res0nat0r··on TikTok is back in the App Store
I think their point is the current GOP is behaving like they're members of a dictatorship in that they won't speak out or against their dear leader and allow him to easily break laws daily which they would have impeached Biden for in an instant, and have completely given up their job of governing in service to the leader.

Sure the USA is still a two party system right now, but unless something completely drastic happens between now and four years from now, I fully expect Trump to say "the Constitution says a POTUS can only serve two consecutive terms", and he won't leave office and the GOP will be completely fine with that.

res0nat0r··on Mp3tag – Universal Tag Editor
I highly recommend Musicbrainz Picard: https://picard.musicbrainz.org/

It will match against the Musicbrainz database and will acoustically ID your files, so the tags can be completely wrong and it can ID the song from it's sound fingerprint. Just dump folders of albums into the client, it will group and sort things and ID them. It works great.

res0nat0r··on Sprint, T-Mobile Merger Killed Wireless Price Competition in U.S.
I'm looking to switch to Visible here soon after being on Google Fi for many years. Just looks like a cheaper rebranded Verizon to me, and has all the features I would need for a cheap price.

Good book. Have the hardcover on my bookshelf. Not a fan the cover art design though.
res0nat0r··on Understanding AWS End of Service Life Is a Key FinOps Responsibility
We just got emails yesterday about the EKS price increase. It's another reason we're trying to move the main app to the vendors SaaS because I don't have enough time and resources to be a fulltime k8s admin. The ecosystem moves way too fast and upgrades/deprecation happens way too quickly to keep up and to have time test / plan / rollout proper upgrades without breaking our critical production workloads.
res0nat0r··on FBI Opens Criminal Investigation into Baltimore Bridge Collapse
According to WaPo:

res0nat0r··on Vultr is now claiming full perpetual commercial rights over all hosted content
This verbiage is standard for almost all internet/service providers, it's language to allow them to display your content on their behalf.
res0nat0r··on Gemma: New Open Models
Isn't this just lawyer speak for "we update our model a lot, and we've never signed off on saying we're going to support every previous release we've ever published, and may turn them off at any time, don't complain about it when we do."
res0nat0r··on SSDs have become fast, except in the cloud
Your EC2 instance with instance-store storage when stopped can be launched on any other random host in the AZ when you power it back on. Since your rootdisk is an EBS volume attached across the network, so when you start your instance back up you're going to be launched likely somewhere else with an empty slot, and empty local-storage. This is why there is always a disclaimer that this local storage is ephemeral and don't count on it being around long-term.
res0nat0r··on Plastics producers deceived public about recycling, report reveals
Frontline did a whole episode about this about four years ago. Sure the plastic container holding your strawberries has a recycling symbol on it with a number 3 in the middle, but there may be only one facility in the entire state or region who can process that type of material. Since most can’t, it goes in the trash.

res0nat0r··on Duplicity: Encrypted bandwidth-efficient backup
The major issue out of the box vs any deduping backup software is that S3 doesnt support any deduplication. If you move or rename a 15GB file you're going to have to completely upload it again and also store a second copy and pay for it until your S3 bucket policy purges the previously uploaded file you've deleted. Also aws s3 sync is much slower since it has to iterate over all of the files to see if their size/timestamp has changed. Something like borgbackup is much faster as it uses smarter caching to skip unchanged directories etc.

res0nat0r··on Beeper Mini is back
Thats the entire point of the Apple ecosystem. They want to control the entire user experience end to end, and it is why many people like Apple products so much.
res0nat0r··on Beeper Mini is back
They're either going to keep getting their access cut, or sued into bankruptcy. You can't really piggyback off another companies service in violation of their TOS without things working out poorly for you IMO.
res0nat0r··on Former Labor Secretary Found What Work Is Like Now (2022)
> Using tips as a substitute for paying a living wage needs to be eliminated everywhere, but I especially don't blame people for not realizing that a movie theater of all places is playing that game.

Many bartenders and servers, especially in high end restaurants would actively be against this policy. Mostly because these folks can earn $300-500 a night, and moving to some low wage salary would never compete with this.

res0nat0r··on Las Vegas Sphere reports $98.4M loss; CFO quits
You can't book an event of any decent size in the USA without it being a required Ticketmaster venue, so unfortunately if you want to see any reasonably popular artist or a show at a big venue they are your only option.
res0nat0r··on The housing market is starting to crack – Sellers are cutting prices
I'm guessing that is the case. Condos next door that cost $210k before covid now in the exact same spot three years alter asking for $630k is probably making people ask questions about the market.
res0nat0r··on I like gentoo's package deprecation process
I think a lot of the reason why I don't use Gentoo anymore is because the time I have to waste when I have to compile Chrome from scratch and wait two hours vs. just installing a precompiled .deb archive. :)
res0nat0r··on What is the Demoscene? An interview
Thanks! These look great.
res0nat0r··on Google Cloud Spanner is now half the cost of Amazon DynamoDB
I don't think it's really relevant to compare plain Postgres to Spanner, most folks have no need for something like this. It is made for folks who need to do millions of ACID type transactions a second/minute from all over the globe, and have a globally consistent database at all times.

