adding a comment with the ticket number next to any changes - unsurprisingly they're a bit coy about the technologies used in interviews and target people fresh out of uni who don't know any better, my recruiter told me it was a Java role lol
reubeniv··on Animating URLs with JavaScript and Emojis
It blew my mind, then I tried to hit 'back' and now I understand why nobody does it (yet) :P
reubeniv··on Brexit – where now? The flow diagrams
2/3 majority wouldn't have made a difference, the referendum wasn't on leaving, it was on staying, the option supporting the motion on the ballot got less than half the votes so it was agreed by parliament we should leave, which seems reasonable and it's shocking govt made such a mess of it.
reubeniv··on Brexit – where now? The flow diagrams
would you? citizens rights have been secured here regardless of outcome, no EU citizens will to leave the UK
reubeniv··on German Data Privacy Commissioner Says Article 13 Inevitably Leads to Filters
I'm not sure this is MEPs doing, laws are made by the council I think, and then voted on by MEPs
reubeniv··on EU and Japan create world's biggest free trade zone
Not strictly true again, it's not a FTA but there exists a trade deal in some form and the UK just signed with Australia - https://www.gov.uk/government/news/uk-and-australia-agree-co...
reubeniv··on EU and Japan create world's biggest free trade zone
That's not strictly true, I know a few countries have agreed to roll over the deals the have with the EU over to the UK, not all have been signed and (not a great comfort) the only ones I know of that have (so far) are Isreal and (I think?) Australia
reubeniv··on Parmigiano-Reggiano: Italy's 'practically perfect' food
does the PDO actually guarantee quality? It guarantees it's made in a particular region, and the case for it is that certain ingredients are only available in that region but, for example, I often buy own-brand 'Italian-style hard cheese', which is effectively the same, it's just made outside of Italy so can't share the name.

Call me cynical, DPOs seem abused and more about protecting regional industries as apposed to guaranteeing quality for consumers.

reubeniv··on We should replace Facebook with personal websites
Essentially how MySpace used to work?
reubeniv··on Why Do Hospitals Hate Sleep So Much?
I'd think so, if you're up against enough people willing to sacrifice sleep/social lives to get a job/project done faster
reubeniv··on Ads just work, no matter what you think
Possibly projecting here, but I think adverts work, but by giving people a push towards something they already wanted/thought, more taking advantage of our lack of impulse control and a tendency to lean towards confirmation bias, I don't think they change minds or brainwash people like it's sometimes implied.
reubeniv··on As women have more equal opportunity, the more their preferences differ from men
I don't think it should need to adjust as this is what it's trying to observe, it's specifically taking into account the levels of social equality. If cultural 'pushing' played a bigger part, you'd expect the differences to be greater in less egalitarian countries, but instead we see the opposite.
reubeniv··on Dialectics of Darkness: On “The Myth of Disenchantment”
Kinda how I see it, like a ballet for boys kinda thing
reubeniv··on Ask HN: Is there a modern “power on to basic” computer, for kids to learn on?
An actual commodore64 is still an option

https://www.amazon.co.uk/Koch-International-242390-THEC64-Mi...

The mini boots straight to basic still I understand

Otherwise I'd recommend some free software and some tutorials, Udemy has a very good C# Unity course for example that can often be found at ~$/£10

reubeniv··on Universal Basic Income Is Silicon Valley’s Latest Scam
UBI sounds great, I even caught myself thinking how good it'd be, I'd only need a small amount saved and I can take a year out and focus on personal projects, which would be amazing, and then I thought I'm not special, lots of other people probably have the same idea, and if enough people act on it in UBI will fail horribly, which is why I don't think it'll work, but I guess we'll see.
reubeniv··on Dozens of Companies Are Using Facebook to Exclude Older Workers From Job Ads
Depends, it's not technically illegal if it's done to promote numbers of people in another protected group
reubeniv··on Disney to Acquire Twenty-First Century Fox
You're completely right, I got arts and film mixed up
reubeniv··on Disney to Acquire Twenty-First Century Fox
Oh it's crazy how much stuff Disney can pull off Netflix, I don't know if they will, because it's in their interest to have some stuff accessible over more than one place, but they own ABC (Lost, Castle, Firefly, etc), ESPN, Marvel, LucasArts, now Fox and their assets, not to mention they distribute on behalf of many publishers (Dreamworks for example), they would probably clear more than half of Netflix's content if they pulled everything.
reubeniv··on Laptops Are Great, But Not During a Lecture or a Meeting
I think often underrated is the value of knowing what you need to learn, which lectures certainly help with imho.
reubeniv··on AI-controlled brain implants for mood disorders tested in people
