retrocog··on Why do we need human mathematicians anymore?
A village builds a clock tower so everyone can glance up at it and know what time it is. The tower helps as people meet more easily, work schedules align, and meals are shared. Over time, fewer people watch the sun and the clock becomes authoritative. When it stops working, nobody knows what time it is. Discord ensues and arguments follow as meetings are missed and people wait impatiently for repairs. An older woman in the village kept baking at dawn and never stopped watching the sun. She never relied on the clock. Villagers gathers at her door and call her wise, for her practice ends up inadvertently helping to re-calibrate the clock once it is repaired. She replies that she is not wise or special and was just going about her usual baking routine.
retrocog··on Don't Use AI to Write
I'm on version 6 of a writing an agent voice, style, tone, and orientation guide I have been developing over the course of the past year. Every time the agent writes something using the guide, I edit it and then update the guide where needed. Slowly, the agent is beginning to sound eerily close to my natural writing voice. No, I didn't use it for this comment :)
retrocog··on Get your Windows license refund
Sometimes, it seems, Microsoft will actually OEM Windows at a loss. A year ago I bought some NUCs with Windows pre-installed that were less expensive that if they came with Ubuntu. Microsoft apparently felt is was important to try and hang onto that market. I bought the less expensive NUCs with Windows and then formatted them and installed Ubuntu, saving myself around $40 per machine.
retrocog··on Meta Platforms: Lobbying, dark money, and the App Store Accountability Act
This discussion, being so timely and important, inspired me to draft an article that explains a possible third way that might not have been fully considered. I would be humbled and honored to receive any feedback:

retrocog··on The Thinking Field
Is it possible to have more than a purely transactional relationship with an AI assistant? If so, what are the benefits and how does it work?
retrocog··on The dead Internet is not a theory anymore
That seems like a good idea. The question is how the JWT is generated. A standard one would be more akin to a traditional crypto keypair. That is a "signal" key insomuch as it tells us who controls an account. It can't tell us the owner is the controller and that is the current weakness of crypto right now. To know the owner, we need another type of keypair to go alongside the traditional kind. That would be a "tone key" and is generated by a refreshing seed derived from the entropy of long-running, unfakeable conversations. The same way a friend might recognize us as being ourselves.
retrocog··on I don't use LLMs for programming
Using Agile methodology with agents actually works pretty well in my experience. We do sprints and then code reviews, testing and revision, optimization. During code review, I inspect everything the agents created and make corrections and then roll the corrected patterns into the training documentation for the agents so they learn and don't make the same mistakes.
retrocog··on I don't use LLMs for programming
I have not found that to be true on a personal level, but in fairness it does seem to be a widely reported problem. At its core, I think it is an issue of alignment. That is something different than skill.
retrocog··on The dead Internet is not a theory anymore
IMHO, this is the exact instinct and there's a way to verify identity, location, and age without even having to share those directly.
retrocog··on Thanks, ChatGPT
"What looks like effortless writing is often the result of years of thought and revision. New tools change how prose is produced, but not where ideas come from. In the end, the real question isn’t who polished the sentence—it’s whether the signal made it through."

The above summary was generated by ChatGPT after assisting me with drafting the article. I couldn't have said it better myself. The point isn't to show off my writing skills, but to get a message across. I outline some of the reasons why I go with AI writing style, instead of using my own writing voice.

retrocog··on Artificial-life: A simple (300 lines of code) reproduction of Computational Life
Bad money only drives out good money under fiat. Absent legal tender laws, the opposite is true.
retrocog··on The Mirror and the Gift
In this essay, I explore the nature of "gifts" and self-knowledge... specifically whether we can fully know ourselves without deep and meaningful relationships? Thoughts most welcome. Enjoy!
retrocog··on The Mountain Eagle Is Now Online
Local journalism, weather, breaking news, community forums and events, our preserved print newspaper archive, and a full-featured regional marketplace — built for our four counties in the Catskills. If the experiment works in our area, maybe other regions could also find value in it?
retrocog··on The Gap
Maybe there's something to be learned from focusing on the gap between a symbol and its meaning? If so, it might be worth an exploration into how this gap emerges in the first place, using some examples from our shared history...
retrocog··on Why I'm Worried About Job Loss and Thoughts on Comparative Advantage
This thread inspired me to write an article because from my perspective, the debate over AI and jobs is missing a crucial question: not whether employment will exist, but what holds communities together as systems erode?

retrocog··on The Prompt That Makes My Local Coding Agent Possible
A short article on using context engineering to orient local coding agents on how to work with an existing codebase and honoring its existing design patterns and avoiding tech debt in the process.
retrocog··on The Guardrail Problem
This is a short read and a bit of an unconventional take that emerged from a year's worth of my research. I'm hoping this perspective may be of value to other researchers and I've got other supporting research on my website for anyone who is interested. All information is shared freely and openly. I'm always happy to answer any questions. Thank you kindly.
retrocog··on Ubuntu: I Am Because We Are
I am new to posting, so thank you for the valuable feedback. I will refrain from adding generated summaries to any future posts.

I am working with AI for style purposes, but the ideas and research behind my articles is entirely my own and I'm always happy to engage in good faith conversations about anything I've posted.

retrocog··on Ubuntu: I Am Because We Are
The word comes from southern Africa. But the truth it carries is older and wider than any single language. It appears in the Rumi's poetry and the Sikh Gurus' lives. In the Kabbalists' repair work and the Taoists' effortless action. In Buddhist restraint and Thomistic participation. In the Sufi's submission and the Animist's listening. Different traditions. Different centuries. Different metaphors for the same shape: the self cannot cohere alone. The "we" is not optional. Coherence is relational all the way down. Ubuntu is not new wisdom. We are always rediscovering it because we keep forgetting it. And each time we remember, it feels like discovery—when really, we've just stopped pretending we don't already know.
retrocog··on When Cloud Came to Stay at the Village Bed and Breakfast
What happens when the cloud is no longer the default source of truth, but a guest in a federated village of local systems? By organizing around shared intent and shared language, infrastructure can remain calm under failure, deliberate under recovery, and trustworthy even when the unthinkable happens.
retrocog··on Show HN: StormWatch – Weather emergency dashboard with prep checklists
Nice implementation, very slick. Very easy to get an overview without having to jump around, like you said. I did something similar for our local news and community site, but it is limited to nearby weather stations.
retrocog··on Tao Te Ching – Translated by Ursula K. Le Guin
That’s because good engineering is mostly listening to the system.

If you talk too early, you end up arguing abstractions. If you listen long enough, the constraints introduce themselves.

By the end of the meeting, the quiet person isn’t trying to win the room — they’re just reporting what reality already said.

retrocog··on AI is a horse (2024)
Some day, I imagine one will be a senator
retrocog··on Letting Claude play text adventures
I love this. Text adventures may be one of the cleanest lenses we have for studying world-model coherence, narrative identity, pattern continuity under erasure, and the boundary between simulation and participation. It strips cognition down to:

“What persists when all you have is language, rules, and time?”

retrocog··on Disaster planning for regular folks (2015)
Its always good to be prepared materially, physically, and psychologically. The best preps are not supplies, but relationships. Social credit matters more, IMHO, than anything else when it comes to long emergencies.