There's a reason why Google installed and built their own atomic clocks and put them in their datacenters, it is to facilitate global timekeeping for this type of services. Most likely 99.9% of the time this type of database is overkill, and also likely way more expensive than you need.

res0nat0r··on Homes “unaffordable” in 99% of nation for average American
Another thing to consider is that many fully remote people don't want to live in the middle of nowhere or in a dead city with no services.

I've been fully remote for 10+ years and still only live in large metro areas mostly because I couldn't handle living in a large house in the middle of nowhere with nothing to do and no one to interact with.

res0nat0r··on AWS Customers Cannot Escape IPv4

res0nat0r··on Warner Bros. CFO Thinks You Deadbeats Have Been on a Free Ride for Way Too Long
This was always going to be the natural outcome. Each company knows that the IP they own is key, and why Netflix started making originals vs. having to constantly pay higher prices everytime Friends was set to be renewed.

Now each service wants to own and control their own content and we have just a new version of cable tv that is streaming based, with less commercials, but is going to cost more overall due to lack of ad revenue subsidies.

res0nat0r··on Appeals court rules White House likely overstepped 1st Amendment on social media
The Fifth Circuit really isn't credible currently as they just make up rules as they go along depending on if it fits the politics they like. This sums it up nicely:

https://twitter.com/JamesSurowiecki/status/17005123233188249...

> The Fifth Circuit Court has now held that it's unconstitutional for the federal govt to influence platforms' moderation decisions, while also holding it's constitutional for Texas to compel platforms to leave up content they want to take down. Impossible to square that circle.

res0nat0r··on OpenTF repository is now public
Honestly, I think when it comes to the large companies I've worked for, they care more than anything else revolves around "support". 15+ years ago the my previous company was all Sun Microsystems based, owned millions of dollars in 880s, 6800s and even an E10K. They said Linux was off limits because they couldn't blame/call anyone when they needed "support", even when Redhat was already around.

Eventually they saw the writing on the wall and moved to Linux systems and replaced all of the hardware, and have an enterprise RHEL subscription that we could call when needed.

I think the story is going to be the same with the current company, mainly "who can we blame if there is a security incident, or get me a Hashicorp person on the phone if we have some kind of Terraform related production issue." Having this in place seems to matter more than everything else honestly.

res0nat0r··on OpenTF repository is now public
I suspect this project is going to consist of a very loud minority of folks. I'm working for a very large company right now and they've been mandating us to move all of our TF code to Terraform Cloud for the last year, and I've not heard a peep about this licensing issue. I'm assuming they're going full steam ahead and don't care about this issue. As long as the TF Cloud service is easy to use, still a SaaS so it's TF's problem vs the companies, and they allow a robust login / access pattern via OAuth / SAML, all is well.
res0nat0r··on Farewell EC2-Classic, it’s been swell
Chef has been dying for a long time and was beaten to death when the company was bought by some VC and everyone was fired a couple of years ago. I can understand why the service is going away as Chef and Puppet are not exactly gaining marketshare.

AWS rarely retires services and when they do they pretty much give months/year(s) worth of notice before forcing you to migrate which is very nice.

res0nat0r··on Show HN: Flake schemas – teaching Nix about your flake outputs
I'm using NixOS again after installing it years ago and enjoying it, but I still have a real hard time understanding just how to somehow implement or use a flake, or create a useful new package with it that isn't in the nixpkgs repo already.

I still find much of the syntax incredibly confusing and hard to just get simple concrete self contained examples, or without worrying if this is intermingled with some non flake code somewhere that isn't compatible.

I've bumped a few nix packages via github PR's and can hack around a bit with existing things I see upstream, but knowing how to do everything is still confusing.

I guess I need to sit down and read all of https://zero-to-nix.com/ and see if there is anything I'm missing.

res0nat0r··on Cleaning Up Dead Bodies in AWS IAM
I think correctly configuring nscd should prevent this, ie it should cache some of these name lookups for a period of time. As long as it is properly setup for LDAP to hook into it.
