(this is sarcasm, it's supposed to be funny, I love you SREs)
Generally speaking you want to focus on more than raw technical skill. It's far more important that you align on expectations, values, etc. than it is to hire the world's greatest developer.
Most importantly: pay them to work on a small project before tackling your MVP. You don't want to get involved with someone on a big project only to find out the person is difficult to work with.
What our product does is take your anonymized profile, present it to companies, and ask them if they're interested. If they are, you may then decline, ask questions directly while staying anonymous, or opt in to a conversation with them without even filling out an application.
We were interviewing developers for a project and kept hearing how much they hated looking for a new job. We dug into why and it was usually because they couldn't find companies with the culture and work environment they wanted. They either had to invest a ton of time into research or trust a recruiter.
Our tool is different because it matches you with companies who have the culture and work environment you want. And, it skips the black hole that is the modern job application by having companies pitch you.
Privacy is very important to us and we built this so that you have complete control of when you share your personal info. You can anonymously ask interested engineering teams questions before you share anything.
Feedback requested: 1. Would you use this? 2. What are we missing when it comes to culture and dev environment?
So what can you do? You show off what makes you different, whether it's cool technology, family friendliness, remote work, etc.
However, remote part-time does exist! If you're a frontend developer looking to fill a few extra hours on contract feel free to reach out - my email is in my profile.
I haven’t tried the Bose ones that are the consensus best, but somehow I doubt they’re 6x better.
Coincidentally, the app itself could be used to find a cofounder. It's how I met mine.
Looking for part-time frontend developer to do pixel pushing for our Angular 2/Bootstrap app and web site.
Questions, applications, etc. to jeremy@shepherd.com, please.
Inspired by Cal Newport’s book “Deep Work”, our app crunches 12 months of calendar data and shows you how much time you have for deep work and shallow work, how much of your life is spent in meetings, and compares you to the average inside your company and globally.
Example report here: https://app.shepherd.com/personal-report/sample/pages/my-wor...
Why did we build this? We loved Cal Newport’s book ‘Deep Work’ and we wanted to try to estimate how much time people have for deep work, shallow work, and meetings. Plus show how they compare to other makers/managers inside their company and globally.
How does it work? We do a read only connection to your calendar API and crunch 12 months of data and summarize the results for you.
What do we use the anonymized data for? Your data is never sold or shared. We use the anonymized data to show job seekers what a typical day is like for an engineer at different companies. We are hoping to ship that feature after we get enough data in a few weeks.
Happy to answer any questions you might have!

hey everybody, I spotted the problem! I'll keep an eye on my mailbox for the giant consulting fee that I assume is enroute.
People > cars, always.
My cofounder and I didn't know each other at the outset we worked together for 6 months before deciding to commit full time and draw up paperwork, etc.
Disclaimer: I created it and that's how I found my cofounder.
- Fixed costs for hiring for PT and FT are the same, but the company gets more output for FT, so they focus on that
- Similarly, external recruiters who take a % of salary get paid much less for the same amount of work, so you're not worth it to them
- Fragile processes require lots of interaction. Having someone unavailable slows down the team
- PT employees are perceived as less committed. Enough ink has been spilled about companies wanting dedicated people, so I'll leave that one alone
