retonom··on Making Emacs Popular Again
Who cares about popularity? It often brings more trouble than anything. Emacs is a gem and will probably stay like that for decades to come.

The only thing I wonder about is how it is possible that Stallman seems to have never heard about org-mode which is one of the main reasons I use Emacs and I don't think there exists anything that even comes close.

I manage my todos with org-mode, generate chord sheets of my songs and even produce my website from org files.

retonom··on Ask HN: What is the best way to learn Lisp in 2020?
I'd say via Emacs is the easiest way. You can use org-mode as well which is the best (most customizable and individual) TODO solution that exist IMO. When you want to adapt Emacs to your workflow you are kind of forced to learn Lisp and once you have learned the basics you may be seeing yourself writing Emacs packages even. Progress with learning Clojure from there.
retonom··on GNU Users Who Have Never Heard of GNU (2006)
I like this description why people should mention GNU. With "open source software" or "Linux" or "Ubuntu" there are no moral implications, nothing to stand for except that it should do the job.

But GNU is different. The idea is to emphasize sharing and freedom and community.

In a world that is driven almost only by profit margins we do well to have some ideals.

GNU has enabled Linux and Ubuntu to come to life. Without GNU there wouldn't be any Linux as we know it today.

Also Torvalds had adopted the GNU GPL (what MS called the "cancer") for the kernel. Who knows where we would be if that wouldn't have been the case.

not it's not just a backup. I backup my vault of course.

it's:

1. a way to access most of my passwords from everywhere even when I don't have access to the vault 2. a way to access most of my passwords even when all of my vault copies and backups are destroyed

how in the world is this serverless?
retonom··on Lesspass – open-source stateless password manager
I also found that having one master password like that is probably not so clever. But who is saying that you have to use the three input fields like this? I came up with my own system. So I'm kind of using lesspass now as a password generator. The generated password I save in keepassxc along with the rest of the information. In most cases I don't need to consult the vault and can generate the password on the fly but I'm not bound to lesspass at all. So in case I should lose access to the vault I can still log into most sites.
retonom··on Tips for the depressed
good question. of course I got older which helped in bringing the inhibitions down which made me more aware of myself and of my own feelings. then going after those feelings and trying to figure out what they mean I slowly discovered what was behind them.

for example, one day I was in a course and I felt miserable even before I was there. then suddenly it dawned on me that this is my aversion to the whole thing. it's not rational but irrational. once I knew what was going on the bad feeling went away quite quickly when as before I'd just suffer without end.

before I was helpless, now when a negative feeling comes I try to guess what it could mean and often I find the answer quite quickly. once the source is identified, the bad feeling dissolves and I'm back to normal.

and another important factor was that I started trying to live by the golden rule: "do unto others as you would have them do to you". the problem was that not to do this often caused a lot of the confusion in my life and my feelings. I don't think it would have been possible to figure it out while I was in this chaos caused by not following the golden rule.

oh yeah, and the last thing that helped a lot is that I stopped going to therapists and took on responsibility, not relying on what others say about how I feel.

retonom··on Tips for the depressed
it's not so hard when you know how. so when a person looks at you and you feel insecure the normal reaction would be to look away. now just don't look away being conscious of this feeling that makes you want to look away. the key to overcome social phobia is body language. change your body language and the feeling will follow and slowly the phobia will get less and less. then after enough practice you become more and more open and inviting. people will start to like you because you seem to be an easy going guy always ready to talk, share and laugh. then being in company will not be a burden anymore but something to enjoy. it is so different now. I was so miserable because of this and couldn't enjoy fellowship for more than 20 years.
retonom··on Tips for the depressed
I have struggled with "depression" for decades. Now I'm healed. I went to countless psychiatrists, took drugs and everything. I didn't really help much. I told them I feel bad, they labeled me "depressive" without trying to find out what is really going on. In the the end I had to find it out by myself. The depression was just a symptom. The main cause of it was a social phobia. None of the therapists ever addressed this. Other factors: unforgiveness and my own frustration that I wasn't aware of in many situations. So I started peeling off all these layers. I just didn't really know myself, was so full of inhibitions.

Often depression isn't something you should be afraid of. Neither is it something that you just "have" like a sickness. There may be reasons for the depression and maybe you can dig them out.

I just skimmed the article but what I've read seems to be how to cope with depression, not how to address the underlying issues. Better try to find out where it comes from, if possible.

I'd say you brought your takeaway along already, i.e. your conviction on how the world operates - and you "took it away" again since all that we can "discover" is usually a subset of what we believe already.
retonom··on The new Microsoft Edge is out of preview
It's nice to see MS pushing for tracking protection as well. Firefox now takes the lead on privacy issues. Google will try to hold it off as not to hurt their own business. People will eventually migrate away from Chrome because of this and the tracking/ad business will go down. Now is a good time to do some thinking if you're in the online tracking and/or ad business.
retonom··on Firefox 71
Well, actually it was introduced after Chrome switched to this same model. So it looked like Chrome is advancing faster because they released a new major version every few weeks and it got more press. I suppose that's why they really switched. If it would be just a matter of the management system you'd better adapt the system instead of version numbers. Anyway, after so many "major" releases the press has died down. So what we have now is version numbers that are quite meaningless because you can't pin major changes in the architecure to version numbers anymore.

I agree, what I was getting at was that requiring detailed information upfront is going to give you even less reports, so it is advisable to get the information you need afterwards as I explained here:

retonom··on They Might Never Tell You It’s Broken
yeah, I understand the practical side of the problem and is certainly not easy as you say. as for issue templates, reporting guidelines etc., they make it even less likely that people report a problem. as the article mentions, even on a project that encouraged feedback it was still not reported that it doesn't run on the mac. so my takeaway is that there shouldn't be any guidelines for issue reporting if someone wants to catch even a glimpse of the real issues. I'd say there should be a good process in line that deals with the issues and asks for necessary information afterwards, so potential reporters are not driven away by issue requirements. knowing this I'd say projects that have issue guidelines hurt themselves in the end.

and then consider the typical project on Github which makes it intentionally hard to open up an issue, like with a template where you need answer 10 questions right down to your underpants size...

Another approach that leads to similar results: try to apply the Golden Rule to your life...

"do unto others what you would have them done to you"

Then in every situation try to think how you would want to be treated or how you would want to be spoken to and behave like that to the other person. It isn't as hard as one might think and there's not much theory to learn, only one has to meditate on this, what it means exactly applied to all areas of life.
