repler··on America’s skepticism toward the first automobiles (1930)
Alexander Winton sounds like a fascinating person! It’s a shame he doesn’t seem to have written an autobiography.

Aside from this Saturday Evening Post contribution, and the biography “Famous but forgotten: The story of Alexander Winton, automotive pioneer and industrialist”, there doesn’t seem to be much else to read about the man.

Anybody find anything else?

repler··on Rodney Brooks on GPT-4
yes. I remember boomers shitting on Wikipedia around 2004, but fast forward to present day and the same people would cite it.

The societal factors you mention are due to - unfortunately - freedom.

Humans are innately horrible.

Freedom also means freedom to be horrible.

Unfortunately.

repler··on Apple Card’s new high-yield Savings account is now available, offering a 4.15 p
No, you can add money directly to it from another bank account - such as the one you pay your apple card bill with.

You can also transfer your current rewards balance to the savings account.

repler··on SpaceX moves Starship to launch site, and liftoff could be just days away
This is actually a really great point. Practically speaking, the internet "lives" on Earth and the communication latency grows the further away from it you travel.

24 minutes between Earth and Mars isn't horrible (although that is a 48 minute round trip to get an answer) but if people were living in a colony then even the current generation of LLM AIs could significantly improve daily life.

repler··on ElonJet Is Now Suspended
Yes, but I’d like to be able to do my daily commute full EV and that is closer to 80 miles round trip.

Then for longer trips we have the convenience of not needing to charge.

repler··on ElonJet Is Now Suspended
What’s the EV range?

I’ve never seen anything over 50 miles, but I wish some manufacturer could take a PHEV to 100 mile range and I’d snap that up in a heartbeat.

As a parent of a toddler, these are also great because you can literally grab one for $1.99 and the kid is both thrilled to get it and plays with it for days/weeks.

No other toy even comes close to that level of value.

And no annoying tv shows, characters, etc etc etc.

repler··on Physical buttons outperform touchscreens in new cars, test finds
I can understand where you're coming from, but compared to the vehicles I own now my 98 TJ seems "no frills".

The soft top folded down pretty nicely. The rear seat could also fold down, as did the windshield. The half doors were still removable, and there were still only 2 of them.

It was a manual transmission but had A/C. The heater had two settings: "lava" and "off" :D

repler··on Tell HN: After 10 years of experiments, custom username emails receive no spam
Is this not what “+” addresses are for?

Many email providers automatically create a folder with the “plus” name.

For example: youremail+company@yourdomain.com

Creates a folder named “company” and puts those received emails into it.

repler··on Datadog dashboard for the Texas power grid
Okay, sorry, not an expert on this.

Why do you think someone posted the dashboard link that was already shared over a year ago? Is ERCOT having issues this month? What is the cause of the issues?

I am legitimately asking. I don't know, so that's the only recent link I was able to find.

repler··on Datadog dashboard for the Texas power grid
I noted that as well, but it did give context for why it’s worth looking at this data right now.

For me it was relevant to answer “oh that interesting, someone posted this ERCOT data I wonder what’s going this week”

Kind of weird my comment was downvoted so heavily - but whatever. The dashboard was posted to Reddit over a year ago during DIFFERENT issues for ERCOT so it seemed relevant to find out what’s going on this time around.

It looks like this project happened at the early days of COVID.

There could be dozens of reasons for the ways this played out on the agency side of things.

You could very well have kicked this off a year earlier or a year later and gotten different results.
