relyio··on Software to capture votes in upcoming German national election is insecure
>- The automated software updates have no signature and are downloaded insecurely over HTTP

I have two conflicting thoughts at the moment:

1. It's insane

2. It's awesome. I wish I could get my hands onto one of those machines.

relyio··on Tech entrepreneurs’ politics: Liberal, with one big exception
FWIW, in France, those who embrace critical theory (https://plato.stanford.edu/entries/critical-theory/) in that fashion are branded radical/far-left (Frederic Lordon, Nuit Debout, Le Monde Diplomatique etc.).
relyio··on Lisk: Blockchain development in JavaScript
>I'm curious: could any of the recently known smart contract bugs have been prevented through the use of a stricter type system?

Short-answer is yes, and there's been lots of work done to go even further than having static typing and have formal verification for smart-contracts.

>I'm genuinely curious: what types of bugs does a stricter type system catch that a reasonable test suite probably would not?

Not sure what you mean by "reasonable" (is it extensive? testing pathological cases? where do you draw the line?). But type checking at compile time makes your code less inclined to showcase a certain class of bugs that are the byproduct of ambiguity in the language semantics and logical mistake in the programmer writing the code.

And with formal verification you can actually make sure that your logic meets the specs. You can hardly extract stronger correctness guarantees than that!

If that interests you, check out Tezos (https://tezos.com/) and github.com/tezos/tezos. The entire codebase is in OCaml.

It was on the frontpage a while back: https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=15061029

>It's only feature is on-chain voting on protocol changes

>It also assumes hard forks are always bad and that everything can be agreed upon with votes

Those two statements are incorrect. If you want to understand what it brings to the table, then you should read the position paper: https://www.tezos.com/static/papers/position_paper.pdf

relyio··on Ask HN: What online communities offer a high level of discussion?
I'm looking for high-quality message boards on libertarianism and political science in general. I know some in my mother tongue (french) but haven't had much luck on the english-speaking web.
relyio··on The Michelson Language
As I understand it, Michelson (The language used to write smart-contracts in Tezos) is better suited for high-value applications where you want to extract strong correctness guarantees out of the code you write.

I think it's a promising development in the field (blockchain meets PLT)

More resources on Michelson I found helpful:

relyio··on Update for customers with Bitcoin stored on Coinbase
As a rule of thumb, if you're not completely technologically illiterate or a trader then you are better off withdrawing your money and storing it offline. Exchanges lose their customers' funds all the time.

You should mention it is the Ecole Polytechnique... de Montreal. Usually, when people say "Ecole Polytechnique" they mean the original one.

It's like saying you went to MIT (Minnesota Institute of Technology).

Other than this small nit, great article.

relyio··on The new, subtle ways the rich signal their wealth
I think calling the article "really stupid" is excessive although I agree it hardly brings anything new to the table. That is fine, but the title had me expecting a little more. As it is I find it a poor re-hash of Pierre Bourdieu's work on cultural capital ("The Inheritors"). I recommend it, it's marvelously well-written in French. Unfortunately, I do not have an English translation to recommend.
relyio··on Stanford students recreate 5,000-year-old Chinese beer recipe
Coincidentally, a few years back, one of my application essay for Stanford undergrad was about "Cooking archeology", and how re-creating dishes from the past could deliver contextual insights for historical and anthropological studies among other things.

relyio··on Emmanuel Macron presidency prompts French startup boom
It's the same everywhere. Do you think the IRS is any better than the FISC? Tax administrations are out to get you, regardless of your country.
relyio··on Emmanuel Macron presidency prompts French startup boom
>A law passed in 2015 in France [0] that makes it mandatory, starting 1/1/2018, for any business (including "auto entrepreneur", what you have to register as to be a freelancer or such in France) to used "certified" software for accounting.

Macron has been elected in 2017. Given this article is about how he is sparking a tech boom in the country, I hardly see how that's his fault, or even related.

The endowment of that venture fund (Viva Technology) will be around 10 billion euros. It has just been announced so the news hasn't come out in English media yet.

Algolia is awesome, but as others pointed out, the market is tough. I wish them all the success they deserve nonetheless.

relyio··on The long, slow, rotten march of progress
It is actually surprisingly difficult. I have been trying to open a Coinbase account for like two weeks. First week I was stuck in a limbo state where my attempts at adding my visa were stuck (because of a bug on their end - took them long enough to fix, must be interesting being VP of Operations at Coinbase). Now, I have finally added it, but it is in a "pending state" and the verification process is taking too long than it is worth.

How do people do it (buying BTC, or ETH)?

relyio··on The growth of the European startup scene

relyio··on Ask HN: How to stop overthinking everything in my life?
Seek professional help. You've identified a symptom, now the best thing you can do is get the right person to help you explore the cause and fix it. Whether that is a personal coach, or a licenced psychiatrist, I leave at your discretion.

Just do it, it's a google search away from you.

relyio··on Ethereum Reading List
Impressive work, I've always been curious about cryptocurrencies and Ethereum has struck me as particularly interesting.

That being said, the hyper-volatility has made me a bit afraid of investing any decent amount of money in it.

relyio··on Why I Quit Being So Accommodating (1922)
I was explaining this point of view to a good old aunt of mine one afternoon and she exclaimed: “But, Joe, it is so selfish for a man to put his work ahead of everything! It’s unchristian.”

“On the contrary, it is Christian in the very finest sense,” I replied. “What was it that Jesus said when his parents rebuked him for his failure to keep his engagement with them on that first journey down from Jerusalem? ‘Wist ye not that I must be about my Father’s business?’ He demanded. He had work to do — great work and little time in which to do it. Even He was no exception to the eternal rule that achievement comes only through the subordination of every power to a great ideal; and that no man is really obliging who does not first discharge in full his obligations to his work.”

relyio··on Building a Reddit-like site after 3-4 months learning Elixir
It sounds like you hired a great engineer to be honest. Elixir, and the OTP environment is well designed. But it shouldn't downplay the achievement of the guy who re-implemented it (or yours, for letting him do so and provide him with the adequate mentorship). Props to you both, it's an impressive feat.
