remotecool··on Budapest declares climate emergency, teases carbon-neutrality
Yes, it should be an excuse and a reference. If the US is going to ruin its economy by being forced off of fossil fuels, other countries shouldn't be able to use it as an advantage to take power and continue to ruin the environment.
remotecool··on Budapest declares climate emergency, teases carbon-neutrality
We can still produce less carbon emissions without being in the agreement.

The US is only 20% of total C02 output. Even if it were 0, China and India are still ruining the climate and the Paris accords didn't stop this.

Per-capita doesn't matter. Reality doesn't care about fairness.

remotecool··on From Deadspin to picket lines, a moral workplace is 2020’s stealth issue
The GM strikes devastated many of the local suppliers, which were forced to layoff employees. Some people never got their jobs back and these businesses still haven't recovered.

One of the main complaints is that they don't want GM to sell more electric cars.

The reason is that it requires a different set of skills (more engineering/software and less blue-collar mechanic work).

Instead of the unions educating their members and helping them transition to a new position, they instead strike and use mob tactics to prevent advancements in technology.

remotecool··on A New California Privacy Law Could Affect Every U.S. Business–Will You Be Ready?
It's not a federal regulation, so I'm still not sure how they will go after businesses not in California.

The result will be businesses leaving california.

Recommending a business get an office and hire multiple people for the sole purpose of dealing with these draconian regulations is ridiculous.

remotecool··on Former Twitter Employees Charged with Spying for Saudi Arabia
This happened to me for awhile too. I think people that disagreed with you on a previous post are using bots to downvote you.
remotecool··on How to Buy Drugs
It works so well with guns.
remotecool··on Four Day Workweek Tech Jobs?
Why not start consulting/contracting on a project basis? You can set your own hours and try out the four day work week.

In my experience, not much work is done on Fridays...so most people work 4 days and are paid for 5.

remotecool··on Ask HN: Spending many hours in the office; how do you deal with the loneliness?
Why are you leaving so late? You need time to decompress and relax at the end of the work day.
remotecool··on [dead]
So nobody thinks it's strange that the son of a prominent politician with no job experience suddenly gets a job as an exec at a foreign gas company?

..and then our VP withholds financial aid until the prosecutor investigating the has company for crimes is fired.

This is the Hillary emails all over again: we blame the person for pointing out the crime rather than the criminal.

remotecool··on Opinion: Standard Time all year round is the healthy choice
This is assuming a lot. What about low income people that don't have smartphones?

I seriously doubt anyone would love time changes like this. If you want to make a schedule 6 months in advance, everything is shifted by a couple of hours.

remotecool··on Opinion: Standard Time all year round is the healthy choice
This time would change slowly on a daily basis and most people wouldn't remember or want to follow such a dynamic time schedule.
remotecool··on Ask HN: What age you started to program?
Basic on the commodore 64 at 10 years old.
remotecool··on Whistleblower who escaped Chinese 're-education camp' reveals horrors
We have another holocaust going on right now and none of the major world powers cares enough to do anything about it.
remotecool··on HBO's 'Watchmen' Misses the Point of Watchmen
I just wish they would keep the politics out of it. It's a thinly veiled attempt to shit on the right and compare it to modern times. It's even mentioned in the first episode.

The irony is that I only see the left regularly going after people with extreme violence in an organized group(like Antifa).

remotecool··on Healthy diet means a healthy planet, study shows
Right. One more thing that the government can control in the name of helping the planet.
remotecool··on Ask HN: Would you pay for beautifully designed Linux software?
Yes. Most people won't buy linux software. This is why saas has become so popular with companies.
remotecool··on Cyclists Break Far Fewer Road Rules Than Motorists, Finds New Video Study
The amount isn't important. The types of road rules broken is what matters.
remotecool··on Any Remote data entry jobs
Check craigslist.
remotecool··on Dissent at Facebook over hands-off stance on political ads
The problem is who decides the truth?

Children in cages Abortion is murder

Both phrases are true or false depending on who you ask and the end result will be no ads for any politician because they all use questionable language that could be considered false.

remotecool··on Counterfeit books “shipped and sold by Amazon”?
I have been selling books for the last decade and started seeing an influx of counterfeit books on Amazon about two years ago.

I've even gotten cease and desist letters from lawyers representing the top publishers because I resold a few by mistake.

The worst part is that there is no clear way to tell if a book is counterfeit, the publishers wont actually tell you specifics, and the only way to know for sure is to send the book to the publisher.

When you send it to the publisher, you will get an answer in about 6 months (yes/no) and the answer is always yes.

You have no way to get your original money back for the counterfeit and nothing is learned about how to more easily detect counterfeits.

I feel like this is intentionally vague so they can go after anyone for counterfeits and there is really no way to know if you have a counterfeit or not without a lengthy court case.

I finally had to get an attorney involved and I just had to pass along Amazon seller information. They went away and I haven't had any issues since then (about 2 years ago).

remotecool··on Ask HN: How many of you have been impacted by a layoff?
I was laid off once when the small company I worked for spent too many resources suing companies violating their patent and ended up running out of money.

It was a blessing in disguise. I started my decade long career of remote work after this and tripled my salary as a result.

I often take year long/project based contracts and need to find new work every year or so. It got me used to selling my self and going through the interview process, and I now am not as devastated when I need to find new work.

remotecool··on California’s PG&E Blackouts Are a Climate Warning
There was an article from 2000 floating around HN a couple of weeks ago that predicted floods and disasters by 2012...which never happened. I remember the same predictions in the 80s and the 90s.

Not everything is due to climate change and articles that try to attribute everything to climate change without any real evidence, only hurts the cause.

remotecool··on WeWork chases new financing as cash crunch looms
This is exactly my position. I have job where I can get most of my daily work done in 2 hours. I spend the rest of my time on my side projects.
remotecool··on How Remote Work Is Quietly Remaking Our Lives
I've been working remotely for 10 years. 10 years ago, it was very difficult to find remote work. Now, it's much easier.

For anyone that wants to start a business while working, it's great.

remotecool··on The GM strike is really about the switch to electric cars
unions stifle innovation and prevent advancements in technology. They keep factories full of multiple workers doing the job of one person.

The taxicab unions wanted to keep a medallion system in place and have pushed Uber and Lyft out of many cities, which will result in higher fares and less efficiency with the routes.

It reminds me of the record industry, trying to prevent things like Napster and the digital music revolution, because they didn't want to switch over from physical media.

remotecool··on Ask HN: What do you like most about your job?
The money.
remotecool··on Google to stop showing news snippets for French users
This is why more countries need to break away from the EU.
remotecool··on The hard truths of climate change – by the numbers
Like I said, we need to have everyone working together. The planet doesn't care about fairness and China, India, and many other countries will continue to pollute unless they suffer some sort of consequence.

You would rather have poverty, death, and destruction now instead of coming up with a solution later? This is what would happen if we wiped out fossil fuels now.

...And countries like China wouldn't follow the same rules and their economy would be just fine.

I don't think I would want to live in your world.

remotecool··on Ask HN: Is it viable tu run a flight business using Skyscanner API as back end?
It depends on how much money customers will pay you as opposed to the amount of money you will pay for skyscanner API access.
remotecool··on The hard truths of climate change – by the numbers
The US is only 15% of total emissions. Even if we had 0 emissions, countries like China and India would still be ruining the planet.

The problem is that many ideas for curbing climate change will destroy the economy and other countries will just use that to their advantage, not caring about it at all, only to seize power.

This is why the Paris Accords need to have punishments involved for countries that pollute the planet with excess CO2 emissions.
